Jill Valentine

Jill Valentine is a video game character in the Resident Evil survival horror series. She is one of the protagonists in the original Resident Evil, where she is introduced as a member of the Special Tactics And Rescue Service, part of the unit's Alpha Team. She is in charge of rear security and specializes in bomb disposal (an ability she acquired as a Delta Force operative). She returned as the protagonist in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, where she was no longer a member of S.T.A.R.S., merely a citizen trying to survive the viral outbreak in Raccoon City. She has been played by Lisa Faye (credited as Inezh) in the original Resident Evil, Catherine Disher in Resident Evil 3, Heidi Anderson in the GameCube version of the original game, and Tara Platt in Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii.

She is one of the most prominent characters in the franchise, appearing in other Capcom games in the form of a cameo or a crossover appearance. Jill is notable for being the first major game character to appear in the Resident Evil films with her appearance in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, which was a loose adaptation of Resident Evil 3, where she is played by Sienna Guillory.

History

Jill Valentine made her first appearance as one of the two selectable protagonists in the original Resident Evil along with Chris Redfield. The premise of the first game revolves around Alpha Team's attempt to escape a zombie-infested mansion. Jill's version of the game differs from Chris' in terms of difficulty. In addition to having a higher carrying capacity than Chris, Jill is also given the benefit of a lockpicking tool that allows her to unlock simple locks (Jill is referred as the "master of unlocking" in the original version of the first game), as well as a grenade launcher. However, she cannot take as much damage as Chris. Jill's partner in the game is Barry Burton, Alpha Team's weapons expert. Barry helps Jill out several times, sometimes rescuing her from peril.

Jill returned as the sole protagonist in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Set during a time period that overlaps with the events of Resident Evil 2, the game depicts Jill's attempt to escape zombie-infested Raccoon City. During the game, she is hunted down by the Nemesis, the Umbrella Corporation's newest B.O.W., sent to eliminate the surviving S.T.A.R.S. members due to their knowledge of the Mansion Incident in the first game. Along the way, she teams up with a U.B.C.S. mercenary named Carlos Oliveira, who serves as Jill's partner character in the game. Ultimately, Jill and Carlos manage to escape from Raccoon City (either by themselves or with Barry's help, depending on the ending), moments before its destruction. In Jill's epilogue in the game, she is seeking to reunite with Chris, but to no avail. In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, it is mentioned that she has joined an anti-Umbrella group.

Appearance

Jill in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.Jill's standard outfit is a pair of blue assault pants with a light blue formfitting shirt and body armor, completed with a blue beret on her head. In addition to her S.T.A.R.S. uniform in the first game, Jill's alternate casual outfit consisted of a cropped black t-shirt and jeans. In Resident Evil: Director's Cut, she wore a sleeveless blouse with jeans and boots as a default outfit in the game's Arranged Mode. The Saturn version of the first game also featured Jill in an alternate version of her S.T.A.R.S. uniform.

In Resident Evil 3, she wears a blue tube top, black leather mini-skirt and a white sweater wrapped around her waist as her default outfit. This is the outfit worn by Sienna Guillory in the second film, and is worn by Jill in Under the Skin. She has a total of five alternate outfits (eight in later versions), including her original S.T.A.R.S. uniform, an outfit that makes her resemble Regina, the heroine of the Dino Crisis series, a police uniform, a biker outfit, and a disco outfit. The Dreamcast and PC versions of Nemesis also featured two additional costumes not seen in the other versions. One was an outfit similar to her default outfit, however, the top was a black sleeveless turtleneck with a denim skirt and black boots. The other outfit had the same color-scheme as the default, but instead of being a tube top and skirt, it was a blue blouse and black pants. The Resident Evil remake for the Gamecube featured her standard Resident Evil 3 outfit and a new military outfit modeled after Sarah Connor's outfit from Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

In Resident Evil: Deadly Silence (the Nintendo DS port of the original), Jill gets to wear her original casual outfit, as well as a revealing policewoman uniform in the game's "Rebirth" mode.

During the original games' conception, Jill is notorious for going through more changes in her appearance than any other character.

Heidi Anderson's facial design and expressions were mimicked for Jill's in the remake of Resident Evil.

