The Origin of the Lemurian Legend

Perhaps the most popular example of Mount Shasta lore, and a legend involving the first claim by non-Native Americans for a spiritual connection with the mountain, concerns the mystical brotherhood believed to roam through jeweled corridors deep inside the mountain. According to Miesse, "In the mid-19th Century paleontologists coined the term "Lemuria" to describe a hypothetical continent, bridging the Indian Ocean, which would have explained the migration of lemurs from Madagascar to India. Lemuria was a continent which submerged and was no longer to be seen. By the late 19th Century occult theories had developed, mostly through the theosophists, that the people of this lost continent of Lemuria were highly advanced beings. The location of the folklore 'Lemuria' changed over time to include much of the Pacific Ocean. In the 1880s a Siskiyou County, California, resident named Frederick Spencer Oliver wrote A Dweller on Two Plants, or, the Dividing of the Way which described a secret city inside of Mount Shasta, and in passing mentioned Lemuria. Edgar Lucian Larkin, a writer and astronomer, wrote in 1913 an article in which he reviewed the Oliver book. In 1925 a writer by the name of Selvius wrote "Descendants of Lemuria: A Description of an Ancient Cult in America" which was published in the Mystic Triangle, Aug., 1925 and which was entirely about the mystic Lemurian village at Mount Shasta. Selvius reported that Larkin had seen the Lemurian village through a telescope. In 1931 Wisar Spenle Cerve published a widely read book entitled Lemuria: The Lost Continent of the Pacific in which the Selvius material appeared in a slightly elaborated fashion. The Lemuria-Mount Shasta legend has developed into one of Mount Shasta's most prominent legends" (1993; 136).

According to Zanger, Frederick Spencer Oliver was a Yrekan teen who claimed that his hand began to uncontrollably write a manuscript dictated to him by Phylos, a Lemurian spirit (1993). Meisse points out that Oliver's novel of spiritual fiction is "The single most important source of  Mount Shasta's esoteric legends. The book contains the first published references linking Mt. Shasta to: 1) a mystical brotherhood; 2) a tunnel entrance to a secret city inside Mount Shasta; 3) Lemuria; 4) the concept of "I AM"; 5) "channeling" of ethreal spirits; 6)a panther surprise" (1993; 143). The author claims to have written most of the novel within sight of Mount Shasta, and autobiographical telling of the story from Phylos the Thibetan's point of view is an interesting twist. We have included a few pages of text from the novel, including the reference to the mystic brotherhood that lives amid "the walls, polished as by jewelers, though excavated by giants; floors carpeted with long, fleecy gray fabric that looked like fur, but was a mineral product; ledges intersected by the builders, and in their wonderful polish exhibiting veinings of gold, of silver, of green copper ores, and maculations of precious stones." (Oliver 1905; 248).

In 1908, Adelia H. Taffinder wrote an article, "A Fragment of the Ancient Continent of Lemuria," for the Atlantic Monthly. In her article she links the concept of Lemuria to California, and Meisse proposses that the article, "with its Theosophical teachings and extension of the Lemurian Myth to California, may have been part of the research material involved in the creation of the Mount Shasta Lemurian Myth as presented by Selvius in 1925 and Creve in 1931" (1993; 147).

Selvius' 1925 two-page article, "Decendants of Lemuria" is, according to Meisse, "the singlemost inportant document in the establishment of the modern Mt. Shasta-Lemurian myth," so we have included Selvius' full-text article.  Selvius claims that Professor Edgar Lucian Larkin viewed the Lemurian site on Mount Shasta using his telescope: "Even no less a careful investigator and scientist than Prof. Edgar Lucin Larkin, for many years director of Mount Lowe Observatory, said in newspaper and magazine articles that he had seen, on many occasions, the great temple of this mystic village, while gazing through a long-distance telescope."

Although Selvius' article is the most historically interesting, Wishar Spenle Cerve's 1931 Lemuria: The Lost Continent of the Pacific is, according to Meisse, "responsible for the legend's widespread popularity" (1993; 146). Perhaps most intriging is Meisse's speculation that "it appears from the similarity of material that "Selvius" and "Cerve" were one and the same person" (1993; 145). Further muddying the waters is Edward Stul's worth claim that "Wishar Spenly Cerve" is really a letter-for-letter pseudonym for "Harve Spencer Lewis,"  first Imperator of the Rosicrucian Order of North and South America.  Still, it is Cerve's book, published by the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis, that has provided the popular description of the Lemurians as "tall, graceful, and agile," and as visitors that "would come to one of the smaller towns and trade nuggets and gold dust for some modern commodities" (250).

The idea of a lost continent (and the subsequent existence of Lemurians on Mount Shasta), quickly became widely known, though perhaps not so widely believed. In 1939, Mount Shasta botanist William Cooke was in a Cincinati library when he was asked if he "knew anything about the LeMurians." A few months later, in a Mount Shasta Herald article called "Lights on Mt. Shasta: Evidences Discounted,"  Cooke questions the legend that Larkin could have used a telescope to see any structures on Mount Shasta. About a year later, in another Herald article, titled "Wm. Bridge Cooke Discusses 'Lost Continent' Book," Cooke questioned the possibility of a Lemuria or Mu (1941).

Today the belief that Lemurians inhabit the mountain is still very popular, and anyone visiting the local bookstores will likely be suprised by the plethora of texts on the subject.

