Developing Story?

The dome-shaped balloon is 20 feet long and 5 feet high, Larimer County Sheriff's Office says.

(CNN) -- Officials are trying to rescue a 6-year-old boy who climbed into a balloon-like experimental aircraft built by his parents and floated into the sky over eastern Colorado.

Margie Martinez of the Weld County Sheriff's Office said a sibling saw the boy climb into the basket before the balloon took off. Since the door on the balloon was unlocked, Martinez said it's possible the boy had fallen out.

The balloon appeared to be a saucer-shaped, Mylar-coated helium balloon, not unlike a party balloon. The craft was drifting eastward, authorities said.

The helium balloon was tethered to the boy's family home in Fort Collins, the Larimer County Sheriff's Department said. The boy got into the craft Thursday morning and undid the rope anchoring it.

"The structure at the bottom of the balloon that the boy is in is made of extremely thin plywood and won't withstand any kind of a crash at all," said Erik Nilsson, Larimer County emergency manager, according to CNN affiliate KMGH.

The Federal Aviation Administration is trying to track the aircraft on radar and has notified the Denver International Airport. Shortly after noon (2 p.m. ET), the balloon was sighted two miles south of Evans.

CNN meteorologist Chad Myers estimated the wind would keep the vessel moving at 30 mph. Authorities say the craft is about 7,000 feet above the ground.

Kathy Davis, spokeswoman for the sheriff's department, said a dispatcher received a call Thursday morning, and emergency services personnel were contacted.

Davis said a balloon company has been contacted and several media outlets offered to help track the balloon with their helicopters.

"We're trying to determine the best course of action," Davis said. "This is a first and we'll do what we need to do."

Falcon Heene was reportedly the boy stuck in a hot air balloon. (UPDATE: IT LANDED, NO ONE IS INSIDE) The six-year old is the son of Richard and Mayumi Heene of Ft. Collins, Colo. Richard is a storm chaser and scientist. The parents were on "Wife Swap" and returned for the 100th episode, so information on the family is online. They apparently sleep in their clothes so they can leap from bed and run after a storm.

Falcon has two older brothers, Bradford and Ryo.

According to tv.com, the family was known for their risk taking. An LA Times articles says "The Heene family, with its three rowdy boys, is anchored by father Richard, whose anger arrives in sudden bolts between his fringe science projects."

The ABC site says the family is "science-obsessed" and wrote the below for their 2nd appearance:

When the Heene family aren't chasing storms, they devote their time to scientific experiments that include looking for extraterrestrials and building a research-gathering flying saucer to send into the eye of the storm. In this ultimate swap, the Heenes swap lives with a psychic mom who speaks to the dead and can control the weather, her husband and her children -- who believe they are destined to be stars. This show will feature aliens, punk rockers, past-life regression and, for the first time ever, the children from the two families will face off in a kids' table meeting. "Heene/Silver," the 100th episode of Wife Swap, destined to become a classic!

Below is the family description for their first appearance:

Wife Mayumi (43) and storm scientist Richard (45) take their three kids, Bradford (Cool, Ryo (7) and Falcon (5), out of school to go on storm chasing missions to prove Richard's theories about magnetic fields and gravity. If conditions are right, Mayumi wakes her family by shouting "Storm Approaching, Storm Approaching!" into a bullhorn. The family sleep in their clothes so they can leap out of bed and into the storm-mobile. Richard calls Mayumi his 'ninja wife'; she maintains equipment, drives the storm-mobile, films tornadoes and waits with the kids while Richard jumps on his motorbike, heads into the eye of the storm and launches rockets to measure magnetic forces. At home the family are as chaotic as a twister: the kids have no table manners and throw themselves around the house, and while Richard devotes every moment to his research, he expects Mayumi to cook, clean and run the house without any help.

I certainly hope that the little boy didn't get scared and jump out of the ship while it was rising.  He must have had something to do with it, else it wouldn't have risen.

Criminal Charges In Balloon Boy Case

Officials confirm charges are soon be filed in the case of the 6-year-old boy only to be found safe at home, after setting in motion a frantic search when it was feared he was inside a wayward helium balloon.

Charges are being prepared by the Larimer County Sherrif’s department over the much publicized incident, even though amateur scientist and inventor, Richard Heene, who is the boy’s father denies speculation the incident was a publicity stunt.

Heene’s homemade helium balloon breaking free, drifted for hours thousands of feet above Colorado, as a massive search-and-rescue operation and media frenzy ensued.

Speaking to reporters at a CNN televised news conference, Sheriff Jim Alderden said criminal charges would be filed in respect to this incident, with his department preparing search warrants, though the initial charges was likely to be one for misdemeanor, though given the circumstances the misdemeanor charge hardly seem serious. He also informed the reporters of his department being in contact with federal authorities, which could mean a possibility of additional federal charges.

The Sheriff’s officials questioned both Heene and his wife Mayumi on Saturday, as after the boy, Falcon appearing on CNN’s ‘Larry King Live’ said he had stayed ‘hidden for the show’, fuelling speculation whether the entire ordeal was an elaborate hoax staged by the family, who had participated in a reality show on television and were known to be storm chasers.

However, Heene reiterated Saturday it was not a publicity stunt and invited the media to his home saying he had a major announcement, only to request reporters to put their written question in a box, to be addressed later. Asked if this was a publicity stunt of some sort, Heene said: ‘Absolutely no hoax.’

Falcon’s older brother reported seeing the boy climb into a compartment attached to the balloon, however, he was discovered hiding in a box in the attic above the family’s garage.

News Story Ballooned out of control

Has the news opened a new can of worms to step into a new kind of reality to get ratings? Real life situations seems to fill the gap in-between major serious news stories. A cat stuck in the tree could hit the major news networks on a slow day in the news, if a boy whisked away in balloon hoax can get the attention of the major media networks; but do we blame the schemer to this concocted publicity stunt that this hehe heene character put together, some may believe its the medias fault for jumping too to many conclusions and not fact checking the whole story from beginning to end before airing it.

But overall this publicity stunt paid off for this mr. heene fame hunter, win or lose for him here on in he has achieved his goal also even if the this heene lawyer loses he wins, he gets recognition to his law firm. In my opinion in this light of this recent american drama the major news networks has became one big amateur reality show itself, called "News Swap" for unreal news.

News on the fly,

Keith,
