'Star Trek' Cast: Where Are They Now?
The original '60s 'Star Trek' was a series ahead of its time. Breaking racial barriers and social taboos, the show spawned a franchise that has become almost as vast as space itself and has fans the world over, some 40 years after the initial incarnation went off the air.

We check in with Spock, Sulu, Data, Picard, Seven of Nine and the rest of the 'Star Trek' crews to see if they've live long and prospered. Find out where the 'Trek' actors are today. -- Kristina Lopez

William Shatner
James T. Kirk ('Star Trek')

Then: The classically trained Shakespearian actor Shatner embodied the role of Captain James T. Kirk. Intelligent, loyal and brave, Kirk was the epitome of a leader and officer who devoted his life to his greatest love, the USS Enterprise. Getting to make out with hot alien babes was just icing on the cake.

William Shatner
James T. Kirk ('Star Trek')

Now: After an acting dry spell in the '70s, Shatner escaped his 'Trek' typecasting, first on his series 'T.J. ****,' and then as the irreverent Denny Crane on 'The Practice' and 'Boston Legal' -- for which he's won two Emmys and a Golden Globe. Shatner has also had a long stint as the "Priceline Negotiator" for Priceline.com. About the controversy surrounding his absence from the J.J. Abrams-helmed 'Star Trek' revamp, Shatner recently told Wizard magazine, "I just regret that I'm not a part of it. But if it's successful, then maybe there will be a call." Chris Pine will be taking over the reins for the new film.

Leonard Nimoy
Mr. Spock ('Star Trek')

Then: Nimoy had been acting for 15 years before landing his role as the half-human, half-Vulcan Spock. He skillfully portrayed the inner turmoil Spock faced when his human emotions clashed with his Vulcan philosophies. Nimoy earned several Emmy nods for his work on 'Trek.'

Leonard Nimoy
Mr. Spock ('Star Trek')

Now: Nimoy's had an intriguing career both in front of and behind the camera. He sat in the director's chair for 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' and 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.' He went on to direct 'Three Men and a Baby,' penned two autobiographies -- 'I am Not Spock' and 'I am Spock' -- and has developed a side career as a gallery-shown and published photographer. Nimoy is set to play the elusive Dr. William Bell in the upcoming 'Fringe' finale, and he'll don the Vulcan ears once more when he reprises his role as an older Spock in the newest 'Star Trek' flick.

DeForest Kelley
Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy ('Star Trek')

Then: Kelley was worried about being typecast as a villain, so he sought out different roles, which led him to work with future 'Star Trek' creator Gene Roddenberry. As TV's original Dr. Bones -- no offense Dr. Brennan -- he served as an emotional foil to Spock's logic and was often a counterpoint reference for Kirk. With a slight Southern twang, the crabby doc often deadpanned classic lines such as, "I'm a doctor not a mechanic" and "He's dead, Jim." You can see his classic "I'm a doctor" lines here.

DeForest Kelley
Leonard H. "Bones" McCoy ('Star Trek')

Now: After the cancellation of the series, Kelley had trouble getting work and only scored a handful of bit parts, on TV shows like 'Ironside' and 'Police Story.' He then reprised his role as McCoy in the 'Star Trek' animated series and six 'Star Trek' features. Kelley also appeared in the pilot for 'Star Trek: The Next Generation,' where we learned that Dr. McCoy had been promoted to Admiral. Sadly, Kelley passed away on June 11, 1999, from stomach cancer.

James Doohan
Montgomery "Scotty" Scott ('Star Trek')

Then: With a flair for foreign accents, Vancouver born Doohan chose a Scottish brogue for Montgomery Scott because of his firm belief that the Scots made the best engineers and not because of the character's last name. Scotty was a miracle worker, often saving the crew of the USS Enterprise just in the nick of time because of his great technical skills.

James Doohan
Montgomery "Scotty" Scott ('Star Trek')

Now: Doohan suffered the same fate of some fellow 'Star Trek' castmates -- he was only able to score a few bit parts in shows such as 'Magnum P.I.,' 'MacGyver' and in the TV movie 'Knight Rider 2000,' parodying himself. After welcoming his seventh child at the age of 80, Doohan passed away on July 25, 2005.

Nichelle Nichols
Nyota Uhura ('Star Trek')

Then: Nichols was a singer before she was cast as Communications Officer Nyota Uhura, a groundbreaking role in television during the civil rights era. The show sparked controversy when Uhura shared an interracial kiss with Captain Kirk while both under the influence of alien mind control. Many stars, including 'Star Trek' alum Whoopi Goldberg, site Nichols' role as an inspiration.

Nichelle Nichols
Nyota Uhura ('Star Trek')

Now: After the show Nichols volunteered with NASA to help it recruit minorities. In 1994 she penned an autobiography, 'Beyond Uhura, Star Trek and Other Memories.' Nichols has also voiced herself in several episodes of 'Futurama,' including one where she is reunited with her 'Star Trek' castmates. She's done voice work for several other cartoon series including 'Spider-Man,' 'Gargoyles' and 'Batman.' Recently, Nichols had a brief stint on season 2 of 'Heroes,' as Micah's grand aunt, and appeared in the film 'Are We There Yet?'

George Takei
Hikaru Sulu ('Star Trek')

Then: Before serving as the Helmsman of the USS Enterprise, Takei acted alongside Cary Grant in 'Walk, Don't Run' and shot 'The Green Berets' with John Wayne during 'Star Trek''s second season. Sulu later shared the tactical officer function alongside Pavel Chekov.

George Takei
Hikaru Sulu ('Star Trek')

Now: Since 'Star Trek' Takei has had a steady career with guest spots on shows like 'Hawaii Five-O,' 'Miami Vice' and 'Malcolm in the Middle.' Like Nichols he's appeared on 'Heroes,' in the prominent role of Kaito Nakamura, father of Hiro. Takei has also been an announcer for 'The Howard Stern Show' since 2006 and participated in the eighth season of the British reality show 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here!' In 2008, he married his longtime boyfriend, Brad Altman, in Los Angeles.

Walter Koenig
Pavel Andreievich Chekov ('Star Trek')

Then: Koenig believes the character of Chekov was added in response to the popularity of the Monkees' Davy Jones. He was asked to ham up the Russian accent by creator Gene Roddenberry to provide comedic relief. Fresh out of the Starfleet Academy, Chekov rotated as a junior officer before he was eventually promoted to Navigator and developed a friendship with Sulu.

Walter Koenig
Pavel Andreievich Chekov ('Star Trek')

Now: Koenig has had a few roles since his days as an officer. He played Alfred Bester, a Psi Cop on the series 'Babylon 5,' and had guest stints on shows like 'Diagnosis Murder' and 'Son of the Beach.' He, like many of the original 'Star Trek' alums, has penned several books on his experiences, including his autobiography, 'Warped Factors: A Neurotic's Guide to the Universe.' Koenig served as the best man in Takei's wedding.
