Project: Alta, Phase 3, Part 1 -October 1997

aerial survey

"We first approached Joulter Cay in the north. We were fortunate enough to document an unusual natural feature that even the first European explorers had noted: "white water". These areas were so white they almost looked like they were glowing! They were plumes of material coming from the ocean floor. Apparently a significant amount of strontium is present in this material, which is a calcium or carbon related phenomenon. One of the most interesting features here showed up in two of my photos: a large feature resembling a printed capital letter "E" that appears to be several hundred feet long (comparing it to other surface features) and covered with sand. It is east of Joulter Cay and under water. Another feature was photographed off of a nearby island (shaped like a rounded triangle) with two parallel lines curving in to shore." -Bill Donato
