These images reveal the recovery efforts and disaster relief from a broader perspective than just an aerial view. They show the burning buildings from the water and as far away as the Statue of Liberty. (Det. Greg Semendinger/NYC Police Aviation Unit)

In August 2009, ABC News saw that the NIST was asking various photographers for permission to release images it collected during its investigation, completed in 2005, into the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. Among the photographers who submitted images to NIST were average citizens and professional, freelance and other photographers. (Det. Greg Semendinger/NYC Police Aviation Unit)

Seeing the request in the Federal Register, ABC News filed a Freedom of Information Act request Aug. 14, 2009, to obtain the volumes of pictures and video that NIST had collected. After months of review and collection by NIST, ABC News was provided with 2,779 pictures on nine CDs, 12 of which are featured here. (Det. Greg Semendinger/NYC Police Aviation Unit)

Featured in this slideshow are selections from the thousands of images provided to ABC News. While many of the visuals depict images from that day that the public generally has seen before, some are from slightly different vantage points or angles. (Det. Greg Semendinger/NYC Police Aviation Unit)

In this powerful image, boats rush to the scene where nearly 3,000 people lost their lives. The wake left in the water by the boats conveys the urgency with which rescue teams were deployed to Ground Zero. (Det. Greg Semendinger/NYC Police Aviation Unit)
