SUMERIA/CHALDEA                                                                          continued

The reference to a monster arising from the sea has often been taken
to suggest that Oannes emerged from a submarine.

One is inclined to be of the opinion that this band of civilizers - for there
must have been more than one person to accomplish all these things -
were conveyed to their destination by a vessel, the like of which was
totally unfamiliar to the natives.

Maybe a hovercraft?  The clothing they wore would have been of a pro-
tective nature and probably made of some kind of waterproof material,
while the fish motif would inicate that they were either mariners or tra-
velling in the aquatic mode.

The fact that Oannes refrained from sharing the food enjoyed by the
natives suggests that he and his band obviously followed a strict, and
probably priestly, diet, supplies of which they kept on board their ship.

The allusion to "a day" is also misleading, and suggests a people who had
no concept of time, as it is known and allocated in civilized society.

Somehow, it is difficult to conceive of Oannes and his band of followers as
being Frisians or "Sea People" from the north, and one is therefore inclined
to view them as Atlanteans.

The Astronomy they taught the Chaldeans was certainly highly advanced,
as may be seen in the Chaldean knowledge of the solar system and the
ninth planet in particular (excluding the Sun and Moon), the existence of
which is only just receiving credence from the scientific establishment.

Initially, the biblical version of the Flood was not taken seriously out-
side the bastions of Hebraic and Christian fundamentalism.

Numerous legends and other archaeological finds in Mesopotamia
change that.  In 1872 scholar and Assyriologist George Smith, while
studying the ancient cuneiform texts from the library of King
Assurbanipal IV, unearthed in the ruins of Nineveh, found what is
referred to as the GILGAMESH EPIC.

This story of Gilgamesh, the legendary hero of the Chaldeans, whose
exploits featured so prominently in the Sumero-Babylonian mythology,
relates the event of the Flood and subsequent changes to the world.

Archaeologists investigating the ruins of Nippur at a later date, disco-
vered a more ancient Sumerian version of the Creation and Flood
Myths, which adds credence to the Biblical Texts, although one strongly
suspects that the latter was borrowed from the former.

There are two versions of the Deluge story, unequally developed, but
exhibiting a remarkable agreement.

The shorter of these was extracted by Berossus from the Sacred
Books of Babylon, and later introduced into the history he wrote for
the Greeks.

Nine kings are mentioned as having ruled over Sumeria and Mesopotamia,
prior the the Flood, then:

"Obartes Elbaratutu being dead, his son Xisuthros (Khasisatra)
reigned eighteen sares (64,800 years).  It was under him that the
Great Deluge took place, the history of which is told in the Sacred
Documents as follows: Cronos (Ea) appeared to him in his sleep, and
announced that on the fifteenth of the month of Daisios (the
Assyrian month Sivan - a little before the summer solstice) all men
should perish by a flood.  He therefore commanded him to take the
beginning, the middle, and the end of whatever was consigned to
writing, and to bury it in the City of the Sun, at Sippara; then to
build a vessel and to enter it with his family and dearest friends; to
place in this vessel provisions to eat and drink, and to cause animals,
birds and quadrupeds to enter it; lastly, to prepare everything for
navigation.  And when Xisuthros inquired in what direction he
should steer his bark, he was answered "toward the gods," and
enjoined to pray that good might come of it for men.

Xisuthros obeyed, and constructed a vessel five stadia long and
five broad; he collected all that had been prescribed to him and
embarked his wife, his children, and his intimate friends.

The Deluge having come, and soon going down, Xisuthros
loosed some of the birds.  These, finding no food nor place to alight
on, returned to the ship.  A few days later Xisuthros again let them
free, but they returned again to the vessel, their feet full of mud.
Finally, loosed the third time, the birds came no more back.  Then
Xisuthros understood that the earth was bare.  He made an opening
in the roof of the ship, and saw that it had grounded on the top of a
mountain.  He then descended with his wife, his daughter, and his
pilot, who worshipped the earth, raised an altar, and there sacrificed
to the gods; at the same moment he vanished with those who
accompanied him.

