                                                        C H E I R O M A N C Y

Chiromancy or Cheiromancy, (Greek cheir, “hand”; manteia, “divination”), is the art of characterization and foretelling the future through the study of the palm, also known as Palmistry, Cheirology or Hand Analysis. The practice is found all over the world, with numerous cultural variations.

Palmistry can trace its roots back to Indian (Hindu) Astrology (known in Sanskrit as Jyotish). The   Hindu sage Valmiki (presumed author of the Ramayana) is thought to have written a book, whose title translates in English as "The Teachings of Valmiki Maharshi on Male Palmistry", comprising 567 stanzas, more than 5,000 years ago.

From India, the art of palmistry spread to China, Tibet, Egypt, Persia and to other countries in Europe. Palmistry came to China in around 3,000 B.C. It then progressed to Greece where Anaxagoras practised it. However, modern palmists often combine traditional predictive techniques with psychology, holistic healing, and alternative methods of divination.

Techniques

Palm of man's right hand (dominant hand)Cheiromancy consists of the practice of evaluating a person's character or future life by "reading" the palm of that person's hand. Various "lines" ("heart line", "life line", etc.) and "mounts" (or bumps) (chirognomy) , purportedly suggest interpretations by their relative sizes, qualities, and intersections. In some traditions, readers also examine characteristics of the fingers, fingernails, fingerprints and palmar skin patterns (dermatoglyphics), skin texture and color, shape of the palm, and flexibility of the hand.

A reader usually begins by reading the person's 'dominant hand' (the hand he or she writes with or uses the most). In some traditions of palmistry, the other hand is believed to carry past-life or karmic information, as well as hereditary traits.

The basic framework for "Classical" Palmistry (the most widely taught and practiced tradition) is rooted in Greek mythology. Each area of the palm and fingers is related to a god or goddess, and the features of that area indicate the nature of the corresponding aspect of the subject. For example, the ring finger is associated with the Greek god Apollo; characteristics of the ring finger are tied to the subject's dealings with art, music, aesthetics, fame, and harmony.

Hand Shape

Depending on the type of Palmistry practiced, and the type of reading being performed, palmists may analyze various qualities of the hand, including the shapes and flexibility of the hand, palm, and fingers; the color and texture of the skin and fingernails; the relative sizes of the palm and fingers; the prominence of the knuckles; and numerous other attributes of the hands.

In most Schools of Palmistry, hand shapes are divided into four or five major types, sometimes corresponding to the Classical elements or temperaments. Hand shape is believed to indicate character traits corresponding to the type indicated (i.e., a "Fire hand" would exhibit high energy, creativity, short temper, ambition, etc. - all qualities believed to be related to the Classical element of Fire).

Although variations abound, the most common classifications used by modern palmists:

Earth hands are generally identified by broad, square palms and fingers, thick or coarse skin, and ruddy color. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually equal to the length of the fingers.

Air hands exhibit square or rectangular palms with long fingers and sometimes protruding knuckles, low-set thumbs, and dry skin. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually less than the length of the fingers.

Water hands are recognizable by the long, sometimes oval-shaped palm, with long, flexible, conical fingers. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually less than the width across the widest part of the palm, and usually equal to the length of the fingers.
Fire hands are characterized by a square or rectangular palm, flushed or pink skin, and shorter fingers. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually greater than the length of the fingers.

It’s easy to determine the dominant element and temperament in your own hand (Dominant Planets In Hand And Horoscope) The number and quality of lines can also be included in the hand shape analysis; in some traditions of palmistry, Earth and Water hands tend to have fewer, deeper lines, while Air and Fire hands are more likely to show more lines with less clear definition.

THE LINES

Some of the lines of the hand in Palmistry:

1: Life line - 2: Head line - 3: Heart line - 4: Girdle of Venus - 5: Sun line - 6: Mercury line - 7: Fate lineThe three lines found on almost all hands, and generally given most weight by palmists:

The Heart line is the first of the major lines examined by a reader. It is found towards the top of the palm, under the fingers. In some traditions, the line is read as starting from the edge of the palm under the little finger and flowing across the palm towards the thumb; in others, it is seen as starting under the fingers and flowing toward the outside edge of the palm. Palmists interpret this line to represent matters of the heart, both physical and metaphorical, and believe it can indicate emotional stability, romantic perspectives, depression, and stoicism, in addition to various aspects of cardiac health.