Mount Shasta Herald
Lights on Mt. Shasta
By William Bridge Cooke
June 27, 1940

During the past winter I spent considerable time in the reading rooms of the Public Library of Cincinnati.  When it was learned that I lived on Mount Shasta during part of the year I was asked by attendants if I knew anything about the LeMurians.  Naturally I was surprised to learn that people in this section of the country were interested in these phenomena.

Upon looking further into the matter I found that the Public Library had a rather complete file of AMORC Rosicrucian, and other Rosicrucian literature, as well as at least four volumes of the Saint Germain series issued by the Ballardites.  Incidentally a rather large “I AM Sanctuary” is maintained in Cincinnati.  To get into it one must have read and passed an examination on the first three Ballard books.  Thus these volumes of which the library has several copies each, are in constant demand.

The AMORC book in which I was most interested is one by Cerve entitled “LeMuria”.  This was published in about 1932.  Cerve, whose style sounds suspiciously like that of Spencer Lewis, dreamed up a fantastic tale of the origin and fall of the lost continent of LeMuria, or Mu, part of which is based on fact, and apparently part of which is based on secret documents.

In a final chapter of the book the author deals with recent facts and myths which tend to show to him, at least, the presence of LeMurians, or the Great White Brotherhood, vulgarly known as “White Indians”, in California, a remnant of Mu.

One of these stories demands our attention.  Cerve reports that a Dr. Edgar Lucin Larkin of the Mt. Lowe Observatory saw a strange phenomenon with his telescope.  He was searching for an object on the earth, the distance from which was known, by which to calibrate his instrument.  In looking through the telescope, supposedly placed parallel to the earth’s surface, he finally brought Mount Shasta into range.  Around the foothills of the mountain and at about 30 miles from the mountain Dr. Larkin reported seeing a shining metal object, which, on focussing, turned out to be a massive oriental temple.  At a later date, in order to check these observations, Dr. Larkin saw a number of shining white marble temples in Greek style.  At night he could see lights in the vicinity.

I have not quoted the story by have only taken parts of it—enough of it so that my readers my know the source of the tale, repeated by Brisbane several years ago, concerning the seeing of a light “somewhere, sometime and by someone” on the mountain—proof of the local existence of these “Masters”.

For those of my readers who are interested, I shall now try to debunk this story.  Mt. Lowe, back of Los Angeles, is approximately 800 miles, as the crow flies, south of Mount Shasta.  The earth’s surface curves as one would expect if one recognized the earth as a nearly spherical object.  The latest list of observatories and astronomers in the world does not mention the existence of a Mt. Lowe Observatory, or of a Dr. Edgar Lucin Larkin, and it does mention some very inconspicuous persons and institutions.  Mount Shasta is 14,161 feet above sea level at the summit.  Mt. Lowe is about one mile, not more than 5500 feet, above sea level.

During the last 10 years, in an issue of the Mazama, journal of the Mazamas of Portland, Oregon, there was published an article in which it was demonstrated mathematically that a person standing on top Mt. Hood, 11,250 feet, could not see the top of Mount Shasta, 400 miles south and 14,161 feet above the sea.  Thus I knew some mathematical formula existed by which this story could be disproved.

I corresponded with Dr. Hans Lewy, Associate Professor of Mathematics, University of California, who climbed Mt. Shasta last summer; and I consulted a book on surveying and a newspaper article.  The results are as follows:

Dr. Lewy found, by good geometrical procedure, that one could see 125 miles (approximately) from the summit of Mount Shasta to the horizon.  From the summit of a mountain a mile high one could see the horizon at a distance of 89 miles away.  Thus Mt. Lowe would have to be 214 miles from Mt. Shasta in order for a person standing on the summit of either to see even the top of the other—and Mt. Lowe is 800 miles away.

In the book on Geodesy, or surveying, a correction table was found for the earth’s curvature and refraction.  Together with formulas of geometrical nature it was discovered that a person would be able to see the horizon 156 miles. from the summit of Mount Shasta.  And that in order to see Mount Shasta from Mount Lowe, even the highest tip on a clear day, one would have to build a town on Mount Lowe which would reach more than 40 miles into the air.  This sounds too fantastic to believe until one draws a scale map and sees how much curvature there is in 800 miles of earth’s surface.

In commenting on a new popular priced aeroplane recently put on sale, a formula was published in the Cincinnati Enquirer for March 24, 1940 which gives a method of finding out how far away the horizon is from different altitudes.  In this formula one takes the square root of the altitude in feet and multiply by 1.44 miles.  Using this system it will be discovered that the horizon is about 179 miles from the summit of Mount Shasta.

It is obvious that the facts of clear weath, atmosphere, and intervening mountian ranges play a large part in determining how much of these miles a person can actually see, as anyone who has tried to see the ocean on a clear day from the Summit well knows.

Using the last set of figures, the farthest Mt. Lowe could be, in a straight line, from Mt. Shasta would be 240 miles in order that the summit of one could be seen from the summit of the other.  Nothing has yet been said about the foothills, which would be covered up by intervening hills from the observer’s view even should the earth be proved flat.  However, we leave to the judgment of the reader conclusions as to the validity of this story which sounds to us more like an opium dream.

Mysterious
Mount Shasta

By Chuck Woodbury

Mt. Shasta is California’s most beautiful mountain. On a clear day you can see it from at least 100 miles away. People who live near it have remarkable stories about the 14,162-foot Cascade volcano.

