Dark Phoenix May Lose Over $100 Million

Dark Phoenix May Lose Over $100 Million
Over the weekend, Dark Phoenix came in well under its $50 million projected opening. Instead, 20th Century Fox’s final X-Men movie managed only $33 million and second place behind The Secret Life of Pets 2. That gave Dark Phoenix the lowest opening of any X-Men film. It may also be one of the biggest superhero bombs in recent memory.

According to Deadline, Dark Phoenix is estimated to lose $100 to $120 million after its final box office is tallied. The report also states that the film cost Fox around $350 million; which includes production costs, the reshoots, and the global publicity campaign. Dark Phoenix’s worldwide take is currently projected to land somewhere between $300 and $325 million. But one thing to keep in mind is that the studio splits those box office proceeds with the theaters. And China takes a much larger percentage out of American movie grosses than the other countries do.

RELATED: Dark Phoenix Review – Sending the X-Men Out With a Whimper
The report places the blame for this debacle squarely on Fox, as Dark Phoenix originally wrapped two summers ago. That was months before Fox and Disney began making a deal to merge the companies. Additionally, Deadline states that the climax wasn’t changed because of its similarities to Captain Marvel. Instead, it suggests that test audiences weren’t happy with the third act.

“The feeling from the audience in testing was that they wanted to see all the X-Men heroes fighting in the end,” noted the report. It also added that “the movie was never intended to be a summer film….It was always seen as an off-season release, and the original plan was to get out ahead of Captain Marvel and be the first female-led Marvel movie.”

While this is an embarrassing moment for Fox’s X-Men franchise, it shouldn’t hamper Marvel Studios’ eventual plans for these characters. However, perhaps an extended break between X-Men movies will be the best way forward. Marvel’s Kevin Feige has already suggested that the X-Men won’t appear in the MCU “for a very long time.” That may be for the best.

Why do you think Dark Phoenix failed to connect at the box office? Let us know in the comment section below!

Stars Reveal Dark Phoenix Was Being Constantly Rewritten on Set

Stars reveal Dark Phoenix was being constantly rewritten on set
We are just hours away from the official release of the last installment in the Fox’s X-Men franchise. As soon as Dark Phoenix hits the theaters, the mutants lead by Professor Xavier will come back to Marvel Studios. Speaking with Screen Rant, Dark Phoenix star Sophie Turner has revealed that director and writer Simon Kinberg was constantly rewriting movie’s screenplay on the set.

“Simon and I would sit down for two hours every day and just comb through each page of the script,” Turner said. “There was rewriting being done all the time.”

In the same interview, fellow Dark Phoenix star Jessica Chastain said that Kinberg used to decide the movie’s direction overnight.

“You could have a conversation and something comes from that and then the next morning, Simon would show up to work and say, ‘hey, I wrote some pages that I think could be interesting for this direction we’re going,'” Chastain stated.

Now all that rests to see is how Simon Kinberg’s movie will perform at the box office. The early reviews, though, have been mainly bad.

The last installment to Fox’s X-Men film franchise opens in theaters June 7. What do you think about Turner’s and Chastain’s revelations? Let us know in the comments section below.

Dark Phoenix Director Compares Original Ending To Civil War

Dark Phoenix Director Compares Original Ending To Civil War
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for X-Men: Dark Phoenix!

ADVERTISEMENTSCROLL TO CONTINUE READING
X-Men: Dark Phoenix had its fair share of rewrites, even in the middle of shooting. Director and screenwriter Simon Kinberg recently spoke to Gizmodo about how he had to make changes to the ending of Dark Phoenix. Apparently, it was a little too close to another Marvel film –  Captain America: Civil War.

“My original ending didn’t have the entire X-Family together the way they are in the film now,” said Kinberg. “More than Captain Marvel, you could see a lot of Civil War in that ending. Usually, these big, huge action movies have the climactic moment in the third act. I loved the way that Civil War had its big action set piece where everyone’s facing off more towards the end of the second act rather than in the third, so that after that huge battle, you’re left with Winter Soldier, Captain America, and Iron Man.”

“It’s this telescoped down view of their raw emotions, and I loved how intimate that was,” continued Kinberg. “That’s what I was going for with Dark Phoenix’s ending even though it then might have looked like Captain Marvel for about two minutes.”