Meanwhile those who had remained in the vessel, not seeing
Xisuthros return, descended too, and began to seek him, calling him
by his name.  They saw Xisuthros no more; but a voice from heaven
was heard commanding them piety toward the gods; that he, indeed,
was receiving the reward of his piety in being carried away to dwell
thenceforth in the midst of the gods, and that his wife, his daughter,
and the pilot of the ship shared the same honor.  The voice futher
said that they were to return to Babylon, and, conformably to the
degrees of fate, disinter the witings buried at Sippara in order to
transmit them to men.  It added that the country in which they
found themselves was Armenia.  These, then, having heard the voice,
sacrificed to the gods and returned on foot to Babylon.  Of the
vessel of Xisuthros, which had finally landed in Armenia, a portion
is still to be found in the Gordyan Mountains in Armenia, and
pilgrims bring thence asphalte that they have scraped from its
fragments.  It is used to keep off the influence of witchcraft.  As to
the companions of Xisuthros, they came to Babylon, disinterred the
writings left at Sippara, founded numerous cities, built temples, and
restored Babylon"

One is tempted to think that Xisuthros and his crew met with an
accident shortly after alighting.  With so much mud and debris
around, it would have been easy to slip down a concealed crevice
or into some newly formed quagmire.

Flood legends the world over seem to agree on one point - that the
inundation was visited upon humanity because of its transgression
against the gods (misuse of cosmic laws or possibly the laws of
nature?).

We cannot include all of these for comparisons, but suffice it to say
that the Sumero-Babylonian version is standard and, taken in context
with other data relating to the early days of that culture, does suggest
both an Atlantean influence in the founding of civilization in those parts
and a confirmation of the events that precipitated the Atlantean conte-
nents's final sinking.

Legends of several tribes of North American Indians complement and confirm
similar tales from European and African sources.  Whether the Atlanteans
actually established colonies in the North American continent, however, is
open to debate.  Many researcers suggest that a colonization took place
further south, with those tribes of Indians who had come under Atlantean
influence making their way north after the cataclysm.

In a letter dated August 1683 the Quaker colonist William Penn gave this
graphic description of the Indians of Pennsylvania:

"The natives....are generally tall, straight, well built, and of singular
proportion; they tread strong and clever, and mostly walk with a
lofty chin...Their eye is little and black, not unlike a straight-
looked Jew....I have seen among them as comely European-like
faces of both sexes as on your side of the sea; and truly an Italian
complexion hath not much more of the white, and the noses of
several of them have as much of the Roman....For their original,
I am ready to believe them to be of the Jewish race - I mean of the
stock of the ten tribes - and that for the following reasons:....I
find them to be of the like countenance, and their children of so
lively a resemblance that a man would think himself in Duke's
Place or Berry Street in London when he seeth them.  But this is not
all: they agree in rites, they reckon by moons, they offer their first-
fruits, they have a kind of feast of tabernacles, they are said to lay
their altars upon twelve stones, their mourning a year, customs of
women, with many other things that do not now occur."

The Mandan Indians, of whose tribe there seem to be few, if any sur-
vivors, are considered by some authorities as being likely candidates
for Atlantean ancestry.  Not only did the history of this tribe contain
a detailed Flood legend but, until the last century, its peoples had also
preserved an image of an ark-like vessel, around which was performed
a religious ceremony that clearly referred to the destruction of Atlantis.

Many of the Mandans were white people with hazel, grey or blue eyes,
and hair varying from dark-brown to ash-blond.  The Mandans lived in
fortified towns and manufactured earthenware pots, which they used
for boiling water - a custom unique to their tribe.

Ignatius Donnelly quotes the following report of a Mandan ceremony,
written by George Catlin, who visited the Mandans in the mid-nine-
teenth century.

"In the centre of the village is an open space, or public square, 150
feet [46 metres] in diameter and circular in form, which is used for
all public games and festivals, shows and exhibitions.  The lodges
around this open space front in, with their doors towards the centre;
and in the middle of this stands an object of great religious
veneration, on account of the importance it has in connection with
the annual religious ceremonies.  This object is in the form of a large
hogshead, some eight or ten feet [2 1/2 or 3 metres] high, made of
planks and hoops, containing within it some of their choicest
mysteries or medicines.  They call it the Big Canoe.......

On the day set apart for the commencement of the ceremonies a
solitary figure is seen approaching the village.