The most remarkable stories are the legends about the mysterious people who supposedly live inside the mountain. They are said to be descendants of an ancient society from Lemuria, a lost continent that sunk eons ago. These Lemurians supposedly live deep inside the mountain in apartments plated with gold. In this secret colony, they preserve their ancient customs.

Lemurians are commonly described as graceful and tall -- seven feet and up -- with long, flowing hair. They dress in white robes and sandals. They are said to have long, slender necks which they adorn with beautiful decorative collars made of beads or precious stones.

Perhaps their most unusual physical characteristic is a walnut-sized organ that protrudes from the center of their foreheads. This sixth-sense enables Lemurians to communicate among themselves by extra-sensory perception.

A Dr. M. Doreal claimed years ago that he visited the Lemurians inside their mountain. “The space we came into was about two miles in height and about 20 miles long and 15 miles wide,” he wrote. “It was as light as a bright summer day because suspended almost in the center of that great cavern of space was a giant glowing mass of light.”

Another man reported that he fell asleep on Mt. Shasta, to be awakened by a Lemurian who led him inside the mountain to his “cave, which was paved with gold.” The Lemurian told the man that there were a series of tunnels left by volcanoes that were under the earth like freeways -- a world within a world.

Lemurians supposedly mastered atomic energy, extra-sensory perception, electronics and science as long as 18,000 years ago. Back then, they knew how to propel boats using energy radiated from rocks. They had airships and flew them to Atlantis and other places.

Today, people report seeing strange lights on the mountain. One explanation is that they are spacecraft coming and going from a fortress deep in the mountain.

Lemurians, it is said, possess supernatural powers that enable them to disappear at will -- one reason why they aren’t spotted very often. Their power also allows them to “will” an intruder away.

You can’t visit the Mt. Shasta area without reading or hearing about Lemurians. The local chamber of commerce must like the publicity, because it attracts tourists.

Still, talk to the local residents and you’ll hear the popular belief about the Lemurians.

“I think there could have been a city of Lemuria, but as far as them being in the mountain, I don’t believe it,” said Jan Taylor, owner of Jan’s Shear Magic Salon in Mt. Shasta City and a local resident for 27 years.

“I don’t believe any of it,” said resident Pam Minafo. “I believe in things I can see.”

Doug Gilliam of Doug’s Barber Shop agreed. “I’ve been here 34 years and I’ve never seen any Lemurians. Hey, they can say anything, but let them produce it. They even said there’s a black panther up there.”

My guess is what’s really inside Mt. Shasta is dirt, rocks and some lava.

About Mount Shasta

Mount Shasta is a most majestic mountain, part of the Cascade Mountain Range, located in Siskiyou County in Northern California about 45 miles from the Oregon border. Mount Shasta is the cone of an extinct volcano rising to a height of over 14,162 feet above sea level, and is one of the largest volcanic peaks in the continental United States.

Mount Shasta is a very special place to say the least; it represents much more than just a mere mountain. Mount Shasta can be considered as one of the most sacred places on this planet. The mountain is a mystic power source for this planet; actually, this sacred mountain is an incarnation of the Great Central Sun of this universe. It is a focus for angels, spirit-guides, spaceships, masters from the Light Realm, and the home of the survivors of Ancient Lemuria, which sank under the waves of the Pacific Ocean a little over 12,000 years ago. For those gifted with clairvoyant abilities, Mount Shasta is embraced in a gigantic, etheric purple pyramid whose capstone reaches far beyond this planet into space, and connects us intergalactically to the Confederation of Planets for this sector of the Milky Way Galaxy. This awesome pyramid is also created as an inverted version of itself, reaching far down to the very core of the Earth. You can call Mount Shasta the entry point of the Light-Grids of this planet, where most of the energy comes first from the galactic and universal core before it is disseminated to other mountains and into the grids. Most mountaintops, especially tall mountains, are Beacons of Light, feeding the light-grids of this planet.

Strange lights and sounds are often seen or heard on the mountain. Lenticular clouds, shadows and outstanding sunsets add to the mystical aura of the mountain. Several tunnels stretch far into the interior of this majestic mountain. Mount Shasta is also the home of the present-day Lemurians, survivors of the sinking of the continent of Lemuria over 12,000 years ago. Yes, our Lemurian brothers and sisters are real; they are well and physically alive, living in the subterranean city of "Telos" underneath sacred Mount Shasta.

Prior to the sinking of their continent, fully aware of the eventual destiny of their beloved continent, the ancient Lemurians, using their mastery of energy, crystals, sound and vibrations, hollowed out a vast underground city, with the intention of preserving their culture, their treasures and their records of ancient Earth's history; history that has been lost since the sinking of Atlantis. Lemuria was once a vast continent, and larger than North America, connected to parts of California, Oregon, Nevada and Washington. This large continent disappeared overnight into the Pacific Ocean over 12,000 years ago in a vast cataclysm. All inhabitants of the Earth at that time considered Lemuria, their motherland, and there was much weeping on the Earth when at the time of its destruction. About 25,000 Lemurians at that time were able to migrate into the interior of the mountain, the most important of their various administration centers prior to the sinking of their Motherland. And beloveds, you who are reading this writing, know in your heart, that they have never left. They are still here in physical immortal bodies, totally unlimited, living a life of pure Heaven on Earth.

