Polls: Obama up in 4 battleground states
Posted: 11:55 AM ET

From CNN Political Producer Alexander Marquardt

CNN's breakdown of the electoral college map.
(CNN) — A set of polls released Thursday shows Barack Obama leading John McCain in four critical battleground states — Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado and Minnesota.

A new Quinnipiac University/Wall Street Journal/Washingtonpost.com survey put Obama up significantly over the Arizona senator in Minnesota — 54-37 percent – and Wisconsin — 52-39 percent. His lead is smaller in Colorado — 49-44 percent — and Michigan — 48-42 percent.

This comes on the heels of another Quinnipiac poll last week that had Obama leading in the key swing states of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida.

In a briefing on Wednesday, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe explained the campaign's strategy to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency. The campaign is counting on winning the 20 states John Kerry won in 2004, looking to add Iowa, and then setting their sights on several others. Among those: the four states included in Thursday's poll.

Plouffe said Michigan is one of the most competitive states, attributing its competitiveness to the fact that Obama didn't campaign or run ads there in the primary. He claimed they are "very strong" in Colorado and "very competitive" in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The poll surveyed between 1,300 and 1,600 likely voters from June 17-24 with margins of error of plus or minus 2.5 percent for Minnesota and Wisconsin, 2.6 percent for Michigan and 2.7 percent for Colorado.

The latest CNN national poll of polls has Obama up 48-40 over McCain among registered voters nationwide.

CNN's Electoral Map: Two states shift to ObamaPosted: 09:30 AM ET

CNN's New Electoral College map.
(CNN) — Two more states have shifted to Barack Obama's column in the new CNN Electoral Map that charts the candidates’ strength leading up to the November election.

"Toss-up" states Minnesota and Wisconsin were re-designated to "Lean-Obama" Friday, giving the presumptive Democratic nominee another 20 electoral votes in CNN's current estimate. The Illinois senator now has 231 electoral votes — 39 shy of winning the presidency.

CNN made the change after new polling conducted by Quinnipiac University showed that Obama holds double-digit leads over presumptive Republican nominee John McCain in both states. CNN's analysis estimates McCain has 194 electoral votes.

This is only a CNN estimate and is likely to change many more times in the lead up to the election.

The Quinnipiac surveys, released Thursday, showed Obama with a 17-point lead in Minnesota, 54-37 percent, and a 13 point lead in Wisconsin, 52-39 percent.

Poll shows Connecticut is Obama country
Posted: 12:15 PM ET

From CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney

CNN's Electoral map breakdown.
(CNN) – John McCain has the backing of Connecticut's Democratic-turned-Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman, but a new poll out Wednesday shows the state is decidedly Obama country.

According to a new poll from Quinnipiac University, Barack Obama is leading McCain in the state by more than 20 points, 56 percent to 35 percent. Much of that lead stems from the Illinois senator's 16 point advantage among independent voters in the state. He also pulls in 16 percent of Republicans there.

Connecticut has long tilted Democratic in presidential elections, and recent Republican White House hopefuls have often spent few resources there. It voted for John Kerry in 2004 by a margin of 10 points, and for Al Gore in 2000 by a 16 point margin. CNN considers the state's seven electoral votes safely in Obama's column.

The poll also provides further evidence that Lieberman, who bucked his former party late last year by endorsing McCain, holds little sway with voters in his home state when it comes to the presidential election. Even if McCain chose Lieberman as his No. 2, a prospect that most political observers agree is highly unlikely, only 14 percent of Connecticut voters said they would be more likely to vote for the Republican ticket.

Lieberman also appears to be hurting his own approval rating in Connecticut as he increasingly becomes one of McCain's most visible surrogates on the campaign trail.

Watch: Lieberman touts McCain

In a Quinnipiac poll released earlier this week, the Connecticut senator's job approval rating stood at 45 percent, the first time his it has dipped below the 50 percent line in that survey. Sixty-two percent of Connecticut Democrats now hold a negative view of their party’s Democratic vice presidential candidate.
