Dowsing, sometimes called divining or water witching, refers to practices said to enable one to detect hidden water, metals, gemstones or other objects, usually obstructed by land or sometimes located on a map. Most commonly, detection is made through the movement or vibrations of an apparatus, such as a Y-shaped twig, an L-shaped rod, or a pendulum. Some practitioners claim to need no apparatus at all.
While scientific evidence hasn't been found confirming dowsing's efficacy, some researchers believe there is evidence to support it, and many people continue to believe that it works.

History of dowsing

Dowsing has existed in various forms for thousands of years.[3] The original may have been for divination purposes — to divine the will of the gods, to foretell the future and divine guilt in trials. Dowsing as practiced today probably originated in Germany during the 15th century, when it was used to find metals. The technique spread to England with German miners who came to England to work in the coal mines. During the Middle Ages dowsing was associated with the Devil. In 1659 dowsing was declared Satanic by the Jesuit Gaspar Schott.[citation needed] In 1701 the Inquisition stopped using the dowsing rod in trials. In the late 1960s during the Vietnam War, U.S. Marines may have used dowsing to locate weapons and tunnels.[4] An extensive book on the history of dowsing was published by Christopher Bird in 1979 under the title of The Divining Hand.

Possible explanations

Skeptics of dowsing and many of dowsing's supporters believe that dowsing apparatus have no special powers, but merely amplify small imperceptible movements of the hands arising from the expectations of the dowser. This psychological phenomenon is termed the ideomotor effect. Some supporters agree with this explanation, but maintain that the dowser has a subliminal sensitivity to the environment, perhaps via electroception, magnetoception, or telluric currents. These explanations give rise to the classification of dowsing as pseudoscience. Other dowsers cannot explain the source of their powers apart from the paranormal, such as paranormal auras, or as a matter of faith.

Dowsing equipment

Many dowsers use simple brass rods bent in an "L" shape known as divining rods; others use wooden Y-rods and/or even bent wire coat hangers. According to some dowsers who use divining rods, brass allows the rod to attune to magnetic fields emanated by the target without the earth's EM field interfering, as would be the case with a metal such as steel.  The end of the rod to be held by the dowser is often encased in a material that provides a constant electrical impedance, to prevent the dowser's own conductivity from interfering with the dowsing process.

Pendulums for divination and dowsing

Pendulums (these may be a crystal suspended on a chain, or a metal weight) can be used in divination and dowsing. In one approach the user first determines which direction (left-right, up-down) will indicate "yes" and which "no," before proceeding to ask the pendulum specific questions. In another form of divination, the pendulum is used with a pad or cloth that has "yes" and "no" written on it, and perhaps other words, written in a circle in the latter case. The person holding the pendulum aims to hold it as steadily as possible over the center. An interviewer may pose questions to the person holding the pendulum, and it swings by minute unconscious bodily movement in the direction of the answer. In the practice of radiesthesia a pendulum is used for medical diagnosis.

Dowsing claims

On the cover of his eBook, The Miracle of Dowsing, Robert A. Swanson claims to have used dowsing in 2003 to locate Saddam Hussein.  Published reports of Hussein's capture, however, do not mention Swanson's role.

Notable individuals claiming dowsing ability

The following are among those who claim to be skilled in dowsing:

Karl Spiesberger
Ludwig Straniak
Wilhelm Wulff
A. Frank Glahn
Baron Dr. Carl (Karl) Ludwig von                                                                                                     Professor Hellmut Wolff

Thomas Charles Lethbridge; claimed there is a link between the length of the pendulum and the object being looked for.

Evidence

Dowsing for water has been scientifically investigated in two studies, the Munich study in the late 1980s and the Kassel study in 2004, both referring to the locations in Germany in which these experiments were performed. Both studies failed to conclusively prove that dowsing is more than guesswork. Yet, the authors of the Munich study contended that a few of the 500 dowsers tested:

in particular tasks, showed an extraordinarily high rate of success, which can scarcely if at all be explained as due to chance ... a real core of dowser-phenomena can be regarded as empirically proven ...
Researcher and skeptic Jim T. Enright reviewed the data from the Munich tests and disputed these claims, while in the Kassel study the dowsers fared no better than chance.

 Munich

The scientific study of dowsing in Munich, Germany was performed in 1987 to 1988 and involved more than 500 dowsers in more than 10,000 double-blind tests.

Five hundred dowsers were initially tested for their "skill", and the experimenters selected the best 43 among them. These 43 were then tested in the following way. On the ground floor of a two-story barn, water was pumped through a pipe; before each test, this pipe was moved in a direction perpendicular to the water flow. On the upper floor, each dowser was asked to determine the position of the pipe. Over two years, the 43 dowsers performed 843 such tests. Of the 43 pre-selected and extensively tested candidates, at least 37 of them showed no dowsing ability. The results from the remaining 6 were said to be better than chance, resulting in the experimenters' conclusion that "a real core of dowser-phenomena can be regarded as empirically proven."

 Enright responds

Five years after the Munich study was published, scientist and skeptic Jim T. Enright contended that these results are merely consistent with statistical fluctuations and do not demonstrate any real ability. He noted that the best tester was on average 4 millimeters out of 10 meters closer to a mid-line guess, an advantage of 0.0004% advantage. The study's authors responded[12] but Enright remains unconvinced.

