                                                 I N T R O D U C T I O N

Tarot cards conjure images of gypsy women, crystal balls and hocus pocus. It's hard to separate the cards from their long history. However, the Tarot cards themselves are rather benign; their only power is the belief we place in them. And they fill a spectrum of needs, from an amusing hobby to a powerful tool for exploring the inner workings of our lives. There are no hard and fast rules for the care and reading of your cards, but these are some suggestions to get you started on your way.

1  Step One.  Get a deck of tarot cards. The Rider-Waite tarot deck is a good choice to start with. Shop online or at bookstores, which often carry tarot decks.

2  Step Two.  Use a scarf or cloth and wrap your cards to create a safe and clean environment. You may also want to buy a special box in which to store your wrapped deck.

3  Step Three.  Season your deck of cards by sleeping with the wrapped cards next to your heart or under your pillow for a week. Now you're ready to read!

4  Step Four.  Concentrate on the question being asked, and shuffle the deck. You can mix the cards in a big pile using both hands, and then gather them up neatly and proceed with a regular card shuffle.

5  Step Five.  Cut the deck. If reading for someone else, have him or her ask the question out loud as he or she cuts the deck. If you do the reading for yourself, ask your own question as you cut.

6  Step Six.  Deal the cards using the Tarot spread of your choice. A simple card spread is four cards in a diamond shape.

7  Step Seven.  Look first at the design on the cards. Cards that look right side up for the reader are in a positive position; cards that look upside down for the reader are reversed. Reversed cards indicate conflict or blocked energy or weaken the card's influence.

8  Step Eight.  Begin to learn the card meanings. Start with the Related Site, "Individual Tarot Cards," or a good book.

9  Step Nine.  Come up with your own card meanings and descriptions to personalize your reading style. Don't be afraid to follow your instincts.

You may want to burn candles with your readings. You can choose a color or fragrance that is reflective of the questions you're asking or the mood you're seeking. Try blue candles for healing, patience, peace and happiness. Purple candles work in much the same way but also help for visualization and dreaming. Or burn green for prosperity and growth or black to absorb negativity.

It's uncertain just when tarot cards came into being, but they are the forefathers of our domesticated, four-suited deck of 52. The 78-card tarot deck is broken up into the Minor Arcana and the Major Arcana. The 22 Major Arcana Cards present the strongest messages and images and have the most to tell us. The Minor Arcana cards more resemble the deck we use today, with four suits; most often the deck depicts these suits as wands, cups, pentacles and swords.

Today, tarot card collecting and reading has become a popular hobby, there are hundreds of decks, with themes as diverse as goddesses and baseball.

You should be the only one to handle your deck unless you want the person for whom you're reading to shuffle or cut the deck.

Don't feel you must be a slave to a book. Let the cards speak to you.

Cards 1,2, and 3 are the past. Cards 4,5, and 6 are the present, and Cards 7,8, and 9 are the future. This is just an expansion of the first spread.

THE CELTIC CROSS

The ten card Celtic Cross is the most common Tarot card layout I've ever come across. With this popularity there comes the problem of many variances of placement. Below is the one I use with my comments about the interaction of the placements.

In my opinion the Celtic Cross works best when used to answer specific questions. Remember to put some thought into the formulation of the question you wish to ask.

Here is the spread:

Card 1:   The present

Card 2:   The immediate challenge facing the querent. You will often pull a difficult card here, which will indicate an obstacle that must be overcome. When you pull a "good" card here, examine it carefully because it will still represent a challenge.

Card 3:   Distant past, foundation. This card should indicate the root of the subject matter of the question

Card 4:   More recent past, including events. This will indicate events taking place, not necessarily directly connected to the question. For example, if a love affair going wrong Card 3 would show the root of why it is going wrong, whereas Card 4 will show something that recently happened to reflect this. You could see this as a "check comment" card - a way of seeing that the reading is sound.

Card 5:   The best that can be achieved. This is directly related to the question. Note that this may not necessarily gel against Card 10 - it depends whether you are able to get the best. However, a negative card here probably means that it is worth cutting your losses rather than putting any more effort into the situation.

Card 6: Immediate Future. This indicates events in the next few days or week(s). This reading does not cover months.

Card 7: Factors or inner feelings affecting the situation. Compare this against Card 1 in order to understand underlying forces/trends. If there is conflict between them this tends to indicate that the querent is going in the wrong direction.

Card 8: External influences. People, energies or events which will affect the outcome of the question and are beyond the querent's control.

Card 9: Hopes or fears around the situation. This may produce a card that confuses us badly. Always bear in mind that hopes and fears are closely intertwined, therefore that which we hope for may also be that which we fear, and so may fail to happen. Sometimes it is useful to draw a second card for clarification after the reading has been laid, and to read the two together.