During the deafening din and confusion within the pickets of the
village, the figure discovered on the prairie continued to approach
with a dignified step, and in a right line toward the village, all eyes
were upon him, and he at legth made his appearance within the
pickets, and proceeded toward the centre of the village where all
the chiefs and braves stood ready to receive him, which they did
in a cordial manner by shaking hands, recognizing him as an old
acquaintance, and pronouncing his name, Nu-mohk-muck-a-nah
(the first or only man).  The body of this strange personage, which
was chiefly naked, was painted with white clay, so as to resemble
at a distance a WHITE MAN.  He enters the medicine lodge, and
goes through certain mysterious ceremonies.

During the whole of this day Nu-mohk-muck-a-nah (the first or
only man) travelled through the village, stopping in front of each
man's lodge, and crying until the owner of the lodge came out and
asked who he was, and what was the matter?  To which he replied
by narrating THE SAD CATASTROPHE WHICH HAD HAPPENED ON THE
EARTH'S SURFACE BY THE OVERFLOWING OF THE WATERS, saying
that "he was the ONLY PERSON SAVED FROM THE UNIVERSAL CALA-
MITY; that he landed his big canoe on a high mountain in the west,
where he now resides; that he has come to open the medicine lodge
which must needs receive a present of an edged tool from the owner
of every wigwam, that it may be sacrificed to the water; "For", he says,
"if this is not done, there will be another flood, and no one will be
saved, as it was with such tools that the big canoe was made"

Having visited every lodge in the village during the day, and having
received such a present from each as a hatchet, a knife, etc, he
places them in the medicine lodge; and, on the last day of the
ceremony, they are thrown into a deep place in the river -
"sacrificed to the Spirit of the Waters"

Catlin then described how twelve men danced around the ark, having
arranged themselves according to the four cardinal points, and coloured
themselves black, red or white.  The dance they executed was called
Bel-lohck-na-pie, and the horned headdresses they wore reminded Cat-
lin of those used in Europe as symbolical of Bel, or Baal.

From the aforegoing, one might suppose that a single man or group of
men escaped the Flood and fled to those parts, but other Mandan tribal
legends related by Donnelly prompts one to think that the Mandans, and
several other tribes of Indians, originally lived along the eastern seaboard
of America on a series of islands that ultimately sank during the great
cataclysm, but were previously only a short journey by sea from the
Atlantean mainland.

Atlantean traders calling in those parts would account for the introduct-
ion of new blood groups and colourings.  What their ceremonies do pro-
vide us with, however, is verification of the Flood and the loss of a
large land to the east of the American continent where their ancestors
lived in "cities with inextinguishable lights" - Atlantis

Several people maintain that Atlantis was at one time joined to the
American continent and, interestingly, confirmation for this is to be
found in the legends of the Okanagaus, which tell of a time when the
Sun was no biger than a star, and the land was ruled by a strong
medicinewoman (matriarchal system?).  Much to her chagrin, however,
her subjects fell out among themselves and created a noisy war, which
angered her so much that she broke off the piece of land upon which
they dwert and pushed it out to sea to drift whither it would.

It was later afflicted by some giant catastrophe from which only a man
and a woman escaped in a canoe and arrived on the mainland, and it is
from these two survivors that the whole Okanagaus tribe was descend-
ed.

In spite of the wealth of Flood legends that are to be found among
American Indians, it is hard to conceive of an actual Atlantean colony
in those parts.  Trade, perhaps, and a degree of intermarriage, but no-
thing on the scale of Egypt or even South and Central America.

The discoveries in Bimini in the 1960s have caused quite a stir, especially
as they coincided with a time given for the finding of Atlantis by the
American seer Edgar Cayce.

The entire area of the Bahama Banks is believed to have been above sea-
level during the last glaciation, but disappeared beneath the waters when
the sea-level rose, following the melting of the ice.

Dr. Manson Valentine, a palaeontologist, geologist and underwater archaeo-
logist of Miami, who had been studying the underwater Bahama Banks for
some twenty-five years, became convinced that this area held the clues
to a civilization that existed before the Flood.

Investigating the area between Orange Key and Bimini off the Florida coast,
he discovered a series of giant rectangles along the sea bottom connected
by straight lines.

