THE GREAT ISLANDS UNDER THE SEA continued

It is through the progress of oceanographic geological research that
the theory of the vertical movement of tectonic plates and its modi-
fication of the continental-drift theory has brought about a reassess-
ment of the possibility that Atlantis once really existed as lands in the
Atlantic Ocean.

This is rather ironic, considering the longtime and violent opposition of
the geological and oceanographic establishment to any serious conside-
ration of Atlantis. But the moving tectonic plates open the door to an
explanation of how great islands could arise from or disappear into the
sea as a result of catastrophic movements of the Earth's crust arising
from the pressure against one another of these plates.

Perhaps, on some occasion, the pressure was further augmented by the
collision of Earth with an asteroid, or an imbalance within the planet it-
self, or a modification of its axis rotation.

The tectonic-plate theory brings Atlantis into a time-frame of hundreds, or
even thousands of years, instead of millions; in other words, within the ex-
perience and memory of the human race.

It also appears possible that a number of species other than man remember
Atlantis through evolutionary instinct. These species, by their sudden death
during a global catastrophe, bear witness to an event that changed the
climate and surface of the Earth.