The next line identified by palmists is the Head line. This line starts at the edge of the palm under the index finger and flows across the palm towards the outside edge. Often, the head line is joined with the life line (see below) at inception. Palmists generally interpret this line to represent the person's mind and the way it works, including learning style, communication style, intellectualism, and thirst for knowledge. It is also believed to indicate a preference for creative or analytical approaches to information (i.e., right brain or left brain).

Finally, readers look at perhaps the most controversial line on the hand, the Life line. This line extends from the edge of the palm above the thumb and travels in an arc towards the wrist. This line is believed to represent the person's vitality and vigor, physical health and general well being. The Life line is also believed to reflect major life changes, including cataclysmic events, physical injuries, and relocations.

Contrary to popular belief, modern palmists generally do not believe that the length of a person's Life line is tied to the length of a person's life.

Additional major lines or variations include:

A Simian crease, or fusing of the heart and head lines, has special significance in that both emotional as well as reasoning nature have to be studied from this line alone. The peculiar line is thought to be a combination of the head and heart lines on such hands that are separately marked on the rest of the hands.

The Head Line

According to Cheiro, this line is thought to endow a person with an intensity of purpose or single-mindedness, the nature of which is decided upon by exact position of this line on the hand and the direction of any branches shooting from it, which is normally the case. In hands where such a line exists without any branches as a singular mark, it indicates an extremely intense nature and special care is needed for such persons. The normal position for the line is starting below the index finger and ending where normally the Heart line terminates at the edge of the hand below the little finger, indicating average interests for the person and the intense side of the nature is decided purely by the direction of any branches shooting from it.

The upper half of the palm lying immediately below the fingers is considered to represent the higher or intellectual nature and the lower half of the palm to represent the materialistic side of the nature. If one of these halves is larger than the other as decided by the central placement of the head line or in this case the single transverse palmar crease it shows greater development of that aspect of the
nature.

Based on this general principle, if this line is placed below its abovementioned normal position it indicates an intensely intellectual nature; if it is placed above its normal position it indicates an intensely materialistic nature and interests.

The direction in which any branches may be found shooting from this line have a significant impact on the nature of this line resulting in suitable modifications from the above defined results depending on the nature of the mounts on the hand. For instance, if a branch from this line shoots to the mount of Moon lying on the lower edge of the hand exactly opposite the thumb, it indicates an intensely vacillating nature and emotional temperament.

The Fate line runs from the bottom of the palm near the wrist, up through the center of the palm towards the middle finger. This line is believed to be tied to the person's life path, including school and career choices, successes and obstacles. Sometimes this line is thought to reflect circumstances beyond the individual's control, or alternately the person's choices and their consequences.

Other minor lines:

Sun Line - parallel to the Fate Line, under the ring finger; believed to indicate fame or scandal.

Girdle of Venus - starts between the little and ring fingers, runs in a rough arc under the ring and middle fingers to end between the middle and pointer fingers; thought to relate to emotional intelligence and the ability to manipulate.

Union Lines - short horizontal lines found on the percussive edge of the palm between the Heart Line and the bottom of the little finger; believed to indicate close relationships, sometimes - but not always - romantic.

Mercury Line - runs from the bottom of the palm near the wrist, up through the palm towards the little finger; purported to be an indicator of persistent health issues, business acumen, or skill in communication.

Travel Lines - these are horizontal lines found on the percussive edge of the palm between the wrist and the heart line; each line is said to represent a trip taken by the subject - the longer the line, the more important the trip is to the subject.

Other Markings - these include stars, crosses, triangles, squares, tridents, and rings under each of the fingers; their supposed impact and meaning varies by location on the palm and freedom from other interfering lines.

