Experts claim to have solved the mystery death of daredevil entrepreneur Steve Fossett.

The maverick aviator is one of thousands of pilots to have crashed, seemingly without reason, in the Sierra Nevada.

According to a Sunday newspaper, a documentary team claims to have uncovered the secrets behind the area, dubbed the 'Nevada Triangle'.

Observers have proposed a series of wild theories as to why more than 2,000 planes have crashed in the past 60 years, including UFOs and alien abduction.

But the truth is rather more down-to-earth.

A team from Channel Four found that the Triangle's unique micro-climate creates fast-moving winds that rip planes out the air.

The combination of Pacific winds and high mountains creates a phenomenon known as a 'Mountain Wave' - a rollercoaster effect that sends aircraft soaring up and down.

Billionaire Fossett, who had taken off without a parachute for what his wife described as a ‘Sunday drive’, would mostly likely to have been ploughed into the ground by the wind.

The Sunday Times reports that Fossett's single engine Bellanca Super Decathlon never stood a chance.

Its maximum speed of 300mph would never have been enough the 400mph downdraft caused by the Mountain Wave.

Fossett, the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon, crashed near Mammoth Lakes, California, after taking off from the Nevada ranch of hotel magnate Barron Hilton on September 3, 2007.

An extensive, high-profile search failed to reveal any clues to his fate until a year later, on October 7, 2008, a hiker found some of Fossett’s belongings.

These included his pilot certificate and an identification card.

An aerial search located the wreckage about a half-mile away at an elevation of about 10,000ft.

Bones were later found and DNA tests showed they belonged to the entrepreneur who made his fortune in the financial services market in Chicago.
Recordbreaker

Record breaker: Fossett was the first person to fly solo around the world in a balloon

But because small planes do not carry the cockpit voice or data recorders required in airliners, it is almost impossible to work out exactly what happened on the day he died.

Until now.