Wondrous little people, often referred to as "The Little People of Mount Shasta", are also kind of physical, but not quite, and they are very often seen visually around the mountain. They are third dimensional beings like humans, but they live on a slightly higher level of the third dimension, such as third and one half level, and they have the ability to make themselves visible and invisible at will. The reason they are not showing themselves physically to many people is because they have a collective fear of humans. At one time, when they were as physical as we are, and could not make themselves invisible at will, humans living at that time viciously maligned them. They became so fearful of humans, that they collectively asked the spiritual hierarchy of this planet for the dispensation to be elevated in their frequency, so that they could make themselves invisible at will, in order to be able to continue their evolution unharmed and in peace.

There are also reports of the Bigfoot race of people being seen on some remote areas of Mount Shasta, along with many other mysterious beings. The Bigfoot people are now very few in numbers around the world and around Mount Shasta. They are of average intelligence and possess a peaceful heart. They have also obtained the dispensation to be able to make themselves invisible at will to be able to avoid confrontation with us and thus, like the little people, avoid being harmed, mutilated and used as a slave race.

Things have not changed so much on Earth in our days. We have not yet, as a species, understood that we are guests here on this planet. We are the guests of our gracious Mother Earth who has volunteered to provide a platform of evolution for the many kingdoms she has chosen to allow to be evolving here. Humans are only one of those kingdoms. It was always intended and agreed at the beginning that all kingdoms would be honored, and be allowed to share this planet "equally". And it was that way for a very long time at the beginning. But for hundreds of thousands of years, humans have taken over, arrogantly thinking that they are the superior race, and that they have the right to control and manipulate other kingdoms that appear to be more vulnerable than they.

Many of the species of the animal kingdom have also become invisible. They are still here, but in a slightly higher frequency and thus, invisible to us. Where do you think that all those supposedly "extinct" species have gone? Many of them are extinct because they have made a collective choice to not interact with us any more. Those species of the animal kingdom, which are still here physically with us, are not always loved and honored by humans. Go into your heart and explore how most of the animals are treated, used and abused by the supposedly "superior race". Are all animals treated, honored and loved as beings of other kingdoms meant to share this planet with us "equally"? Think how so many whales, dolphins, cows, chickens, cats, dogs, horses, etc. etc. have been and still are used. The list is endless, and could be the subject of several encyclopedias. (I know that this last paragraph will raise many eyebrows, but it needs to be said. Let's now continue with Mount Shasta).

Today, several spiritual groups surround the Mount Shasta area. Many truth seekers who have felt and heard in their heart the "Call of the Mountain" have moved into this area where they feel they have finally "come home". The dim memory of their far distant Lemurian ancestry is calling them back to a former point of origin.

On a clear day, Mount Shasta stands as a white jewel and can be seen from at least 100 miles away. People who live nearby have remarkable stories about the 14,162-foot Cascade volcano. The most remarkable stories are the legends about the mysterious people who live inside the mountain. They are said to be descendants of an ancient society from the lost continent of Lemuria, living deep inside the mountain in round houses, and enjoying unlimited health and wealth, and true brotherhood. They have preserved their ancient culture.

The Lemurians living underground, beneath the mountain, are commonly described as graceful and tall - seven feet and up - with long, flowing hair. They dress in white robes and sandals, but they have also been seen in very colorful clothing. They are said to have long, slender necks and bodies, which they adorn with beautiful decorative collars made of beads or precious stones. They have evolved their sixth-sense, which enables them to communicate among themselves by extra-sensory perception. They can also teleport and make themselves invisible at will. Their mother tongue is the Lemurian language, called Solara Maru. They also speak an impeccable English with a slight British accent. They have chosen to learn English as a second language because they are situated in America where the people who live on their roof-top speak English as their main language. They have become an ascended civilization living in a fifth dimensional vibration and consciousness.

Dr. M. Doreal claimed years ago that he visited the Lemurians inside their mountain. He said that the space they came into was about two miles in height, about 20 miles long and 15 miles wide. He wrote that the light inside the mountain was as bright as a summer day because suspended almost in the center of that great cavern of space was a giant glowing mass of light. Another man reported that he fell asleep on Mount Shasta to be awakened by a Lemurian who led him inside the mountain to his cave, which was paved with gold. The Lemurian told the man that there were a series of tunnels left by volcanoes that were under the earth like freeways -- a world within a world.

The Lemurians supposedly have mastered atomic energy, telepathic and clairvoyant skills, electronics and science as long as 18,000 years ago. They have technology that makes us, surface dwellers, look as toddlers compared to them. They control most of their technology with their mind. Back then, they knew how to propel boats using energy radiated from crystals. They had airships and flew them to Atlantis and other places. Today, they have a whole fleet of spaceships called the "Silver Fleet" with which they come in and out of the mountain and go out into space. They also have the ability to make their spaceships invisible and soundless to avoid being detected by the local and national military.

Many people report seeing strange lights on the mountain. One explanation is that there are spacecrafts coming and going constantly from a spaceport deep within the mountain. Mount Shasta is not only a home for the Lemurians, but it is also an inter-planetary and inter-galactic multi-dimensional portal. There is a huge etheric city of Light above the mountain called the Crystal City of Light of the Seven Rays. At some point in our near future, hopefully within the next twelve to twenty years, this wondrous city of Light is destined to be lowered into our physical realm, and become the first city of Light to manifest tangibly on the surface of this planet. In order for this to happen, the people who live here will have to match this vibration in their consciousness.

You can easily visit the Mount Shasta area without reading or hearing about Lemurians, but if you have some former connections with them, you may be blessed with some revelations. Each year, Mount Shasta draws visitors from all over the world, some seeking spiritual insight, others seek to glory in the beauty and natural wonders that "mother nature" has to offer here in this unique alpine region.

