Residents in a Arkansas city got a bizarre New Year's surprise on Saturday when they woke up to find their neighborhood covered with thousands of dead birds that appeared to have fallen from the sky.

Dozens of lawns, streets and rooftops for more than a mile in Beebe, Ark., were covered with the corpses of red-winged black birds. An aerial survey showed that no other dead birds were found outside that area.

Beebe residents describe the scene as something out of an Alfred Hitchcock film, and the town's mayor, Mike Robertson, said he and other officials initially thought news of the birds was a New Year's prank.

"I thought the mayor was messing with me when he called me," Milton McCullar, a town street supervisor, told local television station KATV. "He got me up at 4'oclock in the morning and told me we had birds falling out of the sky."

The birds were red-winged black birds. (credit: KATV)

McCullar and a group of other residents spent Saturday and Sunday cleaning up the birds, some of which had been flattened by cars.

State officials aren't sure what killed the giant flock.

Karen Rowe, an ornithologist with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said the thought the birds could have been killed by lightening or a high-altitude hail storm.

The Game and Fish Commission has collected some of the birds and will test them on Monday to try to determine how they died, KATV reported.

The dead birds are an ominous start to 2011 for the town of Beebe, which was one of the cities declared a disaster area last January after severe storms and flooding wreaked havoc in nearly 30 counties in Arkansas.

"Last year we started with floods. This year birds," Robertson said.

Thousands Of Birds, Fish, Mysteriously Die In Arkansas

By Elizabeth C.

SOMETHING'S ROTTEN IN ARKANSAS -- but apparently it's nothing to get alarmed about.

As many as 5,000 blackbirds and 100,000 fish have been found dead or dying within 125 miles of each other in Arkansas, but state officials say the two massive kill-offs are unrelated.

State officials have also reportedly ruled out a toxic dump and low oxygen levels as causes of the fish kill.

The drum fish were found washed along the banks of the up ashore Arkansas River near Ozark on Friday. "The fish kill only affected one species of fish," Keith Stephens of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission told the Associated Press. "If it was from a pollutant, it would have affected all of the fish, not just drum fish."

The fish washed up about 125 west of Beebe, where 5,000 blackbirds fell from the sky just before midnight New Year's Eve. "Test results usually were inconclusive, but the birds showed physical trauma and that the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail," Karen Rowe, a state ornithologist, reported to local media.

Authorities are still investigating both incidents and are advising locals not to eat any of the dead fish found along the water banks.

DEAD BIRDS...AND DEAD FISH? HAARP?? JAN 2011

Dead birds,{ + now fish} found almost exactly a year apart?
{CNN 3/1/11)-
"Arkansas officials are investigating the death of an estimated 100,000 fish in the state's northwest, but suspect disease was to blame, a state spokesman said Sunday.
Dead drum fish floated in the water and lined the banks of a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River near Ozark, about 125 miles northwest of Little Rock, said Keith Stephens of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. A tugboat operator discovered the fish kill Thursday night, and fisheries officials collected some of the dying animals to conduct tests.
Stephens said fish kills occur every year, but the size of the latest one is unusual, and suggested some sort of disease was to blame.
"The fish kill only affected one species of fish," he said. "If it was from a pollutant, it would have affected all of the fish, not just drum fish."
Ozark is about 125 miles west of the town of Beebe, where game wardens are trying to find out why up to 5,000 blackbirds fell from the sky just before midnight New Year's Eve.
Dead birds a mystery in Arkansas
Biologists believe the bird deaths were stress-related from either fireworks or weather and are unrelated to the fish kill near Ozark, Stephens said.
CNN's Tina Burnside contributed to this report"

Is the Arkansas/Louisiana mass bird kill an omen predicted by Nostradamus?

Nostradamus, Century 8, Quatrain verse 10:

A great stench will come from Lausanne, but they will not know its origin, they will put out all people from distant places, fire seen in the sky, a foreign nation defeated.

In French:

Puanteur grande sortira de Lausanne, Qu’on ne s?aura l’origine du fait. Lon mettra hors tout la gent loingtaine Feu veu au ciel, peuple estranger deffait.

There were mysterious mass fish and bird kills in both Arkansas and Louisiana.  Officials explain this away as the result of fireworks or some loud noise during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.  I’m not so sure.  Another large bird kill reported, this time in Louisiana

It is curious this happened at the same time we had a partial solar eclipse visible over Europe.  And we had wo 7+ magnitude earthquakes that began the New Year in Latin America.  There was a 7.0 quake in Chile on January 1 and a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Argentina on January 2.  The solar eclipse was on January 4.  In-between we had a mass kill of both birds and fish in America.  Fish, birds in mass-death mysteries

This could all be only coincidence.  Or an omen!  Synchronicity works in mysterious ways, and one never knows if an omen is truly an omen until after the fact.  Therefore I checked out Nostradamus for any clue.  Above is a curious quatrain.  Could this be related to future events, and Nostradamus is referring to omens that at this time look inconsequential?  Could Nostradamus be referring to the mass bird/fish kill?
louisiana-purchase

Louisiana Purchase

The first two lines of the quatrain are:

A great stench will come from Lausanne, but they will not know its origin,

Lausanne is a city in Switzerland.  But Nostradamus is known to be a trickster using anagrams and riddles in his predictions.  What if with “Lausanne” he was instead actually referring to Louisiana or in French “Louisiane”?   Could Lausanne be a phonetic anagram for Louisiane?

