                                                         Amuletic jewelled scarab





Artist: Egyptian

Location: British Museum

Date: circa 600 BC

Materials: gold, enamel

Dimensions: length: 2.8cm



Provenance:

Collection of Comtesse Behague;
French private collection



Description:

Jewel in the form of a scarab beetle.
Its back is decorated with cloisons in
a pattern of horizonal and vertical
stripes frilled with dark blue enamel.

The underside has a tube which was
used for attachment to a mummy.

Several years ago, underwater archaeologists excavating a
late Bronze Age shipwreck found a real golden scarab with
hieroglyphs indicating that it was owned at one time by
Egyptian Queen Nefertiti.
