The World's Most Severe Snowstorms As Seen From Space (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post   |  Amanda Ng and Bianca Bosker First Posted: 03- 4-10 08:19 AM   |   Updated: 03- 4-10 08:38 AM

NASA's Earth Observatory uses powerful satellites to capture the movements, evolution, and beauty of the earth, from snowstorms and earthquakes, as seen from space.

Using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite, the Earth Observatory has captured the drama, fury, and magnitude world's most severe snowstorms in stunning detail.

See amazing images of snowstorms, as seen from space, in the pictures below, then check out more breathtaking pictures of the 'earth as art', captured by the Landsat 7 satellite.

From the Earth Observatory: "Cyclone Rene was weakening from a Category 3 storm with winds of 185 kilometers per hour (100 knots or 115 miles per hour) to a Category 2 storm with winds of 176 km/hr (95 knots or 109 mph) on February 14, 2010."

"The second blizzard in less than a week pounded the U.S. East Coast on February 9–10, 2010. Federal government offices in Washington, D.C., remained closed for four consecutive days as locals skied past the city’s monuments," the Earth Observatory observes.

From the Earth Observatory: "A series of strong storms pounded California in January 2010. Fierce winds and heavy rains downed power lines and flooded streets as the National Weather Service warned residents to brace for as much as 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rain in five days. A likely tornado flipped a car, smashed windows, and ripped a roof in Orange County on January 19. "

"Snow blanketed Great Britain on January 7, 2010," explains the Earth Observatory. "The cities of Manchester, Birmingham, and London form ghostly gray shapes against the white land surface. Immediately east of London, clouds swirl over the island, casting blue-gray shadows toward the north."

In China, "Up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) of snow fell on the capital city of Beijing and nearby port city of Tianjin, closing schools, clogging roads, and canceling flights. Although not as bad as the 2008 freeze that ruined travel plans for millions of Chinese trying to visit family for the lunar new year, this snowstorm was described as the heaviest snow to fall on Beijing in almost 60 years."

In Korea, the Earth Observatory explains, "The same wintry weather that caused the heaviest snowfall in Beijing in nearly six decades also caused the heaviest snowfall in Soul (Seoul) since meteorological surveys began there in 1937. A blizzard dropped more than 25 centimeters (9.8 inches) of snow on that city on January 3, 2010."

From the Earth Observatory: "Snow surrounded the Aral Sea in early January 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on January 8, 2010. A band of snow extends from southwest to northeast, crossing over the Aral Sea."
