The Magellan Effect

atlantismaps.com/chapter_4.html

Details Johannes Schöner's selection and overscaling of an ancient map of Antarctica onto his 1524 globe. The continent appears to have been stretched to conform to two recent finds by Ferdinand Magellan. Antarctica's Atka Bay is positioned to represent a southern bay in the Strait of Magellan, while the rest of the continent is enlarged in order to fit Antarctica's Carney and Siple Islands high in the Pacific Ocean to represent a lone pair of desolate islands also discovered by Magellan.
