What are subsurface circles at Poverty Point?

Associated Press - June 20, 2009 3:54 PM ET

EPPS, La. (AP) - Centimeter by centimeter, students are taking miniature trowels to scrape for history in holes 1 meter wide, 2 meters long and 2 feet deep.

Geology students from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Mississippi State University are working together.

Any sign of lighter soil in the red clay could signal the most significant discovery in decades at the Poverty Point State Historic Site.

Poverty Point is 1 of the most significant archeological sites in the western hemisphere. It dates back from 1800 to 1400 B.C.

The dig is in an area previously believed to be devoid of any significant features.

But scientists using magnetic sensors located earthen circles 80 to 160 feet wide beneath the surface. The students are looking for evidence of what those were.

Beats me
but if you thought about a relevancy with the Atlantis canal-circles forget it,
those were artificially dug as a moon observatorium called a "Planetarium"for night watchmen

It is believed that Poverty Point had several circular post rings, similar to what is called "Woodhenge" at Cahokia. These were used for star sightings and solar and lunar calculations. There is evidence of several of these that was found in the past and it is likely that what they are looking at are the areas where these large rings wer located. It is a shame that the site does not have more visitors as it is as fantastic as many in the UK and elsewhere. And portions of Poverty Point are at least 5500-years old.
