Britain, like the U.S. was probably just into the war in Iraq for the oil contracts (and, of course, to prop up the military industrial complex.)

Canada actually doesn't need the oil cause they have the second largest oil reserves in the world after Saudi Arabia!  In fact, we here in the U.S. get most of our oil from Canada.
