William of Puignaucler Jan. 1289
Gerald of Corbella Aug. 1289
Bernard of Barbará May 1291
Raymond Oliver Aug. 1292-April 1294
Berenguer of Montornés Dec. 1294-Jan. 1296
Peter of San Justo July 1296
Raymond Oliver June 1297-1307
1. As it is not known exactly when convents were founded, all commanders of places where convents were established are listed. For the commanders of Mas-Deu, see Léonard, Introduction, pp. 89-90.
2. He was commander of Huesca in 1265-6.
3. Uncastillo was included in the title given to some of the early commanders of Añesa: RAH, 12-6-1/M-83, doc. 27; AHN, cód 467, p. 404, docs. 505, 506.
4. He was apparently commander of Zaragoza at the same time.
5. He was commander of Corbins in 1290.
6. Gallart of Josa appears as commander in April 1271, although Arnold of Timor was named as commander in February. The latter is next mentioned as commander in May 1271, while the penultimate reference to Gallart of Josa as commander occurs in July 1270.
7. Although after 1244 the commanders of Valencia did not include Burriana in their title, they continued to exercise authority over Burriana for some years: see above, p. 95.
8. He was absent in the East in 1929: AGP, parch. Cervera, no. 484; see above, p. 406.
9. He was apparently commander of Monzón at the same time.
10. Peter of Tous is called commander in a document drawn up in 1288, but this must be a mistake, as he was commander of Miravet from 1286 to 1290: AGP, parch. Gardeny, no. 185.
11. There is obviously a mistake in the dating of the documents of the year 1176, but it is impossible now to dtermine where the error lies.
12. See above, p. 98.
13. From 1174 onwards the commanders of Huesca also had authority over the house of Luna, and some were called commanders of Huesca and of Luna; see, for example, AHN, cód. 499, p. 17, doc. 24; p. 18, doc. 31; p. 22, doc.44.
14. In compiling this list I have made use of the list of commanders given by M. Rotger y Capllonch, Historia de Pollensa, i (Palma de Mallorca, 1897-8), 44.
15. See above, p. 106, note 41.
16. He was commander of Gardeny from 1284 until 1286.
17. He was apparently commander of Gardeny at the same time.
18. In the early years at Novillas there was more than one 'master' at the same time.
19. The titles given to the various commanders are indicated by the initials given after the names.
20. See above, p. 100.
21. He was commander of Gardeny in 1178.
22. He also appears as commander of Tortosa in September 1245, but there is apparently an error in dating, for he was commander of Gardeny in August and October 1245.
23. He was also commander of Villel in 1255.
24. He was at this time also commander of Valencia.
25. In March and April 1202 he was also commander of Añesa.

Appendix IV

Seals

The seal of the provincial master

In 1224 the provincial master was using a round seal (25 mm. in diameter) of black or dark-green wax, depicting a lamb and bearing the legend: S. PVINCIE ET ARAGONIS.(1) According to a bull issued by Innocent IV in 1251 it was customary for successive provincial masters to use the same seal.(2) A change had been made, however, when the province of Provence and certain parts of Spain was divided into two. The master of Provence contined to use a seal depicting a lamb,(3) but the seal of the Aragonese master William of Cardoona, although round (29 mm. indiameter) and of black or dark-green wax, depicted a knight on horseback, carrying a lance and shield, on which was a cross; it bore the legend: S. MINISTRI TEMPLI 1 ARAGON 7 CATALON.(4) This form of seal was also used by later Aragonese provincial masters.(5)

Seals of convents and commanders
Alfambra 1248. Brown wax, round, 30 mm. in diameter, depicting a cross. Legend:......LUM CASTRI....(6)
Barbará Early fourteenth century. Yellow wax, round, 29 mm. in diameter, depicting a castle between two fishes. Legend: S. COMAND.....BARBERA.(7)
Gardeny Early fourteenth century. Yellow wax, round, 27 mm. in diameter, depicting a cross, with stars in two angles and shields with crosses in the other two. Legend: S. AR..........GARDENNI. This is the seal of Arnold of Banyuls.(Cool
Huesca Round, depicting a castle. Legend: S. DOM. TEMPLI DE OSCA.(9)
Miravet 1278, 1287. Depicting a lion.(10)
Monzón Early fourteenth century. Round, depicting a castle with three towers, with a griffin on each side. Legend: S. CASTELL........ONI.(11)
Tortosa Late thirteenth century. Depicting a cross. Legend: SIGILLUM MILICIE TEMPLI IN DERTOSA.(12)
