EGYPT                                                                                     continued

Of course, Schwaller de Lubicz is by no means the first to believe that
the Sphinx predated the Flood and was probably constructed by the
Atlanteans centuries earlier.

When Napoleon arrived in Egypt in the late eighteenth century, the
Sphinx was buried up to the neck in sand, while the temple adjacent
to it was invisible.

Its body, anyway, had therefore been protected for thousands of years.

In 1819 it was excavated by Cavaglia and again in 1853 by Mariette.
The ever-moving sands buried it again for Maspero to clear in 1888 and,
in 1916, it was reported in a fashionable guidebook as once again being
covered.

Periods when it was covered can be assessed from lack of references to
its existence in various periods of Egyptian history.

From
the time of Pharaoh Chephren (c.2700BC) onwards Egypt underwent a
period of political stability that lasted some four centuries.  It then entered
a period of chaos, a pattern that was repeated over many centuries and
seems to bear out the Chaos theory of the perpetual pendulum.

It has been suggested that, because the sculptors of Egypt were past
masters at producing the faces of Pharaohs exactly in all mediums, the
original face of the Sphinx might well have been exchanged for the like-
ness of Chephren, a deception that has continued to play its role down the
pages of history.

It may be that, in spite of suggestions made by Atlantologists and others
as to the symbology of the human face and in the light of the importance
of the sign of Leo to the priests and scholars of the earliest dynasty, and
the information concerning Sirius, the original face might well have been
leonine.
