Here's a lesson for you all:

Op-Ed Columnist
The Obama Haters’ Silent Enablers

By FRANK RICH
Published: June 13, 2009

WHEN a Fox News anchor, reacting to his own network’s surging e-mail traffic, warns urgently on-camera of a rise in hate-filled, “amped up” Americans who are “taking the extra step and getting the gun out,” maybe we should listen. He has better sources in that underground than most.

The anchor was Shepard Smith, speaking after Wednesday’s mayhem at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. Unlike the bloviators at his network and elsewhere on cable, Smith is famous for his highly caffeinated news-reading, not any political agenda. But very occasionally — notably during Hurricane Katrina — he hits the Howard Beale mad-as-hell wall. Joining those at Fox who routinely disregard the network’s “We report, you decide” mantra, he both reported and decided, loudly.

What he reported was this: his e-mail from viewers had “become more and more frightening” in recent months, dating back to the election season. From Wednesday alone, he “could read a hundred” messages spewing “hate that’s not based in fact,” much of it about Barack Obama and some of it sharing the museum gunman’s canard that the president was not a naturally born citizen. These are Americans “out there in a scary place,” Smith said.

Then he brought up another recent gunman: “If you’re one who believes that abortion is murder, at what point do you go out and kill someone who’s performing abortions?” An answer, he said, was provided by Dr. George Tiller’s killer. He went on: “If you are one who believes these sorts of things about the president of the United States ...” He left the rest of that chilling sentence unsaid.

These are extraordinary words to hear on Fox. The network’s highest-rated star, Bill O’Reilly, had assailed Tiller, calling him “Tiller the baby killer” and likening him to the Nazis, on 29 of his shows before the doctor was murdered at his church in Kansas. O’Reilly was unrepentant, stating that only “pro-abortion zealots and Fox News haters” would link him to the crime. But now another Fox star, while stopping short of blaming O’Reilly, was breaching his network’s brand of political correctness: he tied the far-right loners who had gotten their guns out in Wichita and Washington to the mounting fury of Obama haters.

What is this fury about? In his scant 145 days in office, the new president has not remotely matched the Bush record in deficit creation. Nor has he repealed the right to bear arms or exacerbated the wars he inherited. He has tried more than his predecessor ever did to reach across the aisle. But none of that seems to matter. A sizable minority of Americans is irrationally fearful of the fast-moving generational, cultural and racial turnover Obama embodies — indeed, of the 21st century itself. That minority is now getting angrier in inverse relationship to his popularity with the vast majority of the country. Change can be frightening and traumatic, especially if it’s not change you can believe in.

We don’t know whether the tiny subset of domestic terrorists in this crowd is egged on by political or media demagogues — though we do tend to assume that foreign jihadists respond like Pavlov’s dogs to the words of their most fanatical leaders and polemicists. But well before the latest murderers struck — well before another “antigovernment” Obama hater went on a cop-killing rampage in Pittsburgh in April — there have been indications that this rage could spiral out of control.

This was evident during the campaign, when hotheads greeted Obama’s name with “Treason!” and “Terrorist!” at G.O.P. rallies. At first the McCain-Palin campaign fed the anger with accusations that Obama was “palling around with terrorists.” But later John McCain thought better of it and defended his opponent’s honor to a town-hall participant who vented her fears of the Democrats’ “Arab” candidate. Although two neo-Nazi skinheads were arrested in an assassination plot against Obama two weeks before Election Day, the fever broke after McCain exercised leadership.

That honeymoon, if it was one, is over. Conservatives have legitimate ideological beefs with Obama, rightly expressed in sharp language. But the invective in some quarters has unmistakably amped up. The writer Camille Paglia, a political independent and confessed talk-radio fan, detected a shift toward paranoia in the air waves by mid-May. When “the tone darkens toward a rhetoric of purgation and annihilation,” she observed in Salon, “there is reason for alarm.” She cited a “joke” repeated by a Rush Limbaugh fill-in host, a talk-radio jock from Dallas of all places, about how “any U.S. soldier” who found himself with only two bullets in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden would use both shots to assassinate Pelosi and then strangle Reid and bin Laden.

This homicide-saturated vituperation is endemic among mini-Limbaughs. Glenn Beck has dipped into O’Reilly’s Holocaust analogies to liken Obama’s policy on stem-cell research to the eugenics that led to “the final solution” and the quest for “a master race.” After James von Brunn’s rampage at the Holocaust museum, Beck rushed onto Fox News to describe the Obama-hating killer as a “lone gunman nutjob.” Yet in the same show Beck also said von Brunn was a symptom that “the pot in America is boiling,” as if Beck himself were not the boiling pot cheering the kettle on.

