Great presentation, I have long admired Hiram Bingham, his story is one of the great adventure stories in archaeology.  Of course, if I am remembering correctly. lately it has been discovered that Machu Picchu was actually discovered by explorers a few years earlier so that dims his discoveries a bit!

Hi, Incan Queen!

"Of course, if I am remembering correctly. lately it has been discovered that Machu Picchu was
actually discovered by explorers a few years earlier so that dims his discoveries a bit!"

I wouldn't think this dims Bingham's accomplishments at all.

Just like all the previous "discoverers" of the Americas, if they kept their discoveries to themselves
and did not lead the rest of the world to them, what good was it?  Their discoveries died with them.....

So, let's give Hiram Bingham the full credit, as we do with Christopher Columbus.....

What I didn't know was that he really went to see it's "sister city", CHOQUEQUIRAO, and that's when
he heard about Machu Picchu and one of the natives led him to it.

What I find frustrating is that there are panoramic pictures galore - same with the main spots, like the
'hitching post to the sun', but very little or nothing of the actual living quarters, with accompanying
explanations, e.g. the 'chief's' living place, the kitchens, etc. etc.  After a while the panoramic shots
get pretty boring.  I was able to find just a very few that were a little different.

I am not done with this yet, Hiram Bingham's book is on line and there is nothing like hearing the facts
from the 'horse's mouth', is there?   But having copied here a couple of books (one typed), it is rather
tedious, so I'll have to take care of a few other things before I plunge into it.  Maybe I'll just do it by
installments, LOL, LOL!

Please feel free to add any information you like, Incan Queen.  Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hey Bianca!

I actually love the panoramic shots of Machu Picchu, to me it is one of the most spiritual places in the world.  I have done a lot on it in elswhere in the section.

I didn't know that Bingham's book was online.  If you want to post the link to it here, I'll copy the entire thing over here and save you some work!  I'd love reading it.

I still get the feeling that we don't have Machu Picchu's true purpose down, by the way!  They seem to think it was a retreat for the Incan rulers, last I heard.

That would have been great, Isis.

Darn it, if the Gutenberg projects doesn't it have it anymore.  I am so mad.....!!!

I searched and searched for other sites that had it, to no avail.......

If you should run into it, yourself, PLEASE just go ahead and copy it in this section, then I'll ask
the mods to put a stickie on it.
