Israel is also cautioned to be ready to accept a nuclear-armed Iran—suggesting Obama will not be able to stop Iran. The Obama administration apparently expects Israel to be able to live with the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran. It also seems not to understand that Iran (which, along with Syria, funds and arms the terrorist groups Hamas and Hizbullah) would be a serious threat to nations other than Israel if it makes nuclear weapons available to terrorists. Iran, a Shiite fundamentalist theocracy, may seek a major confrontation to prompt the return of its “Islamic Messiah.” Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a November 2006 speech that his mission is to “…pave the path for the glorious reappearance of Imam Mahdi; may Allah hasten his reappearance.” Obama may believe he can reason with Ahmadinejad; if he is wrong, his mistake could cost the lives of hundreds of thousands—if not millions. On May 14, the CIA denies a request from former Vice-President Dick Cheney to release memos showing that terrorist interrogations provided useful information that prevented additional attacks. The CIA stated it could not release the documents only because they pertained to pending litigation. [2815]

On May 14, Obama visits Rio Rancho, New Mexico for a town hall meeting to talk about credit card reform. He is greeted by demonstrators along the motorcade carrying signs protesting his policies. Some of the signs include, “Democrats and Republicans Against Socialism” and “Go trash your father’s crappy country. Don’t trash my father’s Great Country,” “God Bless Americas! Damn Obama!” [2817]

At the town hall meeting in New Mexico, Obama calls current deficit spending “unsustainable”—despite the fact that it is his administration and political party that is doing the spending. “We can’t keep on just borrowing from China,” states Obama, as though he just figured out that spending money he doesn’t have is a ad idea. “We have to pay interest on that debt, and that means we are mortgaging our children’s future with more and more debt.” He continues, “Most of what is driving us into debt is health care, so we have to drive down costs.” (To “drive down that debt” he is proposing a national health care system that will cost between one and two trillion dollars over the next 10 years.) [2818]

It is reported that Obama’s “stimulus checks” meant for retirees went to dead people. The Social Security Administration issued 52 million payments, and admits that between 8,000 and 10,000 were issued to dead people. It is unclear how the government managed to send a check to Romolo Romonini, who died in Italy 34 years ago and had never been a recipient of Social Security benefits. [2819]

At a “Changing Media in Washington, D.C.” summit held on May 14, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) acting chairman Michael Copps says, “What about the core values of localism, diversity and competition that Free Press fights so valiantly for?” Copps complains about “two decades of mindless deregulation,” the Internet, and bloggers. Although Copps says, “The Fairness Doctrine is long gone and it's not coming back—as much as some conspiracy theorists see it lurking behind every corner,” he also remarks, “we finally got the FCC back on track to do something about the shameful state of minority and female ownership of media properties.” Clearly, Obama will have the FCC playing hardball with radio stations that give less air time to “local issue” and more air time to conservative talk shows hosts like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Mark Levin. Copps warns, “…we still need to get serious about defining broadcasters’ public interest obligations and reinvigorating our license renewal process… It is time to say ‘Good-bye’ to post card renewal every eight years and ‘Hello’ to license renewals every three years with some public interest teeth.” By “public interest teeth” Copps means telling broadcasters to “cut down on conservative talk show programs or we’ll take away your license and give it to a minority owner”—who will no doubt be eager to cancel conservative programming. The American Spectator points out that in February, Copps said, “If markets cannot produce what society really cares about, like a media that reflects the true diversity and spirit of our country, then government has a legitimate role to play.” That can only mean, “Support the Obama agenda, or else.” The Obama administration has its game plan: Keep repeating that there will be no renewal of any “Fairness Doctrine,” but make sure we get the same results while calling it something else.”  [3486]
