A previous report on the plight of Britain’s only Roman Circus stated that the Colchester Archaeological Trust (CAT) had just written to all who had donated to the fund to ask if they would now support  the purchase of the former education centre building off Circular Road North to provide a new base and to set up a Roman centre.
Gaining support

CAT sent out over 800 letters and emails to people and only four of those who donated to the original fund asked for a refund because they no longer supported the plan -  this has been taken as a resounding yes to the new concept.

The move followed the collapse of a bid to buy the Sergeants’ Mess and its gardens – under which lie the eight starting gates of Britain’s only Roman chariot circus.

A public appeal raised £242,000 towards the campaign to buy the listed building, but the idea was abandoned when the final costs rose above £1 million and one backer suddenly pulled out.

They now need to apply for planning consent for change of use of the Education Centre building and arrange the mortgage which CAT will need to help pay for its share of the building and its repairs.

If all goes well they should be able to move in to the building during the summer and at the same time start work on the garden of the Sergeants’ Mess as the first stage in the work needed to get the circus interpretation centre up and running.

Saving the walls

In addition, Colchester Council is drawing up plans to secure the long-term future for the town’s Roman wall, agreeing to spend £100,000 on urgent repairs after English Heritage pledged a further £79,000 for the project.

With the Government’s funding for English Heritage expected to fall by nearly a third in the years to come, the council is keen to ensure there is enough money to protect the walls for generations.

In 2010 the sum of £550,000 was reported as being required to maintain and repair the wall in the next three years.

Nick Barlow the councillor responsible for culture, said each stretch of wall required repairs every 20 years, but he added: “It’s a unique feature of Colchester and it’s something we want to make more of – it’s an important part of the fabric of the town. “

Colchester’s Roman past is certainly one to watch for 2011.

Why not give a years membership of the Friends of the Colchester Archaeological Trust for £5.00 per person or £6.00 for a family.

All members receive the annual posting of the colour magazine The Colchester Archaeologist, a six monthly newsletter ( which you can have sent by email ) and invitations to the Friends events.