Card 10: Final outcome. This is a fairly self explanatory card. However it is worth saying that if the card comes up somewhat ambiguous, once again it may be worth drawing three extra cards to clarify. These should be interpreted through the lens of Card 10. So if the card drawn is the Tower and we draw the Ace of Cups, Princess of Cups and Four of Cups in a reading about a relationship, the Tower would indicate that it is time to move on. The Ace of Cup suggests that a new relationship is promised with better things ahead. The Princess of Cups brings new love (and possibly pregnancy). The Four of Cups shows deep levels of contentment and happiness, and many options for progress.

FIVE CARD SPREAD

A Tarot spread for determining a course of action

Card 1:   The present or general theme of the reading

Card 2:   Past influences still having effect

Card 3:   The future

Card 4:   The reason behind the question (this will probably shed light on 2)

Card 5:   The potential within the situation.

This is a very useful spread when trying to decide a given course of action. Card 4 will often reveal a subconscious impulse - perhaps a blockage which is stopping you from achieving your desired result. Card 5 shows the possible results from taking a given course of action. The spread works best if, whilst selecting the cards, you concentrate on one aspect of the decision, rather than either/or type questions.

THE ELLIPSE SPREAD

You could try this seven card spread as a variation that answers direct questions well

Card 1:   Past influences now having bearing on the situation
Card 2:   Now - the influences surrounding you at the minute
Card 3:   Future influence having bearing
Card 4:   What to do
Card 5:   External influences having bearing
Card 6:   Hopes and fears
Card 7:  Final outcome of this situation.

I find Card 4 particularly useful, especially if you read it against the 'Working with' section. It allows you to get a handle on the things you need to be doing to help yourself in this situation now.

THE MIRROR SPREAD

This spread works primarily on existing relationships, but can assess anything from a budding love affair to an established partnership.

It will often reveal inconsistencies between viewpoints - for example if the cards at 2 and 3 contradict one another, there is a need to re-assess and re-adjust points of view, or take into account the input of the other person.

Obstacles will sometimes produce very positive cards - look carefully under the surface if you find this, rather than assuming everything is fine!

The probable result card is drawn with circumstances as they currently are - but if changes recommended by the reading are effected, then this final card can change.

Here is the spread:

 Card 1:   The querent.

Card 2:   The way you see the other person in the relationship.

Card 3:   The way they see themselves.

Card 4:   What the person represents to you.

Card 5:   What you represent to them.

Card 6:   Obstacles within the relationship.

Card 7:   Strengths within the relationship.

Card 8:   Probable result.

THE MANDALA SPREAD

In its purest form the Mandala spread assesses one's spiritual path. It can be adapted to address specific issues, and questions, or an open reading with no overall question can be posed.

This spread reveals the strengths, weaknesses and desires which lead one toward a growth in spirituality, indicating pitfalls and positive points in a way that it is possible for the querent to put together a much more clear view of their own progress.

Card 1 must be read against cards 2, 4, and 6 to give an overview of the way things actually ARE, then against cards 3, 8 and 9 to assess potential.   After that reading Card 1 against cards 5 and 7 to reveal possible problems and areas which require further work.

Put it all together and you have quite a good overview of your querent's position and opportunities.

Here is the spread:

Card 1:   An overview of the self.

Card 2:   Ambitions, goals.

Card 3:   Ideals, dreams.

Card 4:   Real achievements at this time.

Card 5:   Dependencies, faulty beliefs.

Card 6:   Strengths and positive traits.

Card 7:   Faults and weaknesses.

Card 8:   Self perception.

Card 9:   Desires.

Evangeline Adams was born during the Victorian era. She came from the Boston area, in her own words, "the most conservative circle of that conservative city". Some of her forebears had been Congregationalist ministers, and this conservative religious group was the successor to the Massachusetts Colony's Puritans. Although Adams would from young adulthood espouse untraditional views and unorthodox beliefs, her upbringing was what would in those days have been termed "quite proper." Extremely independent and liberal-thinking, Adams nonetheless had as part of her nature a strict sense of social morality. Her telling and sometimes humorous account of an early consultation with a prostitute gives us insight into her background. "That first interview in Boston prostrated me. I wasn't myself for weeks. And I have the same reaction even now on a less violent scale." Here we have a woman with a certain moral code. And we can expect that she will always try to conduct herself in a manner consistent with good taste and proper decorum. Strong social forces forced Evangeline to keep her private life private.

Adams' impressionistic style is what makes her writing so enjoyable. But as we have seen, it also make it quite difficult to verify particulars; intuition must fill in the gaps. Her writing technique, which I feel was quite natural, contributed to what I view as the "myths" which surround Adams. Many stories are so richly symbolic and almost parable-like that they lend themselves quite easily to embellishment upon repetition.

Take, for instance, Adams' arrest for fortune-telling in New York in 1914. Many publications have repeated the fiction that Evangeline made astrology legal in New York. Anyone who took a look at Section 889 of the NY Criminal Code would see that it still remained illegal for anyone to "tell fortunes." So where does this misleading statement originate?

                                                 M A J O R   A R C A N A

The first part of a traditional Tarot deck contains 22 Major Arcana cards. The Major cards illustrate a path through existence to its pinnacle. Most term this as the Fool's Journey (a great rendition of the Fool's Journey by Joan Bunning). The Occult Scholar sought a greater understanding of our universe. The Major cards center the deck, each representing some part of the universal human existence and experience.

