Dire Straits 'Money For Nothing' Banned in Canada

Dire Straits haven't been in the news for what, 25 years, but they're back in the headlines thanks to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council. The CBSC has ruled that Dire Straits' hit 'Money For Nothing' has been ruled "too offensive to be broadcast on Canadian radio.

The Dire Straits 'Money for Nothing' ban came after a listener to radio station CHOZ-FM in St. John's, Newfoundland complained that the 1985 song includes the word “****.”

The offending Dire Straits 'Money For Nothing' lyrics are "See the little **** with the earring and the makeup, Yeah buddy that’s his own hair. That little **** got his own jet airplane. That little **** he’s a millionaire."

The CBSC ruled that 'Money For Nothing' can be broadcast on radio if it's substantially edited.

The song Money For Nothing was supposed to be about a couple of working class guys watching MTV and complaining about pampered rock stars.

Here are the Dire Straits 'Money for Nothing' lyrics:

I want my MTV

Now look at them yo-yo's that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free
Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Lemme tell ya them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's

(See the little **** with the earring and the makeup
Yeah buddy that’s his own hair
That little **** got his own jet airplane
That little **** he’s a millionaire)

Gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchen deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
Gotta move these colour TV's

I shoulda learned to play the guitar
I shoulda learned to play them drums
Look at that mama, she got it stickin' in the camera
Man we could have some
And he's up there, what's that? Hawaiian noises?
Bangin' on the bongoes like a chimpanzee
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Get your money for nothin' get your chicks for free

We gotta install microwave ovens
Custom kitchens deliveries
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these colour TV's

Look a' here
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on your MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free
Money for nothin' and chicks for free

Money for nothin' and your chicks for free

Look at that, look at that

Money for nothin' and your chicks for free
I want my, I want my, I want my MTV
Money for nothin' and chicks for free

I could not agree with you more, people are becoming too politically correct these days. The song isn't even about gays, it's about rock stars, like you said. See, the problem is, gays tend to have more money and clout then the rest of us, which is why they have been so successful pushing their issues.

But, no matter how much money they have, they are never going to get the majority of the public thinking two guys having sex with each other is anything other than gross. Sorry, people are just not as accepting as the suits seem to be.

Getting back to Dire Straits, what a band!  See, that was back when we still had real rock bands, not over-produced lip synchers in a studio.

Canada should be more concerned about losing whatever liberties it has left.

Really Dire Straits Money for Nuthin' 26 years later.

Talk about a distraction.   Roll Eyes
