                                                T H E   Q U E E N   O F   S H E B A

The Middle East,
July-August, 2002
by Rhona Wells

Only in legend is her existence a certainty, an icon of female power and beauty, the Queen of Sheba is a prominent figure in three religions as well as a popular character in the folklore of the Islamic world and Ethiopia; she is perceived as Queen of the South in the Christian world, Ethiopian in Ethiopia and Yemeni in the Arab world.

The mysteries that surround this mythical monarch provide the link for an exhibition featuring the ancient civilisation of Yemen, at the British Museum in London.

The introductory section of the Queen of Sheba exhibition is dedicated to popular knowledge of this enigmatic figure, from some of the earliest representations from the book of Kings from Ethiopia, to major works of art from the Renaissance and 19th century, not omitting the importance in cinematic terms with the part played by Gina Lollobrigida in King Vidor's movie Solomon and Sheba in 1959.

The earliest reference to her was found in the Bible where she is portrayed as a mysterious queen who travelled far, with a vast camel caravan laden with gold, spices, incense and precious stones to visit King Solomon. The event is represented at the exhibition with the flamboyant painting by Scottish artist John Duncan, entitled of Ivory, Apes and Peacocks but better known as The Queen of Sheba, as well as by the superbly detailed watercolour by Edward Poynter, depicting the arrival of Sheba at Solomons court.

In the Koran the queen is portrayed as a pagan sun worshiper, who on hearing of Solomon's greatness, goes to meet him and converts to Islam. The Queen of Sheba and the hoopoe, Solomon's messenger, depicts an important moment in the Koranic tradition.

The story of the Queen of Sheba is given great credence in Ethiopia, where she is believed to have introduced Christianity and given birth to Solomon's son and heir Menelik, the first King of the Ethiopian Solomonic dynasty.

As a potent historical Yemeni figure, the Queen of Sheba, known in the Arab world as Bilkis, provides the natural links to much of the archaeological work and discoveries from this area, which is entwined with the trade routes of spices, incense and silks, some of the major riches once traded in this area. Many of the Yemeni artefacts on display are part of an exhibition that has visited several European cities since it opened in the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris in 1997.

Ornate incense burners and aromatic resins underline the importance of this trade in the ancient economies; the scent of frankincense wafts through the exhibition bringing to life the heady atmosphere of antiquity and the Arab world. The lucrative incense trade was the mainstay of much of the region's economy; during the reign of Darius (521-486BC) a massive 25 tonnes of frankincense was traded. It was the domestication of the camel, in the first millennium BC that allowed this trade to flourish far and wide as indicated by an ancient alabaster incense burner which features camels as its decorative motif.

Yemen and Oman were the greatest producers of the much sought after frankincense, while Somalia and Yemen were producers of large quantities of myrrh, another resin used in incense recipes, leading to the phenomenal growth in trade routes through the region.

The development of local arts and crafts with influences from the Persian Empire and the classical world are revealed through artefacts such as the exquisite gold bull's head, the symbol of the Sabaean national deity, Almaqah.

A bronze statue of Ma'dikarib is just one of the magnificent treasures unearthed from the Awwam temple at Marib, during the 1951-52 expedition led by Wendell Phillips, the founder of the American Foundation for the Study of Man.

Gold jewellery, pottery, glass, metalwork and decorative architectural elements reveal some of the aspects of daily life. The gold amulet necklaces are particularly attractive and ornate. A life-like bronze right hand dedicated to the god Ta'lab provides a glimpse into popular superstition. Funerary sculptures and grave offerings, including a collection of funerary stela in human form as well as a collection of alabaster heads, including a superb example, dated around the first century BC of a woman--named Miriam by Arab workmen at the time of its discovery--boasting inlaid eyes and braided hair. The riches that were deposited in the ancient graves give additional insights into life in early Yemen.

We may never know whether or not she existed but the enigmatic Queen of Sheba has proved a source of inspiration to writers, composers, artists and storytellers through the ages. Undoubtedly some of her mythical magic is to be found at the British Museum.

But what about Wendell?

There is no doubt that the British Museum has put together an outstanding exhibition with a remarkable selection of treasures from ancient Yemen. But notable by its absence is any substantial reference to the man who devoted a large chunk of his professional career as an archaeologist to uncovering the long lost land of Arabia Felix, Wendell Phillips. Of course Phillips was not the only one responsible for archaeological excavation in Yemen, Joseph Arnaud undertook exploratory work there in the 1840s and later Halevy, Glaser, Rathjens Gertrude Caton-Thompson and the famous explorer Freya Stark all made their mark in one way or another. But Phillips was the first to conduct excavations at Marib--considered the capital of Saba--the ancient name of the area we now know as Yemen--and by far the biggest city in southern Arabia.