The Major cards go beyond the narrow archetypes represented by the Minor cards, encompassing a broader range of occurances generally associated with the human experience. Some think these cards cover too general an area, but a broad overview of a situation is often more useful than sketchy details. While the Major cards give the "bigger picture," they work in unison with the Minor cards, which provide the details.

The Major cards are usually marked with a Roman Numeral to show the path from beginning to actualization. A typical Tarot deck in traditional format (meaning 22 Major Arcana, and 4 suits of 14 Minor Arcana) runs in the following order, often with one or two names changed, but rarely the order:

The Fool 0

The Magician I

The High Priestess II

The Empress III

The Emperor IV

The High Priest V

The Lovers VI

The Chariot VII

Justice VIII

The Hermit IX

Wheel of Fortune X

Strength XI

The Hanged Man XII

Death XIII

Temperance XIV

The Devil XV

The Tower XVI

The Star XVII

The Moon XVIII

The Sun XIX

Rejuvenation XX

The World/Universe XXI

Some of the cards represent approaches to life, implying by choice, such as the Hermit and the Magician. Others are symbolic of objects that play a part in our everyday life, The Sun, The Moon, and The Star. Still more depict the major influential energy that one must go through to learn and reach self-actualization; The Tower, Death (which does not always mean physical death, but rather a transformation). Many too give a hint to their meaning in the name itself; Strength, Justice, Rejuvination.

                                                  M I N O R   A R C A N A

The Tarot would not be useful if no method of narrowing the interpretations to the practical, everyday level existed. This function is accomplished through the Minor Arcana, 56 cards broken down into four suits, much akin to modern playing cards.

Suits:

Swords: Affiliated with reason, logic, and other mental functions. Strong connections with morals and contemplation of ideals and truth. The swords embody the intellectual element of Air, as quick and powerful as thought.

Cups: Spiritual and emotional, often corresponding to feelings and relationships. Both positive and negative emotional reactions, illustrates the fluidity and instability of Water.

Wands: Creation, action, movement, and transformation abound in this suit. Often attributed to enthusiastic, adventurous people, the suit of Wands embody the passionate energy of Fire.

Pentacles: Sometimes name Coins, this suit encompasses the material aspects and archetypes, often related to money, sexuatity, and practicality. This suit mirrors the element of Earth, the solid elements of our reality.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each suit is comprised of 14 cards, presenting an image that embodies an archetype within the related sphere of the suit; illustrating alternate approaches to a similar problem.

Aces: The Ace illustrates the essence of the suit. Aces always represent the most positive aspects of the sphere the suit operates in.

Middle Numbers: The middle cards depict separate aspects of the suit's sphere; different ways of reacting to a similar occurance.

Tens: Tens present the logical conclusion to the suit, as initiated by the Ace.

Court Cards: These represent people of different personalities and rank, who resemble certain aspects of the suit's sphere. Interpretation is taken from how one would think these archetype cards would react to the presented situation.

Grin  But always be sure to say a prayer to keep malevolent spirits from manipulating the card.  They can maneuver the cards to mislead you.  Wink

For this reason, I'm personally weary of those cards, LOL.  I prefer things that can't be altered, like the stars or your palm.    Cool

Well, Sungate, if you go into this with the  idea that they can be manipulated by "malevolent

spirits", they then might well be. LOL.....

Smiley  This protective prayer is not just my personal opinion.  I've been warned by others who read Tarot.

You can have a ritual before you do Tarot Readings because it helps to
prepare you for the Readings, whether it be burning incense, playing soft
music in the background, having candles on your table, or fresh flowers,
you could place a bible on the table as well, you can do whatever you like,
but you must say a 'Prayer of Protection' before you start!

Most imporatnt of all! These are your cards...DO NOT LET ANYONE ELSE TOUCH THEM!!! Secondly, please you a prayer of protection for your deck. These are not toys! As with any use of a paranormal tool...you want to have a protection to ward off any evil spirits! It takes losts of patients,

Tarot Card Blessing
This is a blessing to say when you are shuffling tarot cards, to make the reading work out better, and to see the meanings of the cards more clearly:
"Silver moonlight, and Sunlight of Gold,
Light my way clearly as the cards unfold,
Show me the subconscious,
And secrets untold,
Show me what the past, the present and future doth hold,
Let me see clearly the cards meanings,
Be they bright and warm, dark or cold,
God and Goddess be with me, and bless me
As the cards unfold.
So Mote it be!"

Quote
To Remove Negative Entities
"Nasty critters, heed these words-
Fly far away, fly like a bird.
Hear me well; I now command,
You leave this space, this sacred land.
Out, I say! I order you!,
Go peacefully-take flight anew"

If others are reading this and want to experiment with Tarot cards, they should be made aware that there can be dangers, as there always are in the rhelm of the metaphysical.
Wink  Love and peace, Mike... and happy card shuffling!  May that grim reeper card only have good connotations.
