Sorry, again, no pictures, though this one would be interesting to see:

Phallus Throne Unearthed at Perperikon Rock Sanctuary in Bulgaria

19 July 2007, Thursday

Bulgarian archaeologists have added a throne with an upright phallus on it to their exciting collection of finds from the rock sanctuary of Perperikon, near Kardzhali in southern Bulgaria.

Top archaeologist Nikolay Ovcharov, who unearthed the four-legged throne on the eve of his fiftieth birthday, explained that the phallus symbolizes the prelude to a holy marriage. The find is dated to the fourteenth century.

Perperikon, a trove of buried treasures, also yielded a golden coin, which is believed to have belonged to a Byzantine emperor. It has never been used and archaeologists say it has been stored in a basin.

It was just last week that Ovcharov showed the press two unique ceramic figurines of a cobra and dragon heads unearthed at the rock sanctuary of Perperikon, near Kardzhali in southern Bulgaria.

The city of Perperikon has been inhabited since around 5000 BC, while a nearby shrine dedicated to Orpheus, near the village of Tatul, dates back to 6000 BC and is older than the Pyramids of Giza.

Darn, Cassandra, wouldn't you just know that they'd leave us in suspense......

Better keep an eye out for any future pictures, though.

Funny it is called a "throne", well maybe like we call the toilet a "throne".....

It certainly was used ritually, and possibly for every girl's coming of age.  "The Seat of Dionysus", perhaps?

I read a book years ago which described such an implement in a grove on a small islet in a river in Greece....  Before WWII the locals would revel there every year....

The maypole was a ritual phallus and the wreath of flowers placed at the top was the "yoni" which would descend inch by inch down the pole as the dancing and ribbon lacing commenced, finally to rest at the bottom, completeing the ritual.... and the couples would pair off.

I wish there were pictures, Bianca! I still haven't found any, I've read the article three times, and I still can't imagine what it must have looked like.

Rockessence, I like your anaology that it was used for a girl's coming of age.  Of course, that's all just speculation till we get to see a darn picture!  Hopefully one of you will have better luck finding one.

It may have been a Queen's throne of course, or that of a High Priestess who would use the seat as part of a "connecting to the god" ritual....

Whatever it actually is, it sounds sexual in nature.  Nice to know that the ancients weren't as repressive as the people in the Bush Administration.   Smiley