Everyone loves a mystery, especially a mystery about Mount Shasta. There have been many fascinating myths and legends written about this northern California giant, and the solitary mountain simply slumbers on, her secrets intact. But ever so often, another mysterious story surfaces, new casts of characters emerge and attention is centered once more on the mystic mountain. That's the way it has been for years and probably will always be. Mount Shasta has a tendency to reveal "herself" only to those who honor life, honor themselves for whom they truly are, honor the Earth, and honor all other kingdoms sharing this planet.

Another story about Mount Shasta!

The leading character in the following story is a baffling man by the name of J.C. Brown who, in 1904, was employed with the Lord Cowdray Mining Company of London, England. He was hired to prospect for precious metals in this gold-bearing region, and while here, he ran onto a section of rock in the face of a cliff which didn't seem to match the surrounding formation. While examining the curious stone, he noticed it blocked the entrance to what appeared to be a cave. Brown, a geologist, thought the entire scene was unnatural and began to dig out the mouth of the cave, which was full of debris and vegetation. He began to see that it was not a small cave and after much digging found himself in a tunnel which curved downward into the mountain. Equipped with lanterns and miner's paraphernalia he set out to explore.

"Three miles from the mouth of the tunnel I struck a cross-section containing gold-bearing ore and farther on, I struck another cross-section where an ancient race apparently had mined copper," he said later. He believed the other cross-sections outcropped on some other part of the mountain. The decline continued approximately 11 miles inside the mountain to where he found what he called "The Village Blets", where many rooms and chambers were found.

The rooms were literally full of various plates, all inscribed neatly. The walls were lined with tempered copper and hung with shields and wall-pieces made of gold. Some of the golden plates he found were engraved with certain drawings and hieroglyphics. Rooms opened into other chambers, one of which appeared to have been a place of worship. In addition, there were 13 statues made of copper and gold and a large sun design from which protruded golden streamers. The way the objects were strewn about, he had the feeling the occupants of the underground village had left on the spur of the moment. And then he came upon a macabre scene - in one chamber he counted 27 skeletons, the smallest of which was 6'6" and the largest stretching out more than 10 feet. Two of the bodies were mummified, each clad in colorful, ornate robes. Brown spent many days exploring, studying the hieroglyphics, and indelibly imprinting them in his mind. He was excited about this great archaeological find and decided to leave the tunnel and its contents exactly as he had found them. He would return, he thought. But first, he cleverly concealed the entrance of the tunnel and marked on his map exactly were it was on the mountain.

The next three decades, those spanning 1904-1934, Brown's activities seem to be shrouded in mystery, but it is known that he studied the literature and philosophy pertaining to the lost continent of Mu and the lost Lemurian civilization, among other lore of prehistoric races. Years of study and comparison of the hieroglyphics and pictographs he had found in the tunnel convinced him that they were, indeed, records of the Lemurian race. And so, after 30 long years, Brown surfaced. He decided that the glory of those Lemurians and the golden artifacts still hanging untouched in the cavern of the mountain should be shared with others. In 1934, at the age of 79, Brown appeared in Stockton, California. His idea was to organize a group of people interested in accompanying him, at his expense to Mount Shasta, and once there, they would explore further the ancient tunnel he had found in 1904.

Eighty eager Stockton residents, including a newspaper editor, a museum curator, a retired printer, several scientists, and other solid citizens formed a group to investigate the tunnel with J.C. Brown. They met nightly for six weeks to plan the expedition, and also to listen to Brown's fabulous tales of lost continents, hieroglyphics, and the enticing descriptions of the treasure, which seemed to be just within their grasp. Some even gave up their jobs and some sold much of their personal property during those six weeks, so certain were they that their lives would be altered and enriched after their remarkable discoveries. The editor and the curator questioned Brown closely, going over and over the details of his bizarre story. Brown disclosed that he had spent much of the previous thirty years searching for ancient records pertaining to the Lemurians, and his mental pictures of the hieroglyphics in the tunnel village had convinced him that he had found the lost link in the story of civilization.

And he told them he believed the golden antiquities he had found were those of the Lemurians or their descendants. Brown even promised to provide a yacht to transport the group as far north as they could go by water. They would leave on June 19th at 1:00 p.m. The day dawned clear and beautiful, and 80 Stockton citizens were waiting at the designated time for their leader to appear. They had met the evening before in order to consummate the final details, after which J.C. Brown bid them adieu until the next afternoon. However, Brown was never seen again by any of the group, and what happened to him is anybody's guess. The members of the group feared for his life, as he had previously mentioned that he had once been kidnapped by people who do not want this information out, (usually government agencies); and that he had barely escaped with his life. They called in the Stockton police, but no trace of the man was found. He had completely disappeared.

Unfortunately or fortunately, J.C. Brown had never revealed the exact location of the secret tunnel in the mountain, and it is highly probable that these treasures of a prehistoric era will never again delight the eyes of another human. Wreathed in clouds and mist and sealed throughout the ages in ice and snow, Mout Shasta keeps her secrets to herself, as always.