In the mid 1600’s the French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier named the territory of Louisiana (La Louisianne) in honor of King Louis XIV of France.  The territory of Louisiana was purchased by the United States in 1803 from Napoleon Bonaparte, as Louisiana Purchase.  In French it was called “Vente de la Louisiane”.  This area now includes the states of Arkansas and Louisiana.  What if the first line actually meant:

“A great stench will come from Louisiana, but they will not know its origin.”

This could be referring to the rotting animals, both bird and fish, that mysteriously appeared in the region of the original Louisiana territory without any explanation.
January 4 Solar Eclipse Path

January 4 Solar Eclipse Path

IF so, the next two lines are:

they will put out all people from distant places, fire seen in the sky, a foreign nation defeated.

I don’t know yet what “they will put out all people from distant places” means.  As for “fire seen in the sky” that could mean all the people trying to see the solar eclipse.  Usually we can’t look into the sun, but people try during a solar eclipse.  Curiously the path of the partial eclipse went directly over France, the homeland of Nostradamus AND Lausanne, Switzerland, the city supposedly named in the first line.

Partial solar eclipse visible over Mideast, Europe
“Western Europe woke up to a sunrise eclipse. Astronomers expected the greatest eclipse over Sweden, where about 85 percent of the sun will be blocked.”

As for “a foreign nation defeated”, only time will tell what that means.

We have some strange synchronicities going on at the beginning of 2011.

Religious people think this is a sign of the end of the world.  Is it?

Here are more pictures of the dead birds:

A dead bird lies on the ground in Beebe, Arkansas, on Sunday after being thrown off the roof of a home by a worker with United States Environmental Services LLC.

More than 3,000 red-winged blackbirds mysteriously tumbled dead from the Arkansas sky on New Year's Eve, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission told the Associated Press. (Visit National Geographic's backyard birding central.)

A preliminary report—released Monday by the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission—suggests the birds died of trauma of unknown cause.

"The birds obviously hit something very hard and had hemorrhages," game-and-fish commission bird expert Karen Rowe told CNN.

It's unknown whether the trauma occurred during contact with something in the sky—such as lightning or high-altitude hail—or when the birds hit the ground, Rowe said.

Commission scientists began to examine the carcasses today, and final results on the exact cause of the birds' death could be back within a week.

Fish Kill

Photograph courtesy Arkansas Game and Fish Commission

Drum fish lie dead on the shores of the Arkansas River on New Year's Eve.

In addition to the dead birds, Arkansas officials are investigating what caused the deaths of between 80,000 and 100,000 fish, found Thursday by a tugboat operator near the city of Ozark, commission spokesperson Keith Stephens told msnbc.com. The cause of death will take a month to determine.

The giant fish kill occurred about 125 miles (201 kilometers) away from where the blackbirds fell from the Arkansas sky. For now officials say the two events are not connected.

A worker with United States Environmental Services LLC tosses a dead blackbird off a home in Beebe, Arkansas, on January 2.

More than a thousand birds fell dead within an area about a mile (1.6 kilometers) long and 0.5 mile (0.8 kilometer) wide on New Year's Eve, commission spokesperson Keith Stephens told the Associated Press.

Such a giant bird kill has happened at least twice before in Arkansas, the AP reported: In 2001 lightning killed ducks in Hot Springs, and in 1973 hail knocked birds from the sky at Stuttgart.

Hundreds of dead snapper washed up on New Zealand beach

Rob Kidd

January 5, 2011 - 9:22AM

Horror haul ... dead fish floating and washed up on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Horror haul ... dead fish floating and washed up on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Hundreds of dead snapper have washed up on Coromandel beaches on the North Island of New Zealand, leaving holidaymakers perplexed.

The mysterious incident came as the southern United States was hit with a second unexplained mass bird death within a week.

People at Little Bay and Waikawau Bay, on the north-east of the peninsula, were stunned when children came out of the sea with armfuls of the fish and within minutes the shore was littered with them.
Advertisement: Story continues below

Charlotte Pearsall, whose family have lived at Little Bay for the last 30 years, said she had never seen anything like it.

"It was so surreal," she said. "It's such an incredible waste - it could've fed the whole northern tip of the Coromandel."

People with binoculars said the snapper stretched as far as they could see and boaties reported "a carpet of floating fish further out to sea all along the coast".

"We initially thought 'woohoo a free feed' but they had really cloudy eyes and you could see the birds had been at them. Some of them had no eyes," Pearsall said.

Her parents called the Department of Conservation and were told it was most likely the fish had starved due to weather conditions, but Pearsall did not think that was the case as many of the fish looked big and healthy.

The Fisheries Ministry are currently investigating the situation and said they could not yet say what the cause was.

"Any commercial operators must record and report their catch," said ministry field operations officer for Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel Brendon Mikkelsen.

"They're equally as concerned as we are . . . it's not in anybody's interests for fish to be abandoned at sea."

Mikkelsen said it had happened before but given the quantity of fish it was very concerning.

People saw floating snapper in the water as early as 5am yesterday but the ministry only received reports 12 hours later.
