President George W. Bush increased the number of American troops in Iraq by more than 20,000, in order to provide security in Baghdad.

Bush announced the change in military strategy in televised speech to Americans:

America will change our strategy to help the Iraqis carry out their campaign to put down sectarian violence and bring security to the people of Baghdad. This will require increasing American force levels. So I've committed more than 20,000 additional American troops to Iraq.

That month death toll of U.S. soldiers in Iraq hit 3,000. The United Nations estimated the Iraqi civilian death toll for the past year at 34,000.

President Obama pledged to withdraw all American troops from Iraq by December, 2011. The first draw out would be 142,000, leaving roughly 50,000 "transitional forces" remaining.

The decision marked a change in Americans' attitude about the war that began six year prior, reported The New York Times.

President Barack Obama officially announced the end to the Iraq combat mission "Operation Iraqi Freedom" in a national address from the Oval Office. The president declared the number one priority was fixing the U.S. Economy.

"We have sent our young men and women to make enormous sacrifices in Iraq and spent vast resources abroad at a time of tight budgets at home," the president said. "Now it is time to put the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs back to work.

I guess Obama has now earned his place on Mount Rushmore, alongside our other Greats!

Don't worry though, Republican Tea Partiers, GW Bush is also getting a monument in South Dakota for his part in the creation two longest wars and costliest wars we have ever fought for no good reason!

Bush's face will be carved in the granite on the other side of Mount Rushmore and a little lower down, in the areas known to all as Mount Assmore.

Karzi wants us out of Iraq, Obama would still have America there if the Iraqis weren't insisting that America leaves.

Wrong.  If he had gotten what he really wanted, we'd still have only about 3,000 troops there, mostly to guard the giant embassy that Bush built.  Now there will only be about 150.  Either way, it's about "out" to me. He's already brought 100,000 troops home in the last year.  Repugs would have just left them there to rot. Most of the Repugs now are upset that they are coming home.  They wanted them to stay there!
