1-Year-Old Girl Shot In The Head In Chicago

First Posted: 8/23/11 05:46 PM ET Updated: 8/23/11 05:46 PM ET

A 1-year-old girl is reportedly having surgery at Children's Memorial Hospital Tuesday after being shot in the head on Chicago's South Side.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the child and her 15-year-old aunt were walking a dog near 84th Street and Muskegon Avenue about 8:10 a.m. when young men nearby opened fire.

From the Tribune:

A man was bicycling in the area near the woman and her child when two male teens between 16 and 19 years of age began shooting at the bicyclist, who managed to get away, police said.

The baby's aunt got on the ground and tried shielding the child, but once the gunfire stopped she discovered the baby “had visible trauma” to her head, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Residents of the South Chicago neighborhood told reporters that gunfire was common in the area, which has a gang problem.

"I don't like living here," one witness told NBC Chicago. "It's too dangerous for people, especially for kids these days, because they might get shot or killed."

Another resident was walking her 5-year-old son to school when the gunfire started this morning, according to the Tribune.

"Now he's saying he doesn't even want to go back to school," she told the paper. "He's scared, he's afraid. He hears shots everyday, but he was never in the crossfire until today, going to school."

It has been a particularly brutal few weeks for children being shot in Chicago. Though Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy reported a decrease in violent crime so far this summer, multiple children have been wounded or killed in the city recently, including the fatal "execution style" shooting of 14-year-old Joseph Prince and wounding of 9-year-old DeShawn McKenzie in separate incidents Sunday. Both shootings occurred as an anti-violence march was underway in Englewood in response to last week's shooting death of 17-year-old Charinez Jefferson, who was six months pregnant. The baby, her second child, was successfully delivered and is in critical but stable condition.

Timothy Jones, 18, has been charged in Jefferson's murder. No arrests have been made in the August 7 murder of 6-year-old Arianna Gibson, who was sleeping on her grandmother's couch when shots were fired into the home, killing the child.

Another pregnant woman was shot in the South Side's Roseland neighborhood Monday evening. She was listed in "stable" condition.

I hope this poor baby survives.

I pray for the baby, I also hope the cops get some cooperation in hunting down the thugs rather than I 'didn't see anything' type of BS.

Now all we have to do is just wait for the polticians to vote in tougher gun laws rather than deal with the gang problems.   Roll Eyes

Well, we do need tougher gun laws and to tackle the gang problem. Unfortunately, the cops pretty much abandon the poor urban areas unless something like this happens.