There are numerous accounts and sightings suggesting that an ancient race that utilizes high technology now resides in the bowels of Mount Shasta in the Cascade Range of northern California. According to researcher William F. Hamilton, who claims to have met representatives of this society, the inhabitants of the subterranean 'city of Telos' underneath Mount Shasta are usually tall, blue-eyed blonds who number in excess of over one-and-a-half million in their large 5-leveled, 20-mile long underground city. Mount Shasta has been a major site for UFO contacts for decades. These accounts are so well known that many of the travel guides to the Shasta area mention the legends of the ancient people who are said to dwell within this ancient volcanic peak.

"I run across some fascinating people in the course of my investigations, said Mr. Hamilton, who tell me many unusual stories. While on the trail for reports of UFO base locations, I met a young, very pretty blonde girl with almond-shaped eyes and small perfect teeth, whose name is Bonnie. Bonnie told me an incredible story, and has related a volume of interesting information. Bonnie is sincere, cheerful, and rational. She says she was born in 1951 in a city called TELOS that was built inside an artificial dome-shaped cavern in the Earth a mile or so beneath Mount Shasta.

"Bonnie, her mother (Rana Mu), her father (Ra Mu), her sister Judy, her cousins Lorae and Matox, live and move in our society, returning frequently to TELOS for rest and recuperation. Bonnie relates that her people use boring machines to bore tunnels in the Earth. These boring machines heat the rock to incandescence, and then vitrify it, thus eliminating the need for beams and supports. A tube transit tunnel is used to connect the cities that exist in various subterranean regions in our hemisphere. The tube trains are propelled by electromagnetic impulses up to speeds of 2500 mph. One tube connects with one of their cities in the Matto Grosso jungle of Brazil".

"They grow food hydroponically under full-spectrum lighting with their gardens attended by automatons. The food and resources of Telos are distributed in plenty to the million-and- a-half population that thrives on a no-money economy".

"I met Bonnie's cousin, Matox, who, like her, is a strict vegetarian and holds the same attitudes concerning the motives of the U.S. government. "Your government is constantly guarding against unusual discoveries", he said. The Lemurians' advanced awareness and technology assist them to remain vigilant and unnoticed".

"Science Fiction? "Bonnie is a real person", said Mr. Hamilton. "Many have met her. Is she perpetrating a hoax? And for what motive? She does not seek publicity and I had a devil of a time getting her to meetings to talk with others, but she has done so. There has been little variation in her story and her answers in the past three years. She has given me excellent technical insight on the construction of a crystal-powered generator that extracts ambient energy. Bonnie's father, Ra Mu, is 300 years old and a member of the ruling council of Telos".

"Many tunnels are unsafe and closed off. All tube transit tunnels are protected and are designed to eject uninvited guests. Does Bonnie have the answers that we are looking for? I don't know... Bonnie says she would like to satisfy our needs for proof and will work with me on a satisfactory answer to that problem, but she is unconcerned with whether people accept her or not. Bonnie is humorous, easy-going and well poised, yet sometimes she becomes brooding and mysterious".

When Bill Hamilton asked "Bonnie" to elaborate about the power-sources which her people utilize to propel the so-called "flying saucer" crafts, she replied: "A lot of it is crystal generated, particularly the atmospheric vehicles. An Ion-Mercury engine drives the planet-to-planet vehicles. Spaceships can reach speeds way beyond light -- they can enter hyperspace-which means you generate into the fourth dimension. This is controlled by an on-board computer that takes you into and out of hyperspace," she continues. "I know this is a simplification. When you are on a ship going into hyperspace, you will hear this vibration, and a loud screaming sound when you enter, then you will hear nothing..."

Bonnie speaks about her home, Telos, a city built a mile or so beneath Mount Shasta, CA. "This city was constructed just prior to the termination of the Lemurian continent. When the scientists and priests of Lemuria realized their continent was about to sink, they petitioned a group called the Agharta Network, which controlled all the subterranean cities. They asked permission to build their own city underneath Mount Shasta. There was an original set of caves there. We chose to enlarge these caverns to make them bigger and more livable. There are now one and one half million of us living there."

Mt. Shasta and Mt. Arunachala*

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

by Wendell E. Wilkinson

Mt. Shasta is located at the northern extremity of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range located in Siskiyou County in Northern California. Mt. Shasta is the cone of an extinct volcano rising to a height of over 14,380 feet above sea level. It is the largest volcanic peak in the continental United States.

Mt. Shasta is a special place. The mountain is a mystic power source. It is the focus for angels, spirits, spaceships, and the Lemurians. Strange lights, clouds, shadows and sunsets add to the mystical aura of the mountain.

A long tunnel stretches away, far into the interior of majestic Mt. Shasta. The Lemurians lie at the tunnel's far end. Using their mastery over sound and vibrations they hollowed out an underground city. Lemuria was once a great continent connected to parts of California, Oregon, and Washington. Lemuria disappeared into the Pacific Ocean many thousands of years ago in a vast cataclysm. Some Lemurian people migrated to Mt. Shasta when their continent began to sink.

The Saint Germain Foundation is an organization with a worldwide membership of over five thousand people that began when the group's founder, Guy W. Ballard, claimed to have had an encounter with the "Ascended Master" Saint Germain on the slopes of Mt. Shasta in 1930. Ballard stopped one day at a mountain spring for a drink and felt a strange current pass through his body. Then he encountered Saint Germain. Germain gave Ballard some small cakes which gave him a new sense of health and clearness of mind.

