Fund created to safeguard archaeological finds

Associated Press
June 12, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS

- State officials have created a new trust fund to help private homeowners comply with state law when significant archaeological finds are made on their land.

The new archaeology preservation trust fund is intended for homeowners who have accidentally discovered an artifact, burial object or human remains on their property.

It will help those homeowners comply with state-approved plans for excavating each site or protecting often irreplaceable artifacts from further disturbance.

State lawmakers made a change to state law last year allowing the state's Department of Natural Resources to create the fund, which is financed by gifts and grants. The DNR says people who want to help save the state's archaeological treasures can contribute to the new fund.