In the winter months of 1951/52 Phillips, the director and founder of the American Foundation for the Study of Man (AFSM) excavated the peristyle hall of the Mahram Bilqis, legendary home of the Queen of Sheba. The temple is huge, ovoid in shape with a circumference of almost 1,000 feet. Adjoining it to the north is the peristyle hall, the entrance to the temple. Employing many local workers and teams of oxen, Wendell Phillips and his team were able to unearth 30 feet of sand revealing this grandiose hall with magnificent bronze and alabaster sculptures. The AFSM team discovered a further 420 fragments of statues and statuettes during excavations directed by Phillips at the nearby Awwam Temple. Unfortunately Phillips' mission was curtailed because of insecurity in the region but many of the priceless treasures his team unearthed can be seen at the Queen of Sheba exhibition.

Phillips always planned to return to Yemen but tragically he died in his 40s before he was able to fulfil his ambition. However, the work Wendell Phillips began continues. Some 40 plus years after Phillips was forced to abandon his work, the government of Yemen offered the AFSM the opportunity to return to the area, saying they wanted the sister of Wendell Phillips, Dr Merilyn Phillips Hodgson, to finish the work he had started at the Mahram Bilqis. An international team assembled in the Spring of 1998 to start work once more and a number of important finds have already been recorded.

Speaking to The Middle East in London this week Dr Merilyn Phillips Hodgson was full of praise for the way in which the government of Yemen has helped her to fulfil her brother's dream. "I was still at school when Wendell was involved with the excavations at Marib but I remember his incredible enthusiasm for the project and the feeling that what he was doing was something very special. The government of Yemen has been very supportive of our work. All of us are very excited about the next phase of work at the site."

An extraordinary film on the excavations of 1951/52 made by Wendell Phillips himself has been made available to the British Museum but it does not--so far--feature in the programme of events scheduled to run alongside the exhibition. By special request I was allowed to view it in one of the basement cinemas at the British Museum. The film is grainy, faded and old; narrated by Wendell Phillips speaking at breakneck speed, it makes no pretensions to be any thing other than a pictorial record of events. But despite its age and condition it succeeds in bringing to life the mission and the remarkable man who made it possible, his humour and incredible tenacity--a man whose contribution to the current Queen of Sheba exhibition sadly seems to have been largely overlooked.

You know that Dr Velikovsky has discovered this:
that this Queen of Sheba, was none other than Hatsepsut, the " Queen -of -the -SOUTH "
in his book " Ages- in - Chaos " dd 1950,
this goes to prove that in the( entire )18-th Dynasty, ARABY was egyptian territory( the 3-rd Egypt!)
Alas in conventional history the professional seem to have forgotten that Ancent i9srael was in Yemen

The Present Israel and Jerusalem were newly created as ( Punician-)immigrant colonies from Yemen.
Dr Kamal Salibi from the American Univ. of Beirut has backe this up in his book( 1984.)
The Bible came from ARABY.  Maybe if you wouldn't Quote Dr Velikovsky on this Topic Subject, than
you may be willing to quote Dr. Kamal Salibi instead ?!

IN HIS " CONTROVERSIAL "(?)

Book: " Ages in Chaos:" Dr. Velikovsky amply" prooved" that the Queen of the South,  Hatsepsut and the Queen of SHEBA and Queen BATSHEBA were one and the same Person, but I guess that  ' BIANCA' is not able to see THAT as EVIDENCE" either
So I wonder when she is not willing to name 1.000 quotations from Dr Velikovsky as " Evidence " than in her eyes he has prooved" Nothing " ! Huh Cry Shocked Cry

I wonder if Michael Tsarion has proofed nothing either in her eyes if she says to have no theory of her own how can she say that other theorists are charlatans /

Yes' BIANCA ' I am sorry I may be  a bit dense, Cry Shocked Cry

in that departement but now see  that Since you said to have no particulary theory on Atlantis whereabouts the " Other Theorists " must be ALL Charlatans !
( and  I thought that only CAYCE and DONNELLY were the original Atlantis " Charlatans" here because (unlike Dr Velikovsky, )those two have, like me,
also not used any  Bookmarked quotations! So naturally in Bianca's eyes CAYCE and DONNELLY ( and little me.) must be even bigger 'charlatans' than Dr Velikovsky or M .Tsarion ever were .

Thank you, Ilal!

I enjoy the legends and loved the movie.

Too bad Tyrone Power died while making it.

It would have been an even better movie.......