Movies

Resident Evil: Apocalypse

In the movie Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Jill is portrayed by Sienna Guillory. Early in the film, a newspaper article in her apartment hints at her dismissal from the S.T.A.R.S. unit and her involvement with Umbrella. Both add to similarities between the movie and the game Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Although, due to the vastly different conclusion, as well as the role of Alice, the game and movie are officially considered alternate universes.
In Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Jill had been a rising star in the S.T.A.R.S. organization, before her reputation was ruined after a botched mission known as "The Arklay Mountains Incident". Information from the movie's website indicates that she gained insight into a "classified bioweapon weakness", which was said to be a "cranial flaw". Initially the Umbrella Corporation intended to bribe her, so their bioweapons wouldn't lose market value. Had that failed, they planned to have her "neutralized". In the film, Jill maintains a strong friendship with S.T.A.R.S. officer Peyton Wells. During a T-virus outbreak in Raccoon City, Jill attempted to leave the city through a quarantine screening set up by Umbrella at Ravens Gate Bridge. When the infection reached the Gates, Umbrella sealed off the sector and urged that all citizens return to their homes.
Upon heading back to the city, Jill stumbled upon news reporter Terri Morales, who managed to video tape Umbrella's actions at the Bridge. When Jill decides to hold up at Ravens Gate Church, her group is attacked by Lickers. Alice manages to locate Jill and her companions whom are hiding out. It is notable that Jill is far less self-sufficient in the movie, and likely would have died if not for the help of Alice. When Umbrella intervenes Dr. Ashford's plan to use Alice to get his daughter Angela out of the city in exchange for a safe departure out of the city. Jill is taken hostage by Umbrella soldiers and is later released by Carlos during a gunfight (with Umbrella agents) against Alice at Raccoon City Hall. Before the destruction of Raccoon City, Jill manages to get the survivors out. Upon departure the helicopter is hit by the blast wave and crashes into the Arklay Mountains. All except Alice survive the crash; the remaining survivors flee the scene.
At the end of Apocalypse, Carlos and Jill are both wanted criminals by Umbrella for allegedly posting a hoax video to cover up a nuclear meltdown that occurred at Raccoon City. Both "infiltrate" Umbrella's Chicago Facility to recover Alice, who was resurrected using a new viral agent. It is shown at the end that they were "allowed" to infiltrate Umbrella and rescue Alice.
Resident Evil: Extinction
Sienna Guillory who portrays Jill Valentine will not reprise her role in Resident Evil: Extinction. During the film's pre-production stage, Sienna confirmed that she was given an offer but couldn't accept due to schedule conflicts with Eragon, according to an interview from Empire magazine.

Novels

In S.D. Perry's novelizations of the games, it is stated that Jill is the daughter of a professional thief (Dick Valentine), and was his accomplice prior to her career in law enforcement, explaining her unrivaled infiltration skills and expertise at lockpicking. However, this back-story is not supported by any of the games and is considered non-canonical.
Video games
•   In the video game Dead Rising there is a restaurant called "Jill's Sandwiches", which is a parody of Barry Burton's infamous line from the original Resident Evil: "You were almost a Jill Sandwich!". The description of Jill's Sandwiches states "Jill is the master of sandwich making", an obvious parody of Barry's other infamous line; "Jill, here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you."
•   Jill has a Character Card in SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash. In the Japan-only Card Fighters Clash 2, the design on her card was changed to reflect her Resident Evil 3 design.
•   Jill appears in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 as a playable character. She comes equipped with all her trademark weaponry from Resident Evil. As "special moves", Jill summon incoming monsters, such as zombies, zombie dogs, and crows, leaving her opponent to deal with them. She can also use a rocket launcher as a Hyper Combo. As another Hyper Combo, the Tyrant appears and slashes Jill's opponent relentlessly and as a hidden command, she can pull out her rocket launcher and blast the Tyrant, causing additional damage to her opponent.

Trivia

•   Catherine Disher is the only voice actress who has voiced Jill in more than one game; she did so in Resident Evil 3 & Marvel Vs Capcom 2.
•   Jill was originally depicted as having long hair hidden under her beret, as noted by one of the game's alternate endings and official artwork. In later installments, she has short "bobbed" hair.
•   Gamespy.com recently rated Jill the seventh greatest video game babe of all time, and made remarks on how they await her return.[1]
•   Jill is one of the very few Capcom characters that speaks English in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 during gameplay. Most of the Capcom characters speak Japanese, while the Marvel characters speak English (excluding the Silver Samurai, who also speaks Japanese and Colossus, who speaks Russian).
•   Jill is the most reoccurring Resident Evil character, appearing in Resident Evil, Resident Evil 3, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash, Under the Skin, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.
•   In most fanfictions, Jill is paired with Chris.

