 On Sept. 28, 1924, two United States Army planes landed in Seattle, Washington, having completed the first round-the-world flight in 175 days. (Go to article.)

On Sept. 28, 1901, Ed Sullivan, who entertained millions of Americans with his long-running Sunday night variety show, was born. Following his death on Oct. 13, 1974, his obituary appeared in The Times. (Go to obit. | Other Birthdays)