But hyperbole from the usual suspects in the entertainment arena of TV and radio is not the whole story. What’s startling is the spillover of this poison into the conservative political establishment. Saul Anuzis, a former Michigan G.O.P. chairman who ran for the party’s national chairmanship this year, seriously suggested in April that Republicans should stop calling Obama a socialist because “it no longer has the negative connotation it had 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago.” Anuzis pushed “fascism” instead, because “everybody still thinks that’s a bad thing.” He didn’t seem to grasp that “fascism” is nonsensical as a description of the Obama administration or that there might be a risk in slurring a president with a word that most find “bad” because it evokes a mass-murderer like Hitler.

The Anuzis “fascism” solution to the Obama problem has caught fire. The president’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court and his speech in Cairo have only exacerbated the ugliness. The venomous personal attacks on Sotomayor have little to do with the 3,000-plus cases she’s adjudicated in nearly 17 years on the bench or her thoughts about the judgment of “a wise Latina woman.” She has been tarred as a member of “the Latino KKK” (by the former Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo), as well as a racist and a David Duke (by Limbaugh), and portrayed, in a bizarre two-for-one ethnic caricature, as a slant-eyed Asian on the cover of National Review. Uniting all these insults is an aggrieved note of white victimization only a shade less explicit than that in von Brunn’s white supremacist screeds.

Obama’s Cairo address, meanwhile, prompted over-the-top accusations reminiscent of those campaign rally cries of “Treason!” It was a prominent former Reagan defense official, Frank Gaffney, not some fringe crackpot, who accused Obama in The Washington Times of engaging “in the most consequential bait-and-switch since Adolf Hitler duped Neville Chamberlain.” He claimed that the president — a lifelong Christian — “may still be” a Muslim and is aligned with “the dangerous global movement known as the Muslim Brotherhood.” Gaffney linked Obama by innuendo with Islamic “charities” that “have been convicted of providing material support for terrorism.”

If this isn’t a handy rationalization for another lone nutjob to take the law into his own hands against a supposed terrorism supporter, what is? Any such nutjob can easily grab a weapon. Gun enthusiasts have been on a shopping spree since the election, with some areas of our country reporting percentage sales increases in the mid-to-high double digits, recession be damned.

The question, Shepard Smith said on Fox last week, is “if there is really a way to put a hold on” those who might run amok. We’re not about to repeal the First or Second Amendments. Hard-core haters resolutely dismiss any “mainstream media” debunking of their conspiracy theories. The only voices that might penetrate their alternative reality — I emphasize might — belong to conservative leaders with the guts and clout to step up as McCain did last fall. Where are they? The genteel public debate in right-leaning intellectual circles about the conservative movement’s future will be buried by history if these insistent alarms are met with silence.

It’s typical of this dereliction of responsibility that when the Department of Homeland Security released a plausible (and, tragically, prescient) report about far-right domestic terrorism two months ago, the conservative response was to trash it as “the height of insult,” in the words of the G.O.P. chairman Michael Steele. But as Smith also said last week, Homeland Security was “warning us for a reason.”

No matter. Last week it was business as usual, as Republican leaders nattered ad infinitum over the juvenile rivalry of Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich at the party’s big Washington fund-raiser. Few if any mentioned, let alone questioned, the ominous script delivered by the actor Jon Voight with the G.O.P. imprimatur at that same event. Voight’s devout wish was to “bring an end to this false prophet Obama.”

This kind of rhetoric, with its pseudo-Scriptural call to action, is toxic. It is getting louder each day of the Obama presidency. No one, not even Fox News viewers, can say they weren’t warned.

Who knows?  Some of the material you Obama haters are passing on might just be inspiring someone's next shooting spree right now.

There is a pissed off segment of conservative America right now, but they will just have to learn to deal with it.  Just like ordinary Americans had to deal with it when Bush stole two consecutive elections.   Smiley

Hi Pisces
I was thinking all day yesterday about the very thing you posted about.  The majority of Americans voted President Obama into office, but the few who didn't seem to be escalating their hate for him like a whirling dervish - they're working themselves up into a mad frenzy and you're right.  Someone will go over the edge and go on a killing spree.  Threads like this one encourage the hatred.  This thread is not about trying to show the truth.  It's about spreading gossip that will incite hatred.  I watched the campaign all last fall.  I didn't even like politics until I started watching the election campaign.  What I noticed was how President Obama did not personally insult any of his rivals, he was polite, he was couteous, and contrary to Bianca's belief and numerous others, he did NOT play the race  card as they put it.  I never saw once where he said "vote for me because it's time a black man was president" or anything even close to such a thing.  When they had that "humor night" in the restaurant and John McCain basically roasted Barack, his comeback was funny just like it was supposed to be.  Since McCains people had been calling him the Messiah, he made a joke about it.  So now, because of that this messiah thing is being used against him.  It was McCain that started that, so get over it.
That bit about the handshake?  Bullcrap.  I don't even see any difference in the article, nevermind some secret way of shaking hands that President Obama is supposedly doing.  I find a lot of people have a very weak handshake, and they have a slack thum, others have a strong grip and the thumb is more firm.  Big deal.  What a pathetic thing to make an issue about.