Chris Redfield

Chris Redfield is a fictional character in the Resident Evil video game series. He is a member of the fictional Special Tactics And Rescue Service and serves as Alpha Team's point man. As a former member of the United States Air Force, he is also an experienced fighter pilot. Redfield returned as a playable character in Resident Evil Code: Veronica, who must search for, and ultimately rescue, his younger sister. He was voiced by Scott McCulloch (credited as "Charlie") in the original Resident Evil, Michael Fipowich in Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Joe Whyte in the Nintendo GameCube remake of the original title.

History

Chris debuted in the original Resident Evil title alongside fellow S.T.A.R.S. operative Jill Valentine. Chris' story is significantly harder than Jill's, due to Chris having a reduced carrying capacity, the absence of items such as the lockpick and grenade launcher afforded to Jill, and a far more passive supporting character.[citation needed] However, Chris is able to sustain more damage than Jill. His partner in the game is Rebecca Chambers, a rookie member of S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team, who assists Chris with her expertise in chemistry and medicine.

Chris did not appear in Resident Evil 2. Instead, his younger sister, Claire, serves as one of the lead characters. Claire's plot revolves around her search for Chris following the events of the first game. It is later revealed that Chris had left Raccoon City, heading to Europe in order to further investigate the illegal activities of the Umbrella Corporation. However, Chris would appear as a bonus playable character in later versions of the release in the "Extreme Battle" minigame.

Chris returned as a lead character in Resident Evil Code: Veronica. Following the events of the first half of the game, the player takes control of Chris after learning of Claire's imprisonment on Rockfort Island. His mission takes him to Umbrella's secret lab in Antarctica, where he confronts Alexia Ashford, the creator of the T-Veronica Virus, and a resurrected Albert Wesker. He manages to save Claire and the two make their escape from the facility, vowing to destroy Umbrella together.

Chris Redfield in Resident Evil Code: Veronica

Wardrobe

Chris Redfield in Resident Evil Code: VeronicaIn the original Resident Evil, Chris wore a standard S.T.A.R.S. uniform consisting of grey pants, an M69 fragmentation vest with a knife sheath, and a white T-shirt. His alternate costume was a casual outfit featuring a brown bomber jacket with a "Made in Heaven" design on the back. In the Saturn version, he wears an unlockable black standard S.T.A.R.S. uniform. In Resident Evil: Director's Cut, his standard outfit is a plain gray T-shirt with shoulder pads and a holster.

Although not involved in the main game, in the "Extreme Battle" mode of Resident Evil 2, he still wears his standard S.T.A.R.S. outfit from the first game, but with modifications such as a "Made in Heaven" design on the back and elbow pads.

In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, he wears an olive green outfit with a black S.T.A.R.S. vest. According to the developers, this was a prototype uniform that was scheduled to be adopted by S.T.A.R.S., but was not due to the unit's destruction after the first game. Instead, Chris took the prototype outfit with him when he left Raccoon City.

In the Resident Evil remake, his Code: Veronica outfit is unlockable along with an original skater outfit that closely resembles a Brad Pitt character Jerry Welbach in the movie The Mexican. In Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, Chris' casual outfit from the first game can be unlocked, as well as a ninja outfit in the game's "Rebirth" mode.

In other media

During the release of the Sega Saturn version, Resident Evil, Capcom published a promotional sourcebook titled The True Story Behind Biohazard as a pre-order giveaway. The book contains an original short story titled Biohazard: The Beginning by Hiroyuku Ariga. The story depicts the events prior to the first game and fleshes out his character, describing the deaths of his parents in a car accident and his service in the Air Force. It should be noted that this story does not fit in the current version of the games' canon due to the way the series evolved. Chris also appears in the novelizations of the games written by S.D. Perry. He is also being portrayed by Darren Keefe in the upcoming film Resident Evil: Extinction

Chris, smoking a cigarette from the uncut opening of Resident Evil.

