Significant medieval discoveries in Angus

Excavation uncovers artefacts beside Brechin cathedral.

07 September 2009 14:39 PM

Significant medieval remnants have been found during an archeological dig in Angus.

The excavation has been taking place at a gap site beside Brechin Cathedral.

It was the location of a 15th century palace occupied by Bishop Carnock.

A number of local volunteers, some without any previous archeological experience, have been involved in the project.

In the past week medieval pottery and two 14th century coins have been found.

The dig has been undertaken with assistance from Brechin Cathedral and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Brechin Townscape Heritage Initiative.

It has been overseen by Aberdeenshire based Murray Archeological Services.