In 1985 Tai Situpa Rinpoche, one of Tibet's most revered lamas, flew over Mt. Shasta while on his way to San Francisco from Europe. He said that he was amazed about the majestic appearance of the mountain. "It looked perfect! It stayed in my mind and I felt that one day I must go and do a traditional Tibetan ceremony there to offer prayers for the environment." Rinpoche later on did perform such a ceremony in October 1989. At that time he said, "We should thank the spirits of this place, they have given us a perfect day; they recognize our intentions."

American Indians believed that Mt. Shasta was of such immense grandeur that its existence could only be attributed to the Great Spirit. They also believed that an invisible race of little people lived on its slopes as guardians. If you tried to climb the mountain and were found to be an unworthy person, they would throw you off to your death! They also have legends of Bigfoot and other mysterious beings and forces connected with Mt. Shasta.

Today Mt. Shasta is surrounded by groups like the Saint Germain Foundation, Planetary Citizens, Brotherhood of the White Temple, Radiant School of Seekers and Servers, League of Voluntary Effort (LOVE), and a Zen monastery, among others, which have felt a calling to locate near it. The Harmonic Convergence gathering of over five thousand people was held there August 16, 1987. The occasion was intended to herald a new phase of world cooperation and harmony. Mt. Shasta was chosen because it was considered among the most sacred mountains on earth.

Another sacred mountain is to be found in Tiruvannamalai, South India. This is Mt. Arunachala, which is considered by many in India to be a form of the Hindu God Shiva. The Hindu sage Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi said that Mt. Arunachala was a remnant of the lost continent of Atlantis. That and the fact the mountain was formed by a volcanic eruption make its story similar to that of Mt. Shasta. Actually, you will soon see that there are other similarities as well!

According to the occultist Kenneth Grant, Mt. Arunachala constitutes the most powerful concentration of spiritual energy on this planet. And from the ancient Hindu scripture known as The Skanda Purana we have these verses: "Arunachala is the most sacred holy place of all. It is the heart of the world. Know it to be the secret and sacred heart-center of the God Shiva. Meditate then that in the Heart of Arunachala surges the spirit glory within which is contained all the worlds. I ordain that residence within a circle of thirty miles of this mountain shall alone suffice to burn off all defects and blend a person with the Supreme Spirit."

Brilliant lights are seen to sail about Arunachala that seem to be under intelligent control. There is supposed to be a city inside of the mountain. It is inhabited by yogic adepts. Upon death if you are not quite high enough to merge with the Supreme Spirit then you might at least go to live inside Arunachala. The adepts from inside Arunachala can change their shape to any human or animal form and travel incognito in the outside world. This is similar to the stories about the Lemurians from Mt. Shasta. The Hindu sage Ramana Maharshi said that Arunachala was the top of the spiritual axis of the earth and that there must be another mountain corresponding to it at the opposite side of the globe. I am suggesting in this article that that other mountain is Mt. Shasta. But whether that is true or not, there is no doubt in my mind that Mt. Shasta and Mt. Arunachala are two of the major spiritual power spots of planet Earth.

By Sharon Callahan
Written for Mt. Shasta Magazine - Spring 1995

Many of us who have come to live in Shasta, or who are drawn to visit The Mountain, are prompted by subtle remembrances of Lemuria, for Shasta was part of that "lost" continent. Any of us having Lemurian ancestry will be attracted to Shasta in part because of her abundant and highly conscious plant life.

The vibrational effects of flowers and flower essences were recognized and known deeply by the Lemurians. Herbs were used as food, and flower essences were taken as sacraments. The Lemurians collected the herbs and flowers wild, and communicated with them as spiritual friends. Each plant was known by its personality, or spiritual attribute. The Lemurians would visit a plant or tree in the same way that we visit a human friend when we need the reflection of that individual's particular quality of being.

Many people today are re-awakening this long dormant relationship between themselves and plants, simply for the tremendous joy of doing so, not to mention the healing benefits. Shasta is the ideal setting for the reuniting of the human and plant life streams, and I would encourage all visitors to Shasta to spend some time tuning in to the healing abundance of her plant life.

Developing an intimate, loving relationship to a plant in its natural setting, is far superior to buying it in a dried impersonal form from a store. It is similar to the difference between getting a letter from someone and seeing them in person! The environment in which a particular plant grows is instrumental in the understanding of its personality and its healing character. Does it lie discretely in the arm of a river bank beneath the protective overhanging branches of a larger species? Does it survive in the dry, rocky, windswept crevices of a high elevation? What do these characteristics reveal about the plant's personality and its healing gift? It is only through developing a personal relationship with herbs and flowers that we can open to the deeper lessons they offer.

Chinese herbs have traditionally been considered the most potent and effective healers, simply because their healing gifts have been understood and revered by the Chinese people for thousands of years. It is through the attention of the Chinese people that their herbs have evolved into the potent agents of healing they have come to be. Western herbs will attain the same status to the degree that we begin to interact with them in an interested, loving, and respectful manner.

Our Western herbs, for the most part, have not attained their exalted state...for to do so requires our participation with them. Their quiescence is due to lack of positive attention, just as one's mate may become unresponsive when neglected and unappreciated, or a musical instrument out of tune when left to gather dust in a closet. Flowers are here as co-creative agents of healing and spiritual expansion, and they await our participation in the process.

