[During a major flood]

MYSTERIOUS LIGHT APPEARS ON RIVER

A mysterious light, bobbing, winking, disappearing, flashing again and finally losing itself, was seen coming down the river just after dusk last night. What it was, no one living knows. The small light was first seen far up the river. Everyone on the river bank was attracted to it. Swiftly it came towards the city and people wondered. At times it would disappear, then shine dimly again. For ten minutes it came on, apparently in the middle of the vast sweep of water. It was dark enough that nothing else could be seen. When but a few hundred yards above the Brown Street Bridge, the little flame went out and did not appear again. Anxious watchers strained their eyes, but there was no further sign of it. A light in a home carried away? Someone battling bravely against the elements in a small boat? A hundred explanations were hazarded, but no one knows what it was. A tragedy may have been enacted in the rushing water.
