There is a lot of confusion with these terms so I thought it best to begin a topic on them:

The Near East is a term commonly used by archaeologists, geographers and historians, less commonly by journalists and commentators, to refer to the region encompassing Anatolia (the Asian portion of modern Turkey), the Levant (modern Israel, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon), Armenia, and Mesopotamia (Iraq and eastern Syria). The alternative term Middle East — preferred in some political and economic contexts — is not used by Near Eastern archaeologists and historians.

So what we are, in essence, talking about when it comes to the Near East is actally the more commonly known "Middle East," Persia (Iran), of course, not included.

The Far East is an inexact term often used for Northeast Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia combined, sometimes including also the easternmost territories of Russia, i.e. the Russian Far East, as well as the western Pacific Ocean region.

Far East is sometimes used synonymously with East Asia, which may be defined in geographic or cultural terms to Russia's East, central and coastal China, Taiwan, Japan, both north and south Korea, the Philippines and Vietnam, as well as the states and cultures of the rest of Southeast Asia, such as Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, East Timor, and to a much lesser extent, South Asia such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan.

As we can see, the Far East refers to a different region and is much further away.

Hmm.  I never gave it much thought, but what has happened is that the term "Near East" has been replaced over the decades by the term "Middle East."  Now, as long as everybody understands what we're talking about, it shouldn't matter in the long run.  Language is often illogical.   Wink

Just out of curiosity, what countries would be encompassed by the term "Asia Minor"?

Asia Minor (also the same as Anatolia) would simply be Turkey, and the countries of the "upper" Middle East - Jordan, Lebanon, upper Iraq.  The Hittites, Assyrians, Catal Hoyuk and Troy would apply.

I think we'll have to add a Middle East/Far East section here eventually as I see that the Persians don't technically fit into any of the categories.

Don't feel bad about it, Zaphod, the terms are commonly confused,.  When it comes to Asia Minor, best thing is to just think, "Turkey."
