Haunted house sought by scientists: The Ghostbusters of 1869

One might think the era of ghost hunting started with the phenomenal success and cultural impact of the Ghostbusters film and the increasing affordability and accessibility of such ghost hunting tools as digital video cameras and EMF (electromagnetic field) detectors. The Internet, too, has provided an outlet for amateur ghost hunters to share their results and connect with other like-minded spook stalkers and television has certainly discovered the value of an old dark house.

But interest in the paranormal also flourished in the 19th century as evidenced by this small item from an 1869 edition of the St. Louis Missouri Democrat.

A party of Englishmen, anxious to find a haunted house, have inserted the following advertisement in the London Times: “To Proprietors of Haunted Houses, - A few gentlemen wish to have the opportunity of visiting houses said to be haunted, situate in or near London, for the purpose of scientific observation.”

I have not as of yet found any information as to what results, if any, these gentlemen had but I would certainly love to know what kind of equipment they used. Steam-powered Proton Packs, perhaps?
