3.3 The Pyramids of Paulina Zelitsky

In the summer of 2000, Paulina Zelitsky, a Russian-born oceanographic engineer together with her husband Paul Weinzweig, discovered a huge plateau with clear images of an urban development partly covered with sand while scanning the seafloor of Cuba looking for sunken treasures while employ by Cuban government. Satellite-integrated oceanfloor positioning systems, echo sounders and high precision side-scan double frequency sonar used by the couple detected figures resembling pyramids, roads and building. Reuters reported that the deep-sea city is located on a huge plateau lying at a depth of around 2,200 feet. High-resolution sonar images reveal limitless white sand plains and man-made large-size architectural designs (Reuters, 2001).(See Image 5)

Aboard the Cuban research ship Ulises, Zelitsky with a team of trained researchers discovered “extensive series of structures” over a several-mile wide area using sonar images. The site is close to the edge of the underwater geological feature known as Cuban Shelf, which falls off sharply in a series of shelves going down to several thousand meters. It is at one of these shelves around 600-700 meters deep that these structures were found within the vicinity of an extinct volcano, a geological fault and a riverbed.

According to Paul Weinzweig, the sonar imagery shows pyramids, roads and buildings that look like those found in the Yucatan Peninsula and further points out that they resemble like an urban development. Apart from the actual shapes, there are similarities according to American geologists and pointed out that the dark shadings in the image suggest metal roofing.(See Image 6)

Could this discovery of Paulina Zelitsky give us hint as to where the legendary island once existed?

In Gateway to Atlantis, Collins concluded that the most likely location of Plato's sunken empire was Cuba . He pointed out that Plato's description of Atlantis was derived from stories and rumors reaching the ancient world via Phoenician and Carthaginian seafarers crossing the Atlantic Ocean . Furthermore, he proposes that the mechanism behind the Atlantis destruction was a comet impact that devastated the eastern Atlantic coast of America sometime around 8,500 B.C. Fragments of this comet falling in the Western Atlantic basin just north of the Bahamas, created hundred-meters-high tidal waves drowning large part of the Bahamas and the Caribbean as well as low-lying regions of the eastern United States (Collins, 2000).

However, studies conducted by the authors from recent discoveries within the Bahama Banks and adjacent areas including the Eastern side of the Atlantic, strongly refute the conclusion of Collins about the location of Atlantis because his only basis for the claim was the belief that the land area of Cuba's great western plain matches Plato's description of Atlantis having a measurement of 3000 by 2000 stadia or approximately 552 kilometers by 368 kilometers.

If only 200-300 meters of water recede from the present sea level, an island bigger the size of Florida will rise from the Bahama Banks!!! We strongly believe that the structures found by Zelitsky are remnants of an Atlantean colony and it is expected that in the future there will be more underwater structures to be discovered on both sides of the Atlantic because of the state-of-the-art instruments now being employed makes the ocean floor look more transparent.

As early as 1950's, pilots of light aircraft reported seeing underwater “stonework” within Cuban waters. Similar sightings of “ submerged building complex” covering over 10 acres on the northern part of Cuba have persuaded Cuban government to explore and discovered a veritable underwater city. Unverified reports speculate that the “building complex” was explored with the assistance of Russian submarines based in Cuba during the 1960's. (See Image 7)