Harconen - people that want change aren't WAITING for it.  The people who want change have made a move toward change by voting in the president they felt would give them the change.  The people who want change are trying to help make that change happen.

You claim you lived under a dictator.  Where do you live now?  Do you live in America?  If so, did you vote and enjoy the freedom a democratic society has given it's citizens?  Or do you think that the right to vote is not a freedom?  You'd perhaps like to live again under a dictatoship.  You are showing a lot of hate and yet you've not answered my questions in this thread, about who you would preferred to be President and what you think that person would do that would make the changes the people want. None of you Obama haters have answered that question.  So I think this hate is just for hate's sake.  Some of you have said it isn't racial.  I think it's pretty obvious that it is.

Horus - what you say would be true if these people were only having a say against the policies of President Obama's political party and what their platform is, and how he's carrying out the mandates of the party.  But that's not what I see here.  I see him being personally attacked.  Those caricatures Harconen is posting are absolutely vile and he knows it.  That's why he's doing it.

I did some more thinking this morning and I got to wondering about the American people.  You have a democratic government, you have the freedoms all men desire, you voted your president in with an overwhelming majority by following those democratic guidelines and exercising your FREEDOM and so - the majority said they wanted Barack Obama as their president.

There are people like Bianca who I feel is so disappointed with the fact that her candidate didn't get in, that she will take snide pot shots at her president.  There are people like Volitzer who are always against the "establishment" no matter who or what it is.  There are people like HFN who wish things were different but don't know just what "different" entails in the long run.

Then there are people like Harconen who surf the web looking for innocents like the above mentioned who are disappointed or somewhat angry even, who in MY opinion are the ones who seed the anger until it becomes hatred with the type of posts he's been putting up eg. the "secret handshake", the caricatures of your president and saying he's lived under a dictatorship, but obviously does not appreciate that he has the freedoms men desire, under the demorcratic society he's now living in.  Bianca herself seems to have an inkling of what's happening here, as she is asking why certain people don't post in other threads.  She knows that us long timers do post in other threads so she IS understanding that something is different here.  So to counteract that, Harconen has posted in another thread, altho it's still the same old same old, and he has tossed Bianca's statement back out there by actually saying "I hope you didn't join just to post in this thread" to a new member Bryan.  Reverse psycology.

I am saying that I do not care for Harconen's posts, and that is my privilege.  We do have freedom of speech still, and I can voice my opinon of his posts, the same as he is free to post his opinion of his president.

I think it is people like Harconen who incite people on purpose FOR this NWO.  I THINK that for once, the American people have spoken up and said they want change and they want Barack Obama to lead them in that change.  Yet look at the vile anti-Obama crap that's coming out.  Not anti democratic party, not anti-policy, but anti Obama.  Now why do you think that is?  The American people voted in that party, they knew who the leader was of that party, and they voted him in.  So why NOW, is he being reviled?  No one spoke up against Bush in this manner.  The only ones who spoke out against Bush and in a very mild form - and THEY WERE RIGHT was the Dixie Chicks and they were shunned because of it.  Who's sorry now?  Not only did you NOT use your hard won freedom of speech to question what Bush was doing, you flippin well put him back in again for a second time so he could completely devastate your country.  The man should be charged with treason.

Now someone comes along, namely Barack Obama and he understands that things have to change but gee, the NWO can't have that now can it?  They'd lose control.  So we get the hate mongerers like Harconen, constantly stirring the pot.  I guess maybe he liked living in a dictatorship since he seems to be trying to get the American people to overthrow their own government and kill democracy.  When the government is overthrown, the army takes over, then the top general of the army becomes the leader.  Then you have a dictatorship.  At the very least, you get people to come together in a crowd and start riling them up, the crowd thinks with the mind of a child.  They can then be led like sheep.  So - if you want to topply your government, if you want to live under a dictatorship, keep it up.  Keep knocking your democratic freedoms until you don't have them any more.

I would take this as politely telling the American people they need to be better educated.  if you can out smart those who are against you, you won't have to out-fight them.  President Obama said that repeatedly in his campaign.  America must improve its education.

My daughter was speaking with an American the other day, and that person told her that only about 20% of Americans have an education beyond high school.  That's scary.  If that's the case, then no wonder y'all are paranoid about a NWO.  I think you're all afraid of your president BECAUSE he's educated.  He KNOWS what to do for the country and the NWOers are afraid of him.

