Incomplete Buildings And Monuments Around The World (PHOTOS)

Rebecca Dolan   Posted: 9/29/11 08:42 AM ET

UPDATE 10/11/11: Things are looking up for our unfinished monuments, as another has received an anticipated completion date. North Korea's Ryugyong Hotel is expected to partially open in April 2012, reports The Telegraph.

Construction on the 105-story hotel, the name of which means Capital of Willows, began in 1987. Had it opened on schedule in 1989, it would have been the world's tallest hotel at the time. But, construction halted around 1992 due to lack of funding, electricity and widespread famine.

According to The Telegraph, the opening will coincide with the 100th anniversary of North Korean founder Kim Il-sung's birth. Celebrations will peak on April 15.

Previously 9/29/11: Last week it was announced that Barcelona's iconic basilica, La Sagrada Familia, was finally given a completion date some 144 years after its groundbreaking. This got us thinking: What other monuments have been left incomplete?

As it turns out, the answer is, "a lot." Unfortunately for their executors, lack of funding seems to be a common thread through many of these structures. So they stand, mostly abandoned, as monuments to financial folly.

Cathedral of Siena, Italy

Construction of the medieval Duomo of Sienna took place between 1215 and 1263. Expansion plans were put into place in the 14th century, but the Black Death ravaged the city, and construction stalled. Walls from the "new Duomo" still stand incomplete, and it's nave floor now serves as a parking lot and museum.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

Disney fans might recognize this Bavarian castle as the model for Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland in California. Begun in 1869, this hilltop castle was meant to be a retreat for King Ludwig II. The king died in 1886 and the palace was never fully completed. It was opened to paying visitors shortly after the king's death, allowing the estate's debts to be fully paid off after a few years.

Ryugyong Hotel, North Korea

An unfinished tribute to North Korea's power, the Ryugyong Hotel stands empty in Pyongyang. Construction began in 1987, and was expected to be completed by 1989. Completion was pushed back, and eventually in 1992 construction halted thanks to lack of funding, electricity and widespread famine. An Egyptian conglomerate took over work on the property in 2008, and expects to be finished in 2012 — aka the 100th anniversary of the birth of former leader, Kim Il Sung.

Located in Gloucestershire, England, this Gothic revival mansion sits empty. Construction began in 1858, but by the 1870s it was abandoned by its builders. Thus, the building looks finished from the outside, but inside is missing floors and entire rooms.

Kellie's Castle, Malaysia

William Kellie Smith, a Scottish businessman in Malaysia, commissioned this house either as a gift for his wife or son. Construction began in 1915 but Spanish Flu caused the death of many workers leading to a great loss of money and the project being abandoned.

Unfinished Obelisk, Egypt

Still sitting in a quarry in Aswan, this unfinished obelisk was abandoned because it developed a crack. It's unknown which pharaoh commissioned the work, but some archaeologists speculate it was meant to complement the Lateran Obelisk at Karnak.

Szkieletor, Poland

This skeleton of a building stands in Krakow, where it was supposed to house the Main Technical Organization. Construction began in 1975 but was stopped in 1981 due to cash flow issues. If the name seems familiar, that's because the building was nicknamed after the villanous character Skeletor from the "He-Man" cartoon.

Unfinished Church, BermudaUnfinished Church, Bermuda

This unfinished edifice in St. George's, Bermuda was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list this year as part of the Historic Town of St. George and Related Fortifications. St. George's is the first permanent settlement in Bermuda, and construction on this church began in the 1870s to replace another damaged church. However, lack of accord among parishioners and funding problems led it to be abandoned.
