It is shown in the papyrus drawing below being held by the top of the loop as opposed to the bottom of the "T" bar. This is because it is not an implement for use in the hand, such as a sighting device, but a visual symbol.

The Ankh is held by human figures with the same body but different heads. The body is identical to show that it is always Orion. The heads are different to show Orion at various phases during precession, and to identify the position of Orion along the horizon behind a mountain ridge. The shape of this ridge is compared to animal shapes such as the head of a dog.

Astronomy from Giza

Spell 140 is the starting point for the astronomy. A specific astronomy event is used as an identifiable moment in time.
‘His eye rests in place upon His Majesty in this fourth hour of the night, on the last day of the second month of winter, and his majesty is happy knowing that he appears as on the first occasion.’
‘His Majesty’ is Orion, and ‘his eye’ - the celestial object that passes through the head of Orion - is the moon. The text indicates that:
the priests are waiting for this event, and
it has occurred previously.
The time constraints placed on the position of Orion means that the event is determined by precession and will repeat every 26000 years. How the priests knew the event had occurred previously, I don’t know. There are two options; the last event was witnessed, or it was possible to predict the motion from available knowledge. With computer software it is easy to pinpoint the nearest occurence of this event to our own time. It is four hours after sunset on the 30th January 2770 AD. However, it is the event that is important and not the date.

When a specific moment in the cycle is known the motion of the moon around the earth, and the earth around the sun, will follow a determinable path. With this knowledge a puzzle has been set.

In Spell 149 it states:
‘I am one who celebrates exactly every monthly festival and half festival.’
These are the new and full moon cycles respectively. The puzzle starts with the moon, in partial phase, directly above Orion like the minute hand of a clock. The clock then moves forward to the festival of the new moon (sacred eye). At this festival a number of deities are celebrated. It is not the nature of the gods that is important but their number. There are 21 deities and from the new moon we take the clock forward 21 days. This takes the reader through to 11th March 2770. On this date the moon rises from the horizon at 123 degrees azimuth. The next Spell confirms the basis of the puzzle by taking the clock from the next new moon to the shortest night of 2770. The following three Spells count forward from full moons and new moons to specific days where the sun or moon is at a position of 123 degrees azimuths, a position referred to as the holy gate on the horizon. The total time period covered by these Spells is about 2 years.

The bearing of 123 degrees is also given in the text but not in a way that is obvious. The reference is as follows:

‘I know that field of rushes which belongs to Re; the height of its barley is five cubits, its ear is two cubits and its stalk is three cubits. Its emmer is seven cubits, its ear is three cubits and its stalk is four cubits. They are spirits nine cubits tall who reap it in the Souls of the East.’
This can be read as,
‘I know the sacred place (Field of Rushes) from where the sun comes from. It is 50 and 7 degrees towards the East in the 90 degrees segment between South and East.’
The text does not give it as 57 but splits the numbers. It is done in such a way that the stalks and ears of each plant can be added together again making 5 and 7. There is a reason why the numbers are split. Whereas the first part of the astronomy deals with a bearing along the ground of 123 degrees azimuth (57 degrees from South towards the east) the second part of the astronomy puzzle starts with Orion at 12 degrees above the horizon (5+7=12).

The Mountain of Bakhu and The 'Buttocks'

Having found a bearing you need to know how far to look, along that route. Spell 149 clearly describes one mountain but then mentions:
‘the spirits who are in it are seven cubits from their buttocks.’
The latter is a mountain with the shape of an upturned set of buttocks that is on the 123 degrees bearing from Giza. It can be seen in the composite photograph below formed from the mountain ridge that runs the whole length of the photograph from middle left to top right.

Bakhu is described in Spell 108:
‘ it is in the east of the sky.’

‘as for that mountain of Bakhu on which the sky rests.’

and also in Spell 149:
‘The very high twin mountains.’

‘as for the very high mountain which is in the realm of the dead.’

Both Spell 108 and Spell 149 says, ‘it is 300 rods long.’

The realm of the dead is considered by Egyptologists to be in the West. It is where the sun goes down into the abyss and is rejuvenated each day to rise in the East. However it appears from the text that there is another realm of the dead. We are told that the mountain is in the realm of dead and also in the east of the sky. The realm is further defined in the text as follows. Osiris dies at Abydos, his corpse rests at Busiris and his heart is at Bakhu. This can be seen in the following:

In Spell 169 it talks of Osiris having to take his weapons so that he can kill his enemies when he is dead, and then of awakening in Abydos.

In Spell 78 ‘I come forth to Busiris that I may see Osiris (Orion), I land at the Mansion of the Great Dead One.’

In Spell 181 ‘Hail to you, Osiris . . . great of shape in Busiris.’