I am in that 20% that did exceed just high school. Life experience is far more educational.
As for being scared of Obama? We're more scared for those who support him and all government.

I did do the homework and what you are describing is a separate program -- it is not the same thing!  "National security objectives" are not going to be handled by volunteer doctors and engineers!  But my apologies "defense" was not Obama's word -"security" is.

And do you know why it is a separate program from the one you were talking about, Horus?

THERE IS NO CIVILIAN DEFENSE FORCE PROGRAM FROM OBAMA!

Don't you think if it were that the press would have covered the passage of such a thing?  How about the Republicans using it against him politically?

The public service bill is the closest you an find to what you are talking about,  and it says NOTHING about a civilian army.

Here is the bill:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:H.R.1388:

This second page is a summary:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:HR01388:@@@L&summ2=m&

Finally, we are about fifty years too late to stop EIsenhower's military industrial complex.  What he was talking about was the defense industry, which got us into Vietnam, extended the Cold War and still has a bloated, over-inflated budget, more than ALL the militaries of the industrial world (even more than China).

He was NOT talking about a civilian defense force of doctors, engineers and attornies, as described by Obama.  There is no such proposal in the works, it is all rhetoric created by a fearfuil right wing, who has taken to making crap up about him on a daily basis to get people's ire up.  As has been mentioned, that kind of fear-mongering rhetorci is what is starting all this anti-government violence around the country lately.  The rhetotric is mean-spirited, false and hateful and it has to stop.

That is about the articulate thing that anyone has said in this thread, Qoais, and you sure summed it up better than I could have.

Granted no one is happy with the way things are right now, but you have to be careful as to who you listen to and what you place your faith in.  The best way to bring about change is to have change from within, not without.  FDR wasn't initially for all the things he passed when he passed them either, he had a saying to the people who put him in office, "make me."

And Obama also said on the campaign trail, "change happens from the bottom up."  Unless people are around to influence their government by learning the issues, voting the people you best think represents you in office and statying involved in government even AFTER the campaign, change is not going to happen in any big way.

No Horus, I didn't mean that the term "National Security Force" means education.  I was trying to say it meant (to me anyway) solidarity through education.

Let me see if I can express what I've been thinking.  When your country had the draft, and the young men were required to serve for 2 years, all the young men in your country were then put through the same training.  Even when they finished their 2 years, they had been equally trained as each other - so IF a national security threat were to happen, your whole nation - as one - could rise up against it because they were ALL prepared and trained already and could work as a unit to defend against whatever was coming.  Now while those young men (and women as well) were doing their two years of service, they were also getting their education.  So again - your nation was better educated back then.  Everyone was on the same page so to speak.  Then you did away with the obligatory service to your country, and over the course of time, what has developed?  Those that do sign up to serve are treated like sh!t when they get home, there's no hospitals for the wounded, there's no counselling for the horrors they encountered, so what incentive is there for anyone to defend the land of the free anymore?  There are a lot of people I'm sure who sign up because they DO love their country, but a lot sign up because they're poor and can't afford a higher education, or they have no skills to earn a living and to their merit, they join up instead of turning to dealing drugs.  Prisoners who are in jail for committing crimes against society, get treated better than your warriors.  Hello?  Anyone home?

Maybe it is time afterall, for your country to become a dictatorship, since you're all so accustomed to being led around by the nose.  It's no different here in Canada.  As long as no one rocks the boat, the government can steal us blind and we don't make waves.  We don't make them accountable for the crimes against their own country and its people.

HFN thinks like the hippies back in the 60's and 70's thinking that there is no need for government.  The nature of the human beast is that it DOES need governing - most people are not leaders, they're followers, and NEED to be shown what works the best.  Once they're shown it's best, they'll fight to keep it.  So far, you've managed to keep your democracy.  What happens when you decide that's not what you really want? What is it that you DO want and are you willing to go the distance to get it?  Are you willing to work together for what works the best, are you willing to get a higher education so you're on an equal playing field with the rest of the world?  Have you any idea how many hours students in China attend school?  I've met so many of them that come to BC to go to University and they can't believe that they get weekends off.  They don't know what to do with all that free time, so they study.  What about Japan?  Not saying they're planning on fighting any wars, but they're certainly making sure their people get an education.

As for worrying about whether or not their will be a youth group like the Nazi's had - that is up to the people as well.  You got rid of the draft because you didn't want to have to serve so if you don't like this type of group, get rid of it.  I can see where a lot of your young people who are dissolutioned with life would join such a group.  It would make them feel like they're really somebody, part of a unit.  Peer pressure is a real stressload for young people.  If they don't fit in one way, they'll find another way.  So if you want your youth to inherit the land of the free and the home of the brave, you'll have to make sure they understand the values that make it so.  Education.

Edited to say:  the picture is of a Japanese school bus.