Mt. Shasta is home to many incredible healing flowers and herbs with distinct and wondrous personalities. They will become our best friends and teachers if we will but take the time to get to know and appreciate them. Where the development of discernment is concerned, we have help available from the following Shasta flowers and herbs:

COMFREY, a very plentiful Shasta plant, enjoys moist, sunny meadows abundant with bumblebees and electric blue dragonflies. It stands tall and erect, but its flowers relax gently in the direction of the earth. It withers quickly with insufficient water. When taken as a flower essence, Comfrey helps release tension stored in the nervous system and the subconscious mind. A healthy nervous system is very important to meditation practice because it enables a person to relax. The development of a calm receptive presence is what discernment requires of us, and it is easy to recognize how Comfrey's personality speaks of its gift as a nervous system tonic. Does not our own spine require erect flexibility to be healthy? Does not our nervous system need sufficient water to operate effectively?

Many animals suffer from nervous disorders and can be greatly helped by Comfrey essence. Comfrey is wonderfully helpful for animals suffering the effects of accident or shock.

FORGET-ME-NOT, which grows plentifully in lush meadows and along stream banks, assists in the release of negative thought patterns. Taken as an essence, it increases memory and the ability to learn from experience. It integrates the crown chakra and the conscious mind during meditation. The color of the flower is related to the pineal gland and the name suggests its association with memory. The ability to learn from the past is an important ingredient in developing discernment in present circumstances.

For Animals...
Forget-Me-Not is a wonderful essence for animals who as a result of abuse or neglect feel cut off from their source of nourishment. Forget-Me-Not restores the animal to a grace fill state in which they can once again derive their nourishment from the Supreme Source of all nourishment. Forget-Me-Not is wonderful for new-born animals and animals at the threshold of death. It helps them remember their celestial origins and makes all kinds of transitions easier. Forget-Me Not is found in the Anaflora Transition Formula.

RED CLOVER, a common Mt. Shasta resident herb, is useful in quieting the mind and emotions. It is especially good for individuals who get emotionally caught up in world events and disasters. It helps them to understand what lies behind these events. Many human beings are still heavily influenced by mass consciousness, and Red Clover can assist in disconnecting from negative human thought forms and re-connecting with our true nature, which is God. The ability to disconnect from mass consciousness is an important step in the development of discernment, for as long as we are swayed constantly by outer manifestation, we will be incapable of fostering the calm inner presence that discernment requires of us. I consider Red Clover to be one of my best plant friends, and a great teacher.

For animals...
At Anaflora Red Clover is one of our most often used essences for animals and can be found in many of our formulas. Red Clover assists animals that are often swept away by fear and panic arising from the collective unconscious of animals in general and specific species of animals as well. Red Clover is a calming essence that addresses daily anxiety and deep level fear. It is also very useful when training an animal as it creates a calm centered inner and outer presence. For training, take Red Clover with your animal friend for best results.

SHASTA DAISY, assists in spiritualizing the intellect. When taken as an essence it facilitates the development of an un-scattered mind, and greatly enhances the power of intuition. It allows one to take in the entire scope of whatever is presenting itself, and facilitates holistic decision making. Its golden center surrounded by many spokes of white petals reminds one of the Tibetan Wheel Of Life with the golden God Presence at the center.

For animals...
Shasta Daisy is a wonderful essence for animals during obedience training and any time a calm steady presence is desirable. Shasta Daisy is among the essences in the Anaflora Good Dog Formula.

LILAC, a familiar spring arrival in Shasta, is of aid to the spinal column. It assists in correcting posture by restoring flexibility to the spine. This rejuvenates the nervous system and greatly enhances meditative attunement. As meditative attunement becomes more integrated into our daily lives, our capacity of discernment will grow almost unnoticed.

For animals...
Lilac is a wonderful essence for animals. It act as a nerve tonic and has proven useful in the treatment of epilepsy. If an animal is being treated with acupuncture Lilac essence will enhance the effects if given just before treatment.

MANZANITA is a very plentiful Mt. Shasta shrub. It’s essence brings emotional balance, and is especially helpful for those who have difficulty expressing their inner feelings. It promotes a calm, steady presence.

For animals...
Manzanita is very useful for wild animals that must be confined or restrained for treatment, recovery or relocation. It allows them to experience and process their emotional feelings while staying calm as well. Manzanita is very useful for captive wild birds and birds that have become traumatized by flying into windows or being captured by cats.

When exploring your relationship to healing herbs and flowers, keep ever conscious of the fragility of our beautiful, sacred landscape. Use your awakening powers of discernment to assist you in recognizing whether a particular plant species is plentiful enough to be harvested. And please, never pull a plant up by its roots. Seeds must be ample enough for next year's propagation. Remember that insects, animals, and nature spirits use the herbs and flowers, too!

I have found that as my attunement to the plants, trees and flowers of Shasta increases over time, and as my relationship with them becomes more intimate, I am able to simply sit among them to receive their healing gifts. Sometimes I am able to go beyond relationship, which implies duality and separateness, and simply merge with the plant. In this way I become the plant with all of its spiritual properties and healing attributes. Just as in Lemurian times, we need only visit our friends of field and forest to come away rejuvenated, peaceful, and at one with Earth and Universe. Within this quality of being, discernment is not an issue....it is an aspect of our natural state.

Lemuria was an ancient civilization which existed prior to and during the time of Atlantis. Physically, it is believed that Lemuria existed largely in the Southern Pacific, between North America and Asia/Australia. Lemuria is also sometimes referred to as Mu, or the Motherland (of Mu). At its peak of civilization, the Lemurian people were both highly evolved and very spiritual. While concrete physical evidence of this ancient continent may be difficult to find, many people "know" that they have a strong connection to Lemuria.
