                                                 LOST GLOBE JUST MISPLACED

A guy vacationing in Naples has stumbled across one of the most desperately sought pieces of ancient scholarship, long thought lost forever when the great Library of Alexandria Egypt was destroyed around 400 AD.

Apparently, it had been right in front of millions of tourists for decades.

A statue of Atlas carrying the Universe on his shoulders turns out to have used the lost celestial globe of Hipparchus, the Greek astronomer who first discovered the precession of Earth’s axis, observed a nova, precisely calculated the length of the year, and invented the stellar brightness scale used today.

And he also made this newly-rediscovered, amazingly accurate star map, complete with celestial equator, ecliptic, and Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

The Site

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is located on a magnificent site in the Eastern Harbor(Lat: 31.2086 Long: 29.909 Or Lat: 31° 12' 30.96" Long: 29° 54' 32.40"), facing the sea on the north, and Alexandria University Complex on its southern side. It overlooks the Silsilah Peninsula. It is very close to the location of the Ancient Library in the Brucheion (the Ancient Royal Quarter), as verified by the 1993 archeological survey.

I think so too, Q.  There were times that the beauty of this new library brought tears to my eyes.

I hope the souls of those that toiled there in antiquity somehow are witnessing this and rejoice with

us!!

Wouldn't they get a shock tho!!!! Shocked  BUT - I'd be afraid to build it so close to the water myself.

Well, I think the priests at the temple of Sais, would approve, (don’t you agree Q-ais?)  They are the ones that conversed with Solon, (Plato’s grandfather), who is mentioned in the infamous dialogues of Timaeus and Critias.  All the things they held to be true about the region are still so today.  It is a dry climate and paper will preserve well there still.  It is not prone to sudden inundations.  And in times of periodical conflagration, (I’m not sure just when that occurs), the Nile may still be a saving grace. They preserved the most ancient records known to them and this they owed to the perfect location for a library there in Egypt.  However, although they were correct about the destructive forces of nature they over looked the most destructive force of all, man. The new library is quite beautiful, but I question the wisdom of placing it in an area so prone to war and violence.  Such an accumulation of knowledge is worth more than gold or jewels.  Wouldn’t it be more safely kept in Antarctica?  Or perhaps we should do what the Atlanteans did, and bury our wealth of knowledge under a man made mountain of rock shaped like a pyramid, where only a technologically advanced civilization worthy of that knowledge could gain access to it.  Smiley
