Justinian's wife Theodora and her retinue, in a 6th century mosaic from the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna.

The Early Middle Ages are a period in the history of Europe following the fall of the Western Roman Empire spanning roughly the five centuries from AD 500 to 1000.[1] Aspects of continuity with the earlier classical period are discussed in greater detail under the heading "Late Antiquity". The Early Middle Ages were followed by the High Middle Ages.