Trivia

Chris was originally characterized as a cigarette smoker as seen in uncensored version of the live-action footage used in the original uncut version of Resident Evil. Due to SCEA's strict policy against depiction of tobacco use, all scenes that featured Chris were edited. Ironically enough, Chris has a lighter in his default equipment in the GameCube version of the game (which he had to obtain separately in both the original release and Resident Evil Code: Veronica.

History

During the initial development of Resident Evil 2, the designers originally planned to have a character named Elza Walker to be the female lead accompanying Leon S. Kennedy. Elza was almost included in the released version of the game until Capcom decided to scrap an 80% completed build of the game (later dubbed Resident Evil 1.5) and restarted development. In this new version, Elza was redesigned into Claire Redfield. Like Elza, Claire was also a college student and motorcyclist, with the main difference being that Claire is the younger sister of Chris Redfield (whereas Elza had no relationship with any established character). To heighten the resemblance between the siblings, Claire was given brown hair instead of blonde, blue eyes and an outfit that resembles Chris' S.T.A.R.S. uniform (including the presence of a knife sheath).[citation needed]

Resident Evil 2 revolves around Claire's search for her missing brother. She arrives in Raccoon City to find the town being overrun by zombies. She seeks refuge in the city's police station, and learns that Chris has already left for Europe in order to investigate the activities of the Umbrella Corporation, the company responsible for the viral outbreak in the city. The rest of the game focuses on Claire's attempt to escape from the city alive. She maintains radio contact with Leon and teams up with a young girl named Sherry, while fighting against the various creatures infesting the precinct, including a mutated William Birkin. Claire eventually found a secret passage that leads her from the precinct into a sewer that takes her into Umbrella's underground lab. In the aftermath of the game, Claire escapes from the lab along with Leon and Sherry and eventually the three of them manage to destroy the mutated Birkin. As revealed in the epilogues of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Claire left the city by herself in order to continue her search for Chris, while Leon and Sherry were retrieved by the U.S. Military.

In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Claire is the player's character for the first half of the game. After an unsuccessful infiltration of Umbrella's medical branch in Paris, Claire finds herself locked in a prison. She escapes and teams up with fellow prisoner Steve Burnside (who also serves as Claire's love interest) following another viral outbreak, this time caused by a rival corporation of Umbrella's. The pair escape from the island, only to find themselves in another of Umbrella's secret labs, this time in Antarctica, before they are taken captive by Alexia Ashford. The second half of the game follows Chris trying to save his captured sister from Umbrella. He finds his way into the Antarctic lab and rescues a captive Claire before the final battle with Alexia. The siblings escape from the facility via jet during the game's ending and they vow to put an end to the Umbrella Corporation's activities.

Ali Larter as Claire Redfield in Resident Evil: Extinction.

Wardrobe
Claire's original outfit in Resident Evil 2 consisted of a black short-sleeved, short-legged cycling skinsuit worn under a pink zip-up sleeveless jacket with a "Made in Heaven" design on the back, pink-dyed high-waisted denim cutoff short-shorts with a tan belt, tanned knee-high boots, a brown knife sheath on her left shoulder and long, black fingerless riding gloves. Her alternate outfit in the game consists of a leather jacket and matching pants with a "Let Me Live" design on the back, tan boots and a red bandanna. In the N64 version, this outfit is coloured purple and features the Angels Studio logo (the company that designed the N64 port) on the back with black boots and a slightly different design. The Dual Shock Version's is denim with flame designs on the sleeves of the jacket and the legs of the jeans.

In Resident Evil Code: Veronica, she wears a cropped red button-up sleeveless vest (with another "Let Me Live" design across the back) over a short black form-fitting mid-sleeve shirt with high-waisted jeans and red boots with a pink choker as her standard outfit. She wears an alternate outfit in the game's Battle Mode consisting of red and black high-waisted boy shorts and matching cropped tank top with Umbrella's logo on the sides, with white knee-high boots. Claire is also shown wearing a third costume consisting of a red skintight unitard in the game's unlockable art gallery.

The titles on the back of her jackets (in her original outfits and alternate ones as well) are homages to songs by the band, Queen. One of the games designers was once questioned about this link in an interview and expressed that they were indeed fans of the band and felt that the titles tied in so well with the theme of the games.
