'La Niña' sails again in Santa Cruz

By Cassandra Brooks
Santa Cruz Sentinel

A replica of the ship Christopher Columbus sailed has arrived at the Santa Cruz harbor and is open
to visitors.

The replica Niña, which Archaeology magazine has called the most historically accurate Columbus
ship ever built, sailed into Santa Cruz on Tuesday.

At first glance, the boat seems painfully small — only 66 feet long — and the structure is authentically bare-bones, right down to the wooden tiller the crew still uses to steer the boat.

Most people are shocked that Columbus and his crew sailed across the Atlantic in a ship so small, said Capt. Kyle Friauf. And they made the voyage three times under conditions that would seem unbearable to modern Americans.

In 1492, the ship was crowded with a 27-person crew and no one but the captain had private space.

"The crew lived, ate and slept on the deck," Friauf said.

And the deck is small and almost entirely exposed to the elements.

The cabin below the deck, where the all-volunteer crew now resides in bunks, was historically reserved for storing food, water and farm animals.

The replica Niña was built in 1992, for the 500 year anniversary of Columbus' sailing. Since then it has toured continually, visiting ports throughout the United States as a floating museum for the public and school groups.

The stop in Santa Cruz comes as the crew is sailing down the west coast from Canada to Panama, where their 2008 tour ends. Their next stop is Morro Bay.

"She's very seaworthy," said Friauf, who added that the crew has been out in 20 plus foot waves without any problem.

That's comforting given that their small wooden life boat is also a replica of the original, the crew said.

The Niña replica was built in the remote town of Valencia, Brazil, which is the only known location where 15th century methods of shipbuilding are still practiced. The eighth generation shipbuilders there constructed the vessel with their bare hands and basic tools, just as people would have hundreds of years ago.

The replica is made of Brazilian hardwood, which is characteristic of the Spanish Oak and pine masts that were originally used.

The ship is open for visitors every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 2 on the east side of Santa Cruz harbor on the fuel dock extension, 135 Fifth Ave. More information is available at

The Niña - Most Historically Accurate Columbus Ship Replica Ever Built

The Niña is a replica of the ship on which Columbus sailed across the Atlantic on his three voyages
of discovery to the new world beginning in 1492.

Columbus sailed the tiny ship over 25,000 miles.

That ship was last heard of in 1501, but the new Niña has a different mission.

We are a floating museum, and we visit ports all over the United States.

Replica 'Nina', 'Pinta' to sail into Waukegan

July 9, 2009
NEWS-SUN STAFF REPORT
WAUKEGAN

-- Replicas of two of Christopher Columbus' ships are scheduled to spend nearly a week at Waukegan Harbor beginning July 29.

The "Pinta" and the "Nina" will be docked next to the Waukegan Yacht Club until their departure early Aug. 3. They will be open for viewing for a charge.

The "Nina" was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools, and was called by Archaeology magazine "the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built." It was used in the production of the film "1492" starring Gerard Depardieu as Columbus and directed by Ridley Scott.

The "Pinta" was recently built in Brazil to accompany the "Nina". She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours and has a 900-square-foot main salon down below to view slide shows of the ships' construction. The Pinta is available for private parties while in port.

Both ships will be touring together as a new and enhanced "sailing museum" for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ships used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world.

While in port, the public is invited to visit the ships for walk-aboard self-guided tours. The prices are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for children. Children 4 and under are free. The ships will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No reservations necessary.

Teachers or groups wishing to schedule a 30-minute guided tour with a crew member should call the ship directly at (787) 672-2152. Minimum of 15 and the cost is $3 per person.

Pinta - Our Second Columbus Replica Ship

Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours and has a 40 ft air conditioned main cabin down below with seating. Visitors can watch a video on the building of the ship in Brazil. Pinta is available for private parties while in port.

Both The Niña and Pinta will be touring together as a new and enhanced ‘sailing museum’, for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘caravel’, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world.
