Ronald Reagan Statue Unveiled At American Embassy In London By Condoleezza Rice, William Hague

07/ 4/11 09:10 AM ET

LONDON -- Ronald Reagan was hailed as "a great American hero" Monday as his admirers unveiled a 10-foot-tall (3-meter-tall) statue of the former U.S. president near the American embassy in London.

Condoleezza Rice, national security adviser and secretary of state in President George W. Bush's administration, joined British Foreign Secretary William Hague at the morning ceremony in Grosvenor Square.

"Statues bring us to face to face with our heroes long after they are gone," Hague said "Ronald Reagan is without question a great American hero; one of America's finest sons, and a giant of 20th-century history. You may be sure that the people of London will take this statue to their hearts."

Hague also brought a message from former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Reagan's staunch ally, whose frail health has made her public appearances very rare.

"She has asked me to say these words to you: Ronald Reagan was a great president and a great man – a true leader for our times," Hague said.

"He held clear principles and acted upon them with purpose. Through his strength and his conviction he brought millions of people to freedom as the Iron Curtain finally came down."

The London statue was commissioned by the Reagan Memorial Fund Trust. It joins images of former presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower in Grosvenor Square, and will remain there after the U.S. Embassy moves to a new location.

Rice was in Prague on Friday as the Czech capital renamed a street in Reagan's honor, and she was in Budapest on Wednesday for the unveiling of a statue of Reagan.

These are among several events this year marking the 100th anniversary of Reagan's birth on Feb. 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois.

Besides being despised in Hollywood as a snitch for the Communist writers' scandal in the 50s...

The debt under Reagan went from $700 Billion to $3 Trillion (that's back when the wealthiest man in the world was worth only a few billion, folks!), or 400+%!!!

Ronald Reagan raised taxes 11 times, including a payroll tax increase in '83 to pay for Social Security and Medicare.

Reagan traded arms for the Iran Hostages even before he was sworn in.

He closed all federal government mental hospitals (he did give the veterans' new winter coats before kicking them out the door, though)

He was the first President to give tax breaks to companies for moving jobs overseas.

Reagan changed the definition of "employed" to include half-time or less employees, padding his unemployment creds without actually doing anything.

Reagan's staff dealt in arms and narcotics to finance the "Contras" in Iran. "just say no?"

Reagan killed the whole government of Granada as well as the 15-20 policemen who kept order on the Island because Grenada had no special armed forces to fight against the American invasion.

Reagan gave China f-15 and f-16 technology, and in return, got.... nothing.

Reagan also did nothing to hold Menachem Begin to the promises he made to President Carter for peace in the Middle East; instead, he gave even more funds and weapons to Israel.

Reagan refused to mention AIDS publicly for six years, under-funded federal programs for research and in his own authorized biography said, "Maybe the Lord brought down this plague," because "illicit sex is against the Ten Commandments."