In fact, the ocean bed in that area abounded with architectural patterns
that could not be attributed to nature.

It was in 1968 that Valentine first saw the enormous stones that were ob-
viously the remnants of a man-made causeway.

In an inteview with Charles Berlitz, Valentine explained:

"Many of the stones are of flint-hard micrite, unlike soft beach rock.

The lines of closely fitted stones are straight, mutually parallel, and
terminate in cornerstones.

The stone avenue does not follow the curving beach rock-line, which
follows the shape of the island, but is straight.

The long avenue contains enormous flat stones propped up at their
corners by pillar stones, like the dolmens of the coast of Western
Europe.

Perfect rectangles, right angles, and rectilinear configurations are
unaccountable in a natural formation.  One end of the complex
swings into a beautifully curved corner before vanishing under the
sand.

No one has yet dug underneath it, so we don't know how far down
the stones go."

Valentine believed the causeway was a ceremonial road leading to a
special site, and that further investigation might well uncover buildings,
but feared that more orthodox archaeologists might fight shy of such
research in case it upset their anticataclysmic opinions.

During the course of a later expedition, a grooved building block was
brought up, together with a stylized head believed to be that of a giant
feline and weighing between 200 and 300 pounds (90 and 136 Kilograms).

All in all, there seems little doubt that a prehistoric civilization specializ-
ing in monolithic building occupied those lands prior to their submergence,
but whether these people were Plato's Atlanteans, or pre-Atlantean
Lemurians/Muans, is still open to conjecture.

ATLANTIS - Myth or Reality?

The character of Atlas is to be found among the Chibchas of Bogota'.  Bochica,
their leading divinity in ancient times, spent many years elevating his subjects.

He dwelt in the Sun, while his wife occupied the Moon.  A lesser divinity in the
Chibchas pantheon named Chbchacum, in a fit of pique, brought a Deluge on the
people of the tableland, for which act he was severely punished by Bochica, who
obliged him to bear the burden of the Earth upon his back.

When he occasionally shifts the burden from one shoulder to the other for com-
fort, earthquakes are caused.

When answering the prayers of the people to quell the Deluge, Bochica appeared
seated on a rainbow.

According to Braghine, the last representatives of a strange white-skinned Indian
tribe are still to be found in Venezuela.

"They are called Paria, and some years ago inhabited a village called Atlan, in the
virgin forests between Apure and Orinoco, but are now almost extinct.

They possessed traditions of a certain catastrophe which destroyed their father-
land, a large island in the ocean inhabited by a prosperous and "wonderful" race.

Their descendants lived for a long time among the Venezuelan Indians as a sepa-
rate tribe."

CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA                                                      continued

The Toltecs claimed to have originated in a land called Azlan or Atlan;
the original home of the Nahautlacas was Aztlan; the Aztecs also tell
of their ancestors from Aztlan.

According to the POPUL VUH, after their migration from Aztlan the three
sons of the king of the Quiches, upon the death of their father, "........
determined to go as their fathers had ordered to the East, on the shores
of the sea whence their fathers had come, to receive the royalty, "bid-
ding adieu to their brothers and friends and promising to return."

The information gleaned from blood samples taken from Inca mummies
tends to suggest that the royal families, anyway, hailed from the "Old
Country", and the lands over which they ruled could certainly be classed
as Atlantean colonies of the first order.

CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA                                                           continued

Donnelly saw the Atlantean colonies of Central and South America
as stretching from the shores of Mexico to the peninsula of Yuca-
tan, from Brazil to the heights of Bolivia and Peru, and from the Gulf
of Mexico to the headwaters of the Mississippi River.

Perhaps he was right, but one is inclined to see some of the ancient
peoples of those parts as more Lemurian or Muan than Atlantean,
which would suggest that their coastal lands were inundated in earl-
ier times, when the Atlantean island originally separated from the
American mainland.

Lewis Spence conceived of Atlantis as originally being a much larger
land mass than Plato described, which split into two sections, the
second of which he named Antillia.

Assuming Wegener to be correct, this was possibly true and, as
Spence places Antillia closer to the American coastline than Plato's
location for Atlantis, it would accomodate many of the aforemention-
ed legends of the Americas, and the Mandan, Yucatan and Bimini
connections.