Dark Phoenix does have a few elements similar to Civil War. Midway through, Charles Xavier and Magneto are on opposite sides, divided over the fate of Jean Grey. But they eventually unite when the real threat emerges.

Thus far, Dark Phoenix has generated $5 million from Thursday night screenings, indicating it’s on its way to a potential $50 million opening weekend. That’s lower than the most recent X-Men movies, including Days of Future Past’s $90 million and Apocalypse’s $65 million from 2016.

Dark Phoenix is now in theaters. What do you think about the film’s current ending? Let us know in the comment section below.

Endgame Creative Team Talks Alternate Fates for the Avengers

Endgame Creative Team Talks Alternate Fates for the Avengers
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame!

ADVERTISEMENTSCROLL TO CONTINUE READING
Avengers: Endgame lived up to its name and gave a few of its heroes a definitive ending. However, things could have played out differently. While speaking with Empire, the Endgame creative team shared a few alternate fates for the characters.

According to co-screenwriter Christopher Markus, “Marvel as a whole said, ‘We think it might be a time [for Tony to die], but if you have a good reason not to do it, feel free – we’ll do whatever.’ But it really did seem like, particularly with what Tony experiences after the five year break – that he has gotten married, had a kid, and is living a very healthy, peaceful life for once, and he’s had five full years of no surprises – that there wasn’t anywhere left that he needed to go.”

This was a guy who had made his full journey, all the way to the end, had experienced a full rehabilitation of his character from being the ****…at the beginning of the first Iron Man. To have him make the sacrifice that Steve Rogers would have made had he had the opportunity at that moment, just felt really right.”

But with all this focus on Iron Man biting the dust, some fans were wondering…why not Captain America? There’s a simple reason for Cap’s survival, according to co-director Joe Russo.

“Once you kill a beloved character like [Tony], you’ve got to have hope at the end of the movie in some regard, and the only person to give you that hope is the other co-lead,” noted Russo. “Had we killed both the leads, I feel like people would have been walking out into traffic after the film. The intention is not to destroy people, it’s to hopefully tell a complex and dimensionalized story in a way, that makes them feel a varied range of emotion.”

You can read up on all of the additional details here.

What do you think about the idea of Tony making the sacrificial play for the Avengers in Endgame? Let us know in the comments below!

Swamp Thing Reportedly Cancelled By DC Universe
A bolt from the blue has just struck Abby Arcane’s fans, as DC Universe has apparently cancelled Swamp Thing just a week into the first season. According to a report by Bloody Disgusting, “the show lost support from executives before it even aired.” Additionally, the decision shouldn’t be attributable to budget or performance on DC Universe, but to the WarnerMedia/AT&T executives not liking the direction of the show, says a report from GWW. The cast and crew supposedly received the notification of the cancellation of the series late last night.

The series premiered May 31, 2019 on the video-on-demand service operated by DC Entertainment, and it received generally favorable reviews. It seems that Swamp Thing has an unlucky aura surrounding it when it comes to television adaptations. The news of DC Universe cancellation of Swamp Thing reminds us of the animated series which debuted on Fox Kids in April 1991. In that case, it only aired five episodes. On the other hand, in the early ’90s, the USA Network ran a Swamp Thing series for three seasons.

It will now be interesting to see how the choice to cancel the series prior to the filming of the season finale will affect the subscriptions to DC Entertainment’s video-on-demand service. Additionally, this could be just the first of many scapegoats to explain the problems the service has.

The next episode of Swamp Thing airs June 7 on DC Universe. What do you think about Swamp Thing‘s cancellation? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

The Netflix original series was the second of four live-action (now canceled) series, including Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s Luke Cage and Marvel’s Iron Fist, which all led to the teaming of the main characters in Marvel’s The Defenders. Of the four series, Marvel’s Jessica Jones took a suspenseful look into the life of Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, who works as a private investigator while she dealt with internal and external demons. The first season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones was the recipient of a prestigious Peabody Award.

In the second season, Jones is beginning to put her life back together after murdering her tormenter, Kilgrave (David Tennant). Now known throughout the city as a super-powered killer, a new case makes her reluctantly confront who she really is while digging deeper into her past to explore the reasons why.

Krysten Ritter is joined by a returning cast that includes Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Carrie-Anne Moss (Jeri Hogarth), Eka Darville (Malcolm Ducasse) and new cast members Janet McTeer and J.R. Ramirez, among others.

