Peru: Atahualpa's Ransom Room infrastructure is at risk

Cajamarca,
Nov. 12
(ANDINA).-

The Atahualpa's Ransom Room in Cajamarca has suffered serious deterioration due to fungi, humidity, rain, sun, and other harmful elements of the environment, local archaeologist Wilder León Azcurra announced Wednesday.
He explained that the monument built of volcanic stone urgently needs a comprehensive master plan for its restoration, preservation and maintenance.

"Unfortunately, the National Institute of Culture (INC) does not have the necessary resources for this project which requires about two million dollars."

"The situation is very complicated. The trachyte foundations are eroding and if someone does not intervene immediately, the Ransom Room is at serious risk," the archaeologist said as he noted that some institutions have shown interest in helping restore the monument, but so far there is nothing concrete.

León Azcurra added that the conservation works carried out in the past have helped to momentarily preserve part of the building.

The Ransom Room is the only feature of Inca architecture left in Cajamarca city. It was built of stone and with the walls slightly inclined to give the characteristic trapezoidal features of Inca constructions.

The Inca Atahualpa, who was kept prisoner in this room, offered Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro to have the room filled completely with silver twice and gold once as a ransom.

                                                             Cajamarca

The origin of this city dates back over 3,000 years.

Traces of pre-Chavín cultures can be seen in surrounding archaeological sites such as Cumbe Mayo
and Kuntur Wasi.

During the period between 1463 and 1471, Tupac Inca conquered the area and brought Cajamarca
into the Tawantinsuyu, or Inca Empire.  During this time it was ruled by Tupac's father, Pachacutec.

Cajamarca gained notoriety as the site where the last Inca emperor Atahualpa was murdered by the Conquistador Pizarro.

It is said that Atahualpa, after his capture, tried to ransom himself by offering the Conquistadors one room full of gold and two rooms full of silver.

After receiving the ransom, Pizarro charged Atahualpa with heresy and killed him dby strangulation.