THE MOUNTS - CHEIROGNOMY

Cheirognomy is the study of mounts in Cheiromancy, the study of the palm of the hand. Each Mount correlates to a planetary influence in the Astrological sense. The thumb, Rhea, is above the mount of Venus. The index finger, ruled by Jupiter, is above the Mount of Jupiter. The middle finger, ruled by Saturn, is above the Mount of Saturn. The ring finger, ruled by Apollo/the Sun God, is above the Mount of Apollo. The pinky finger, ruled by Mercury, is above the Mount of Mercury. Upper Mars Mount is located beneath the Mount of Jupiter, the plain of Mars is located in the center of the palm (beneath the Mount of Saturn), and lower Mars Mount is located beneath the Mounts of Apollo and Mercury. Earth Mount is located on the fleshy mount created on the back side of the hand when the thumb and index finger are pushed against each other. The Mount of Luna is located on the lower part of the palm directly below the lower plain of Mars.

                                                           C H E I R O

The most famous hand reader in history. The most influential and popular seer of the 20th century.

The following biography of Cheiro has been constructed from various resources as no single authentic source about him is available.

Cheiro was one of the most famous and colorful occult figures of the early Twentieth Century .He was a clairvoyant who used palmistry, astrology, and Chaldean numerology, to make startlingly accurate predictions, including world events. Born in Ireland as William John Warner, Cheiro also went by the name Count Louis Hamon, claiming a noble ancestry that may or may not have been accurate. His name, Cheiro, derives from the word cheiromancy which means the Art/Science of Palmistry (hand reading).

He was born in Ireland, Dublin on November 1, 1866 . Some sources points out that he was born in Bray, just south of Dublin. After an illustrious career of a highly popular and respected occult personality, Cheiro died on October 8, 1936, in Hollywood, CA, at the age of 69.

He retired from public life after forty years of continuous occult research work. He died shortly afterwards; but, through his books, he is stilI regarded as the foremost exponent of the science of palmistry. But although most famous for his knowledge of palmistry - that is, "Cheirognomy" and "Cheiromancy" - he did not confine himself to anyone branch of occult study - numerology and astrology were equally taken into account in his remarkable predictions.

By turn lecturer, public speaker, war correspondent and editor of newspapers in London and Paris, Cheiro travelled all over the world: early in his career he chose to live in the East so that he might study what he described as the forgotten wisdom of the Hindus and the mystics of other races. When he set. up his salon in London the world's famous were among his numerous clients.

He was commanded to read the hands of many of the crowned heads of Europe, of presidents of republics and of leaders of commerce. Many subsequently testified that Cheiro's powers of prediction from a study of the lines of their hands were akin to miraculous.

Cheiro predicted the date of Queen Victoria's death, the year and month when King Edward VII would pass away, the grim destiny that awaited the late Czar of Russia, the assassination of King Humbert of Italy, the attempt on the Shah's life in Paris, and for many others he foretold with equal accuracy the outstanding events of their careers.

Cheiro made several extended trips to the United States where many notable personages consulted him, including Mark Twain and Dame Nellie Melba, the great Australian prima donna.

He always kept a visitor's book wherein his clients could write his observations about their visit. Melba, for instance, wrote in his book: "Cheiro you are wonderful - what more can I say?" Mark Twain, who did not "believe" in palmistry, was so impressed by Cheiro's accuracy and insight, that he made use of the science of palmistry in "Pudd'n Head Wilson", a story that enjoyed great success. He wrote in Cheiro's visitor's book: "Cheiro has exposed my character to me with humiliating accuracy. I ought not to confess this accuracy, still I am moved to do so. - Mark Twain".

The Infanta Eulalia of Spain, Sir Arthur Sullivan, the great actress Sarah Bernhardt, Sir Austen Chamberlain - these were just a few of the notable personage who consulted Cheiro. To attest to the importance he attached to Cheiro's predictions, Chamberlain had his hand read in a private room in the House of Commons.

In his quest for occult knowledge Cheiro travelled extensively in far east and particularly in India. He met many learned men and found the rare chance reading some of the most secret text on occult science. Here in his own word the description of a rare book on palmistry which he was allowed read in India.

" History again comes to our assistance, and tells that in the north-west province of India, palmistry was practiced and followed by the Joshi caste from time immemorial to the present day.