First Dark Phoenix Reviews Suggest a Not-So-Stellar Finish For the X-Men Franchise

First Dark Phoenix Reviews Suggest a Not-So-Stellar Finish For the X-Men Franchise
The final film in the X-Men franchise, Dark Phoenix, is set to open this Friday. Fans are hopeful that it will end on a high note, with the remaining heroes battling Jean Grey’s newfound “dark side.” Alas, the first reviews that have posted on Rotten Tomatoes suggest that they’re not going to get the ending they want.

ADVERTISEMENTSCROLL TO CONTINUE READING
The critical consensus for the concluding chapter to the franchise sits at 15 percent, based on 41 reviews. That’s the lowest ranking in the movie series to date, even lower than the 37 percent for 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. By comparison, X-Men: The Last Stand, which features another take on the Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix legacy, has a 58 percent ranking. In fact, many of Dark Phoenix’s reviews feature a comparison to Last Stand, with critics actually preferring that film.

Here are a few examples of the reviews we’ve seen for Dark Phoenix, noting its many problems:

First up is ComingSoon.net’s review of the film, giving it a 4.5 out of 10. Scott Chitwood, who usually loves the series, noted the following. “I’m a big X-Men fan, but I was disappointed by Dark Phoenix. I suppose it underlines that Hugh Jackman is the true MVP of the X-Men movies. But this misstep by Fox definitely makes me more eager to see how Marvel and Disney take the X-Men ball and run with it in the future.”

Related: Get Ready For Dark Phoenix With an X-Men Celebration Video
Katie Walsh of the Tribune News Service was way harsher with her 1.5 out of 4 review. “Dark Phoenix racks up a rap sheet of offenses (it doesn’t even look remotely like 1992!), but perhaps the worst is proving what X-Men Apocalypse started in its treatment of Oscar Isaac. Despite the caliber and talent of the actor, lackluster writing, directing and editing can warp a performance into something truly dreadful. Now that’s power.”

Don Kaye of Den of Geek noted Sophie Turner’s great acting in the film, but said the rest of the cast was unbalanced.  “At least she’s trying, which can’t be said for some of the other members of the cast. Jennifer Lawrence is all but checking her watch during her scenes as Mystique.” He concluded, though, that “the X-Men franchise, for now, goes out not with a grand finale, but a relentlessly mediocre entry that once again whiffs on one of the canon’s great stories.”

Entertainment Weekly, surprisingly enough, did find some positivity from the film. Leah Greenblatt noted, “You can’t keep a good X-Men down. or a bad one, really; 12 films into a nearly two-decade-old franchise, Dark Phoenix rises from the ashes of 2016’s silly, bloated X-Men Apocalypse — not a free bird, exactly, but better than what came before.”

Fans can judge Dark Phoenix for themselves when the film opens this weekend. Will you be seeing it in theaters, or waiting for it to arrive on home video? Let us know in the comments below!

Emilia Clarke: I 'deeply regret' one thing from the final season of 'Game of Thrones'

Emilia Clarke may have said goodbye to the Mother of Dragons, but she does "deeply regret" one thing from the final season of "Game of Thrones."

Clarke, who played the fiery Daenerys Targaryen on eight seasons of the hit HBO series, said she wishes she'd kept a souvenir from the set for herself.

"I didn’t take anything, and I deeply regret it, and I’m very annoyed," she told Regina Hall during an interview with Variety. "I’m really hoping that the showrunners give me a dragon. I need my smelly socks. I think I did take those."

Clarke, 32, said it's taken her a long time to accept the show has come to an end after the last 10 years, where she has "grown into a woman."

"It’s been almost a year in post (production), and it’s taken me that long to come to terms with it. Where are my dragons? That famous line. Where the hell are they? It felt deeply emotional," Clarke said.

She added that "Daenerys literally saved my life" after she suffered two brain hemorrhages, most recently in 2013.

"It puts you in quite the headspace when you’ve had a brain injury," Clarke said. "Walking in (Daenerys') shoes, I just put so much more into each season because it really was life or death. I felt so powerfully that she was saving me. I could only see her. That was my single point of focus that allowed me to not think about anything scarier than just getting on set."

In April, Clarke told "CBS Sunday Morning" that she learned to draw strength from playing the Mother of Dragons.
