Alien Abduction or Satanic Seduction
Is there any connection between the recent alien abduction phenomenon and the historical seduction of medieval nuns by devils? Do our present day alien rapists bear any resemblance to these devilish creatures? And is Satan really an alien? It is the opinion of a vast number of parapsychologists and neurophysiologists that the answers to these questions may be found through the study of a more naturalistic phenomenon known as sleep paralysis.
Sleep paralysis is a condition that occurs in the state just before a person falls to sleep (the hypnagogic state) or just before they fully awaken from sleep (the hypnopompic state). It's cause may be analogised to a faulty switch which enables and disables the body's motor functions. Normally, when a person goes to sleep, this switch disables most of the body's motor functions so that they don't act out their dreams, and re-enables these motor functions when the person wakes up. However, if there is a delay between the person waking up and their motor function's being enabled, this can lead to the person being temporarily unable to move or speak (sleep paralysis). This experience is often associated with sensations of a sexual nature and a feeling that there is some sort of presence in the room, which often arouses fear but is also accompanied by an inability to cry out.

Sceptics of the extraterrestrial hypothesis have proposed that many alien abductions are a product of these vague sensations experienced during sleep paralysis which our brain decides need fleshing out with more detail. Certainly if a person were to awaken in a state of sleep paralysis from a nightmare involving aliens, they may very likely attribute the experience to an alien encounter. With the recent explosion of movies, documentaries, TV shows and books about such malevolent alien encounters, it is easily understandable how such a scenario may arise (I have fell victim to such nightmares myself). In fact, the symptoms of sleep paralysis are very similar to the descriptions given by many alien abductees of what they remember experiencing, which tend to involve bedroom visitations from these mysterious creatures, the abductee awakening paralysed with a sense of dread, and the vague memory of strange beings or a presence in the room.

Psychologists have suggested that these alien abductions could be a modern example of a shared cultural delusion. A person can function completely normally while holding the most irrational beliefs imaginable, provided that their irrational beliefs are culturally accepted. Since the belief in aliens does not blatantly conflict with our current cultural and scientific world view, that intergalactic space travel is considered a real possibility, and that it is highly probable that we are not the only inhabited planet in the universe, consequently extra-terrestrials have become a popular starting point to explain away any strange and vague experiences (such as sleep paralysis) which would remain otherwise unexplained to the layman. This phenomenon seems to mirror society, in that it reflects our current interest in space exploration, the recent controversy over genetic manipulation, and the fear of nuclear warfare. Even the appearance of aliens show clear cultural dependencies - in North America large-headed grey aliens predominate, while in Britain the abducting aliens are mainly tall, blond and Nordic. While the world is becoming progressively unsatisfied by the teachings of religion, and looking more toward science for answers, the extra-terrestrial hypothesis is gaining popularity, since it does not necessitate any religious connotations, and is, at least superficially, consistent with our current scientific world view.

In contrast to today’s society, medieval culture was predominated by religious beliefs. We can laugh at the idea of medieval nuns being impregnated by devils, because it does not fit in with our own cultural prejudices and delusions; however, to a medieval nun experiencing sleep paralysis, it would seem natural to explain such an unusual experience as an encounter with a devil. If a nun were to awaken paralysed after a nightmare about devils, with a sense of dread and the vague memory of a presence in the room, she may well think that she had been seduced by a devil. Her medieval priest, like an abductee’s therapist, would tend to nurture and encourage this delusional belief, rather than challenging it.

Other shared cultural delusions which parallel the alien abduction phenomenon have been cited throughout history by sceptics. For example, in ancient Greece there were women who thought they’d had sex with animals, and there were stories of gods taking on the form of swans to seduce beautiful women. However, UFO enthusiasts have proposed the counter-argument that perhaps these “delusions” are really the primitive misinterpretation of alien abductions throughout history, and thus evidence of an historical alien presence on our planet. Admittedly, a medieval nun abducted by aliens would probably interpret her abductors as devils. This historical alien presence is further evidenced by comparisons between modern UFO sightings, medieval sightings of flying dragons and ancient Egyptian sightings of “eyes in the sky”. Furthermore, aliens have been compared to elves (little green men) and fairies (perhaps explaining the origin of the tooth fairy myth). God could also have been the primitive misinterpretation of extra-terrestrials visiting Earth, whose high technology would be perceived as miracle (maybe the three wise men followed a UFO). And if God is an alien, maybe Satan is too.
