Mexican archaeologists recently discovered a tomb dating back to the time of the demise of the Mayan civilization. Scientists are hoping that clues found within the tomb may help explain the mysterious disappearance of one of Mexico's most advanced ancient civilizations.

Archaeologist Juan Yadeun told reporters that the discovery could at least reveal insights into what group took over as the Mayan Classic period came to an end. Experts have long believed that internal warfare among the Maya or drastic environmental changes played a role in their demise, but the discovery of Toltec ceramics in the tomb leads Yadeun to believe that other factors may be involved.

The Toltecs were a powerful civilization that blossomed in Mexico's highland region, but eventually expanded south to the Mayan stronghold in southern Mexico, specifically the Yucatan peninsula.