 Kassel

More recently, a study was undertaken in Kassel, Germany, under the direction of the Gesellschaft zur wissenschaftlichen Untersuchung von Parawissenschaften (GWUP) [Society for the Scientific Investigation of the Parasciences]. The three-day test of some 30 dowsers involved plastic pipes through which a large flow of water could be controlled and directed. The pipes were buried 50 centimeters under a level field. On the surface, the position of each pipe was marked with a colored stripe, so all the dowsers had to do was tell whether there was water running through the pipe. All the dowsers signed a statement agreeing this was a fair test of their abilities and that they expected a 100 percent success rate. However, the results were no better than what would have been expected by chance.

Geophysical explanations

Some researchers have investigated possible physical or geophysical explanations for dowsing abilities.

 Harvalik

The study, "Anatomical localization of human detection of weak electromagnetic radiation: experiments with dowsers," concludes that dowsers respond to a 60 Hz electromagnetic field, but this is blocked if the kidney area or head are shielded.

 Williamson

In a letter published in the journal "Nature", Williamson writes, "David Marks, in The Skeptical Inquirer, asserts that there are no theories to account for paranormal effects. This is not true for dowsing. Serious dowsing claims, such as those made by Soviet geologists, which are difficult to account for in terms of the reception of normal sensory cues, may be explained by postulating human sensitivity to small magnetic field gradient changes. The theory is supported by a series of tests involving 150 subjects. The magnetic theory predicts that dowsers can achieve above-chance results only if the features they claim to detect are associated with magnetic gradients of at least one nanotesla per metre. This was not the case in Randi's recent experiments, so his chance results are therefore consistent with the magnetic theory, which merits further investigation."

I am a huge fan of Jack Temple and his books....he passed a few years ago.

MY WAY OF EXPLAINING DOWSING

By Jack Temple

June 1999

Events occur in our lives which propel us onto new pathways we had no idea ever existed. It was when I picked up a pendulum at the first Mind and Body Exhibition at Olympia that my life changed. I had no comprehension of dowsing or what one can achieve with this simple bit of knowledge. In fact the knowledge of dowsing is so simple that most people reject it out of hand. I can only claim the distinction of possessing a brain able to use the gift of dowsing to pinpoint problems in the human body.

I’m going to stop here and ask you. all of you, to step out of your shoes. I want you to pretend that you are all farmers and you have a herd of 200 cows all needing copious amounts of water. There hasn’t been a drop of rain for 4 weeks. The land is parched and your cows are thirsty. Your metered supply is failing. Too many urban people are watering their gardens. You are now stressed and sick with a problem with no obvious solution. When discussing the matter with a friend he suggests approaching a well-known firm specialising in the sinking of bore holes.

After a number of seismatic tests you now have in front of you a mass of graphs with suggested areas that could produce water. The cost of sinking a few trial boreholes is daunting but even then the proposal is only to analyse the

water for its purity. Once all the other information is fed into the computer further discussions will enable the engineers to finalise the next moves.

In the meantime another friend told you about Mr Edwyn Taylor, an eminent farmer working 3,000 acres in Northumberland, who’s been a dowser since he was 20, he is now 81 and he has never ever failed to find water by dowsing. You look at your friend incredulously.

“You mean to say you can find water without seismatic tests, without a

laboratory, without a computer, simply by dowsing?”

“Oh yes, Edwyn is a reputed dowser and that is what he specialises in.”

“What’s his telephone number?”

Remember, you are all still out of your shoes and are all still farmers who are all worried about your cows and the lack of water for them to drink. Now the first question Edwyn will ask you is how many cows are there and what other water needs will arise in the future. He will then use a hazel stick or a special rod developed by water dowsers for this particular purpose. By dowsing he will locate the area where the borehole would have to be drilled and then the depth of the source of water, by dowsing again, of course. He will measure the flow per minute, by dowsing of course, the purity of the water, by dowsing of course, the output from the bore hole, by dowsing of course and that is the plan he would present to you.

Then you are faced with a choice. Do you go to the firm who has all the modern aids or do you rely on Edwyn and his dowsing skills and the recommendation that comes with him? You decide to go to Edwyn, so the borehole goes down, up comes the water with exactly the supply he forecast with exactly the purity he farecast. And this is all done by dowsing.

All of you are now confused particularly when you are faced with the following questions. How can a man with a rod say to you that the water you so badly need is available at, say, a depth of 100 feet and that it is flowing at a certain rate?

Edwyn has been a water dowser all his life. I know him well and we met only recently at the British Dowsers Convention held at Ripon in Yorkshire. In fact, Edwyn asked me to look at one of his knees as it was paining him and he was having to rely on a stick when walking. Next morning he greeted me with delight, his knee was not completely better but it was much, much better. You see, I wouldn’t know where to start if anybody asked me to dowse for water but, the human body, that is different.

What is this thing that is so amazing that people reel away from it in incredulous disbelief? It is (hat the human right brain hemisphere with its gigantic mass of brain cells enveloped with neurons can actually send out radar waves to any living object, analyse it and send back an answer via a “yes or no” response of a pendulum.

By the way I am really disapointed that this thread is in "Occult".

Rocky,

I agree with you, this should not be in "Occult", as I am a firm believer of dowsing.  I am

a loooong time practitioner.  I think Occult is a word that no longer applies, as the 'powers-

that-be" can't scare people with that word anymore.  Most people realize that..........

What think you about ARCANE AND RECONDITE PRACTICES?  We could petition the Admini-

strators to change it to that or something similar.
