GREECE                                                                                           continued

The various tales of the exploits of Poseidon should not, therefore,
be attributed to the deeds of a single deity, but rather to those
enigmatic "Sea Peoples", be they Atlanteans or Frisians, who impo-
sed themselves upon the natives of Corinth, Aegina, Naxos, Delphi
and other Mediterranean locations.

Working on this assumption, Poseidon's famous "sea monsters" would
have been nothing more than the large and unfamiliar ships, probably
sporting animal figureheads or gargoyle-like decorations,

Likewise, Poseidon's association with the horse probably arose from the
fact that the Atlanteans were among the earliest people to domesticate
that animal and, as we shall see, many of the peoples who claim Atlan-
tean ancestry count equine skills among their accomplisments.
