Chicago Area Cats And Dogs Up For Adoption (1/13) (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 1/13/12 06:59 PM ET Updated: 1/13/12 06:59 PM ET

This week came with the wonderful news for Chicago animal lovers that Isis, the dog found beaten bloody in the streets after being abandoned by her owner last month, is beginning to trust people again while under the city's care -- and will be up for adoption soon.

But while Chicagoans wait to duke it out over the beautiful shepherd terrier mix, many other area cats and dogs are still sitting in shelters throughout the metropolitan area. This week, HuffPost Chicago has featured a new group of them as part of our continue series of weekly roundups featuring area pets available for adoption.

To our knowledge, all animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up-to-date with their tests and vaccinations.

If this slideshow doesn't satisfy your cute animal-viewing fix, be sure to check out past features linked below the gallery either by scrolling down or clicking here. Many of the previously featured animals remain homeless -- those who've already been adopted are noted with a "Spoken For!" tag.

As always, if you have an adoption shelter success story you would like to share, please send a note (and a picture) to chicago@huffingtonpost.com and we will be sure to feature your pet's tail, er, tale.

Fiorella

Fiorella was given up through no fault of her own after her owners of seven years decided there was no more room for her in their family. She's a very sweet, affectionate and quirky cat. Fiorella loves attention and loves to be scratched on her head. Visit Fiorella at the Red Door Animal Shelter, 2410 W. Lunt Ave., Chicago. Click here or call (773) 764-2242 for more information.

Izzy

Izzy is a male 5-year-old beagle/bulldog mix. He's a laid back kind of guy who can be a little nervous in new situations, but will adjust quickly with some TLC. He doesn't care too much for toys and would probably not be comfortable with smaller kids fawning over him, so kids in his new home should be a bit older. He does get along with some dogs, but they would have to be on the calm side. Visit Izzy at the Naperville Area Humane Society at 1620 W. Diehl Road in Naperville. Click here or call (630) 420-8989 for more information.

Bubba

Bubba is a male 3-to-5-year-old Ridgeback/Lab Mix. He is an agreeable guy who needs to learn some obedience training. he loves training since it involves treats and your attention. He hates being alone in the big kennel but does much better in a quieter place when he has some toys to entertain him. His previous owners did not walk him much, so a leash is a bit confusing to him. Even though he is a little older then most of his shelter friends he is a bit naive about life, but fascinated by all that is out there. Visit Bubba at the Evanston Animal Shelter, 2310 Oakton Street. Click here or call (847) 705-2653 for more information.

Aggie

Aggie is a 2-year-old female beautiful brindle pittie mix who was saved from a kill shelter by Famous Fido Rescue & Adoption Alliance in the 11th hour. This gorgeous girl loves to go for walks and play with toys. Aggie would do best as an only pet as she needs someone who can focus on her training & exercise routine. Visit Aggie at Famous Fido Rescue at 5430 N. Clark Street in Chicago. Click here or call (773) 907-0305 for http://www.famousfidorescue.com/

Ernestina

When Ernestina arrived to Tree House as a fluffy five-month-old kitten, Bill Clinton was president, the Twin Towers were still standing, and N Sync and Backstreet Boys ruled the American Top 40 charts. It was October 25, 2000. In the 11 years since, Ernestina has been adopted and returned twice through absolutely no fault of her own. She's back at Tree House now and spends her time in the front room on the first floor. Visit Ernestina at the Tree House Humane Society, 1212 W. Carmen Ave., Chicago. Click here or call (773) 784-5488 for more information.

Pollyanna

Pollyanna stays optimistic despite having seen some dark days. She was found under the porch of an abandoned building with her flea collar pulled down over one of her fore limbs. She was rushed to the emergency room and treated for lacerations caused by the collar digging into her throat, chest and armpit. Thankfully Pollyanna has healed nicely, requiring no further treatments. She's hopeful for a forever home. Visit Pollyanna at the Tree House Humane Society, 1212 W. Carmen Ave., Chicago. Click here or call (773) 784-5488 for more information.

Lady

Lady is a 3-year-old chocolate with white female pittie/retriever mix who was dumped at Animal Care & Control in Chicago by her former owner. It is apparent that she was used for breeding. She is currently in boarding. Lady is sweet but strong. She seems to like other bigger dogs. Lady enjoys walks and would love to have a fenced in yard to play in. Visit Lady at Famous Fido Rescue at 5430 N. Clark Street in Chicago. Click here or call (773) 907-0305 for more information.

Pete

Pete is a handsome, spunky 2-year-old white male westie/terrier mix saved from "death row" by Famous Fido Rescue. Pete is very friendly and likes to play with other smaller and medium-sized dogs. Pete enjoys the fresh air and going for walks. Visit Pete at Famous Fido Rescue at 5430 N. Clark Street in Chicago. Click here or call (773) 907-0305 for more information.

Whoopie Pie

Whoopie Pie is a male 10-month-old domestic shorthair. He wandered onto the porch of a C.A.R.E. volunteer. Unfortunately during his routine medical testing, he came up positive for Feline Leukemia, so he is looking for an extra special home and an angel who is willing to rescue him and give him a fighting chance. He is a little bit timid, so a nice, quiet home where he can slowly come out of my shell would be ideal. Visit Whoopie Pie at the Evanston Animal Shelter, 2310 Oakton Street. Click here or call (847) 705-2653 for more information.

Olivia

Olivia is a dilute tortoiseshell. She is a bit more reserved than your average cat, but that's a good thing for you. That means she won't be keeping you up all night with my caterwauling, or screaming at you to give her wet food. She'll be extra quiet, promise! Visit Olivia at the Red Door Animal Shelter, 2410 W. Lunt Ave., Chicago. Click here or call (773) 764-2242 for more information.

Taffy

Taffy is a female 3-month-old border collie mix. She's going to grow up to be a very active girl. She would do best in a home that is very active and will take her out on long walks. Still a puppy, she would need a family that will be dedicated to helping her round out her manners. Visit Taffy at the Naperville Area Humane Society at 1620 W. Diehl Road in Naperville. Click here or call (630) 420-8989 for more information.