It may be interesting to describe here, in as few words as possible, an extremely ancient and curious book on the markings of hands, which I was allowed to use and examine during my sojourn in India. This book was one of the greatest treasures of the few Brahmans who possessed and understood it, and was jealously guarded in one of those old cave temples that belong to the ruins of ancient Hindustan.

This strange book was made of human skin, pieced and put together in the most ingenious manner. It was of enormous size, and contained hundreds of well-drawn illustrations, with records of how, when, and where this or that mark was proved correct. One of the strangest features in connection with it was that it was written in some red liquid which age had failed to spoil or fade. The effect of those vivid red letters on the pages of dull yellow skin was most remarkable. By some compound, probably made of herbs, each page was glazed, as it were, by varnish; but whatever this compound may have been, it. seemed to defy time, as the outer covers alone showed the signs of wear and decay. As regards the antiquity of this book there could be no question. It was apparently written in three sections or divisions: the first part belonged to the earliest language of the country, and dated so far back that very few of the Brahmans even could read or decipher it. There are many such treasures in Hindustan; but all are so jealously guarded by the Brahmans that neither money, art, nor power will ever release such pledges of the past."

Cheiro spent his final years in Hollywood, seeing as many as 20 clients a day and doing some screenwriting before his death in 1936.

Amazingly, editions of many of Cherio's books are still in print today in both English and foreign language editions and are available through major chains like Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com. They include his astrology book, When Were You Born?; Palmistry, The Language of the Hand (first self-published in 1897); Cheiro's Book of Numbers; Cheiro's Book of World Predictions; and Cheiro's Palmistry for All. The editions of his astrology book, 'You and Your Stars' are also available (though very few in print)

The best way to know about Cheiro is to read his books.

Success isn't written in the stars, it's in the length of your fingers

Take a look at your hands – you will learn a lot about yourself, Cambridge University scientists say

It is the simplest hands-on experiment – and, for once, it is safe to try this at home. Compare the length of your fingers and predict your own future.

Everything from sporting prowess to academic ability, sexual orientation to susceptibility to disease can be assessed on the twin measurements of the length of the ring and index fingers. It is science's answer to palmistry.

Researchers at Cambridge University have found that finger length can point to success in the City. Traders with longer ring fingers made the most money – up to six times more than those whose ring fingers were relatively short.

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found finger size accounted for 20 per cent of the difference. Though the finding provoked scepticism – one blogger tartly responded, "Scientists with little else to do than measure fingers should pull their own out" – the Cambridge boffins are not alone. The significance of finger length has been investigated by research groups worldwide – with surprising results.

The ratio between index and ring finger is believed to be linked to exposure to the male hormone testosterone in the womb. On average, men tend to have longer ring fingers and women longer index fingers. The higher the testosterone, the greater the length of the ring finger and the more "masculine" the resulting child – whether male or female. The longest ring finger is known as the "Casanova pattern".

Professor John Manning, author of The Finger Book, said the ratio was a "living fossil" of the early period of pregnancy – a measure of past exposure to testosterone, and future potential.

Index finger longer than ring finger

The traditional pattern in women, long index fingers can predict a child's academic strengths. Scientists at the University of Bath found that longer index fingers indicated good verbal and literacy skills, where girls dominate. The findings were published in the British Journal of Psychology in 2007. Studies of sexual orientation have shown that lesbian women are more likely to have longer ring fingers, suggesting exposure to higher levels of foetal testosterone. Professor John Manning said research he had conducted suggested that gay men were more likely to display feminised finger ratios, suggesting less testosterone exposure in the womb.

However, sceptics have observed that twin studies show that 70 per cent of the difference in finger length is inherited from our parents.

Ring finger longer than index finger

More often found in men than women, people with longer ring fingers tend to excel on the sports field, especially in running and football.

Scientists at the University of Bath found that children who had longer ring fingers are better with numbers-based subjects such as maths and physics, which are traditionally male favourites. A study this week showed autism may be linked with exposure to testosterone in the womb. Autism is sometimes described as the "extreme male brain" and is four times more common in boys than girls. Finger length might provide an early warning of the condition. Canadian researchers from the University of Alberta have found a correlation between length of the ring finger and levels of physical aggression – as would be expected in the most masculinised individuals.