In Spell 17 ‘Who is he? He is Osiris. As for what exists, that means his injury. Otherwise said: That means his corpse. Otherwise said: It means eternity and everlasting.’

In Spell 189 ‘ ...shall I be with the confederates of Seth on the mountain of Bakhu? I will dwell with those noble dead in order to excavate the pool of Osiris and rub his heart.’
The relationship between Busiris and Abydos is highlighted in the Hym To Osiris where the reader is told to sail downstream to Busiris as a living soul and to fly back to Abydos as a heron (as the crow flies?).

As for the mountain on which the sky rests it has to be the highest mountain. Within the area of land formed between Abydos, Giza and the buttocks, the highest mountain is Gebel Umm Shaumur.

Gebel Umm Shaumur fulfils the image of a twin mountain because it is linked by a ridge to an almost identical mountain.
The ‘buttocks’ are 300 rods (15.7 km) from Gebel Umm Shaumur.

I mentioned that Abydos could be found between the extended 45-degrees and 39-degrees shafts of the map overlay. The bearing of the mound from Abydos is 42 degrees, half way between 39 and 45 degrees. This bearing is given in the text! In Spell 125 there are 42 gods in the Hall of Justice (the Island of the Just is at Abydos), and 42 Declarations of Innocence made before the gods of the tribunal.

The Site

The starting point from which to locate the mound is directly South of the two sections forming the buttocks. This point is referred to in Spell 149: ‘as the spirits who are in it are seven cubits from their buttocks1.’ This is a place, on the valley floor in the wadi, 7 degrees from each cheek, so to speak. In Spell 110 we are told that Horus, who is Lord of the Field of Offerings, which we are now in, is a thousand cubits long. If you travel directly West along the valley floor 1000 cubits (523 metres), you should now be at the mound shown in the composite photograph below (repeated from Page 1).

Anubis

As with other myths there is some basis in reality. Directly opposite the mound are two large triangular sections of rock face about 500 metres high. In between them is a low perpendicular ridge sloping down towards the mound. It is not Mount Rushmore but there is a what appears to be the outline of a dogs head (not shown here) - 'Anubis' who guards the cavern.

Other Features

To the right hand side of this head the mountain ridge has the shape of a large eyeball pointing upwards. This is the ‘eye of seven cubits with a pupil of three cubits’ identified in Spell 100. Again the measurement is conveniently made from the bottom of the wadi; the pupil is 3 degrees across, and the rest of the eye covers 7 degrees.

Astronomy at the Site

The astronomy puzzle is divided into two sections. The first provides a bearing to the buttocks; the second starts at Giza and the transfers to the site.

In Spell 169, Orion apparently dies and then reawakens. At this point the reader is told to offer 12 loaves on the altar of the Lady of the Two Lands. This relates to the inclination of Al-Nitak (the star represented by the Great Pyramid) when it is 12 degrees above the horizon from Giza.

The text describes how the event appears both at Giza, and the site, on the same day. Because we are now viewing the sky from a different position on the Earth and Al-Nitak is no longer at 12 degrees above the horizon. The Spells providing the last section of astronomy are 168, 171, 172, 174, 178, 179, and 181. Out of these 168 is probably the most important. This provides the number of degrees along the horizon travelled by the sun from transit at midday till when it sets. This is done in the form of offerings. 62 bowls are offered to Re and the sun travels 62 degrees along the horizon. There is other information within Spell 168 that uses the physical attributes of the mountain ridge south of the mound to pinpoint the entrance to the cavern.

Sighting Device

The ‘buttocks’ when viewed from the West, approaching from Giza, is the same shape as the hook like tool found in the shaft of the Queens Chamber.

This device had a handle so that when held the hook portion could be used as a sighting device. It is actually mentioned in Spell 149:
‘Who is this spirit who goes on his belly (Anubis – see vignettes) and whose tail is on his mountain (buttocks)? See, I have gone against you and your tail is in my hand (sighting device).’
Visiting the Site:

If you wish to see the site for yourself you will need to hire a four-wheel drive vehicle and a guide. The site is located near an Oasis called Ein Umm Saida, about 100 km by road and wadi from the resort of Naama Bay, Sharm El Sheikh. If you manage to negotiate the right route from the road you will know when you are near the end as you should be able to see the mountain shaped like a set of ‘buttocks’ clearly visible at the end of an open plain. You need to go to the left of the ‘buttocks’, and stop at a small cave, used by the Bedouin, on the left-hand side of the wadi. If you walk further west from this cave you will be directly South of, and between, the two peaks of the ‘buttocks’. Walking further west, at about 550 metres and rising from the valley floor should be the mound. The wadi bears slightly to the left and if you continue to walk you will pass the mound on your right. If you climb up the mountain ridge on your left-hand side you will be able to clearly see the mound. Good Hunting.
