BEIJING,

-- The Turfan Basin is a famous site on the ancient Silk Road in the far-western region of Xinjiang. Recently, archaeologists and local officials in charge of protecting cultural heritage have recovered ruins believed to be the worship sites of an early Chinese Christian group called Jingjiao.

In the Grape Valley of Turfan, experts gathered at the ruins 10 kilometers away from the Turfan City. The roofs of the sites are no longer standing, but walls remain intact. Experts estimate that it will take four and a half years to complete the archaeological mission.

Archaeologists discovered the ruins in the 1980s, but could not determine what they were due to lack of time and funding.

    Sound bite:

Zhang Yongbing, the director Turfan Institution of Cultural Relic In early 20th century, German archaeologists dug out a lot of relics and said they were written materials and frescos from the early Christians.

They also gave a name to this place -- Westside Jingjiao Ruins.

Archaeologists say this small hill could be the rare remains of the largely unknown early Christian cult.

Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Xinjiang.
